Bosa ‘more likely than not’ done with football

The need is clearly there with second-round pick Jaylahn Tuimoloau, Micheal Clemons and Arden Key competing for the role next to Laiatu Latu at the moment. Boyd also mentions Cameron Jordan, Jadeveon Clowney and Leonard Floyd among others as possibilities. The veteran edge rusher and wideout markets are still unfolding ahead of training camp.

Joey’s brother, Nick Bosa, has played for the 49ers since they drafted him with the second overall pick in 2019. Their mother has been campaigning for the 49ers to sign Joey via social media and, last week, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows said he believes “there’s a good argument” for the 49ers to bring Joey aboard as well. Joey, 30, played for the Bills on a one-year, $12.6 million contract last year, totaling 47 quarterback pressures and five sacks. He suffered a calf injury over the summer, played through a wrist injury and missed two games due to hamstring injuries. Over The Cap lists the 49ers with the ninth-most salary cap space, at just over $31 million. Signing Joey to a one-year deal seems doable if all parties are interested, but the 49ers may have more cap adjustments to make with Trent Williams perhaps getting a new deal.

We’re at the part of free agency where we start skeptically looking at those remaining on the top-100 lists and wondering where they could end up. The 49ers clearly could use more help in the EDGE room, Nick Bosa could team up with his brother, and we’ve had zero reports on interest in (Joey) Bosa so far in free agency. Entering his age-31 season, we expect the veteran to be picky about where he ends up, but the 49ers do make plenty of sense as a destination.

This seems like a formality. Bosa logged one limited session on Friday. The Bills have already locked up a Wild Card spot and do not need to risk Bosa’s playoff availability in a meaningless game. We expect him to sit out this week.

Bosa dealt with a hamstring injury earlier this month. It is unclear whether this one threatens his Week 17 availability. The Bills were also without S Jordan Poyer (hamstring) and DT Jordan Phillips (ankle) on Wednesday. Defensive players who were limited include CB Taron Johnson (quad), S Cam Lewis (hamstring) and LB Shaq Thompson (neck).

Neither are Joey Bosa (hamstring/wrist) or Spencer Brown (shoulder) as the Bills look to be healthy in the trenches against the Patriots in a must-win game if they want any hope at the AFC East title this year. Joshua Palmer (ankle) is questionable after three limited sessions.

Bosa was sidelined last week against the Bengals with a hamstring issue but could return for the Bills’ critical Week 15 matchup against the Patriots. Buffalo’s vulnerable defense will need all the help it can get to slow down MVP frontrunner Drake Maye.

The Bills’ offensive line held up well last weekend, even with Brown and left tackle Dion Dawkins (concussion) out. Dawkins is back for this one, but the Bills will still be down their starting right tackle in a snow game, where they could rely on James Cook and the rushing attack a lot. Joey Bosa continues to be week-to-week, but his loss is a big one for this pass rush, and Shaq Thompson will start again with Terrel Bernard out.

Dawkins was out of the non-contact jersey on Thursday and is now on track to play on Sunday against the Bengals. While Dawkins will be back in action after one game away, head coach Sean McDermott said EDGE Joey Bosa and LB Terrel Bernard would be out in Week 14, while WR Joshua Palmer will be listed as doubtful.

Bosa did not practice Wednesday and seems unlikely to play in Week 14 against the Bengals. His absence could make things a little easier for Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense, as the Bills sports the league’s tenth highest QB pressure rate (24 percent) and the 11th highest QB hurry rate (9 percent). McDermott suggested the team’s medical staff believed Bosa wouldn’t be out for long.
