Richardson gets starting nod to open preseason

Colts announced Anthony Richardson will start Thursday’s preseason game against the Patriots.

Richardson and Riley Leonard will both play, while Daniel Jones will sit. Richardson’s trade request this offseason has gone nowhere, but the Colts appear to be giving him ample opportunity to showcase himself in the preseason as he will get the first half here and the second half next week against Atlanta, while Leonard picks up the other two halves. The Colts are likely hoping someone talks themselves into trading a low pick for Richardson.

Rapoport adds that he “would not be surprised” if Richardson has played his last down as a Colt, and believes he could be traded or waived, seemingly soon. Richardson was recently seen taking third-team reps at practice, and Rapoport wonders whether Richardson can really see pass rushers on either side of him or the receivers running routes downfield. Richardson infamously injured his eye in a pre-game mishap with a resistance band last year, which Rapoport describes as “one of the most absurd and ridiculous injuries of all time.” He really didn’t hold back here. Back in May, The Athletic’s James Boyd used the “questions remain” line regarding Richardson’s eyesight as well, but follow-up reports have been difficult to come by. Richardson’s time as a Colt may be coming to a close, but finding a new team could be harder than expected if there is more to this eyesight story.

Colts coach Shane Steichen did not indicate who will start the game, nor did he rule out QB Daniel Jones (Achilles). Per Erickson, holding Jones out would be unsurprising. Richardson was recently seen working with the third-team offense, so Leonard could have the inside track to start on Thursday.

Richardson, as usual, has been impressive on deep balls, but has had “issues involving his timing and anticipation, securing the snap has been a problem, as he’s bobbled or dropped several shotgun snaps,” Arthur said. Richardson is competing with Riley Leonard for QB2 duties behind Daniel Jones. Leonard, according to Arthur, has seen “slightly” more work with the Colts’ second-team offense than Richardson has in camp. Leonard has been “finding the layups” in Shane Steichen’s offense — an area in which Richardson has struggled as a pro. Leonard would seem to be the favorite to serve as Jones’ backup in 2026.

Arthur said Jones, coming off a December Achilles tear, looks “as if he’d never had major surgery, taking off on full-speed scrambles multiple times. He’s been efficient and accurate, kept the offense in rhythm, and spread the ball around.” This is in line with everything else coming out of Colts camp just eight months after Jones ruptured his Achilles — an injury that often requires a year of recovery. If Jones is able to scramble as much as he did before the injury, he could be one of the best late-round quarterback picks in fantasy this summer. Arthur said Jones has spread the ball around in camp, with Josh Downs and Tyler Warren seeing the bulk of the targets.

Somehow, Daniel Jones returned. Both GM Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen “reported on the quality of his play with a little relief,” though he isn’t quite 100 percent yet. It does sound like he’s trending towards playing Week 1 and should be mobile enough to make the Colts offense work even if he’s not quite as fast as he was before tearing his Achilles. It’s good news for the Colts’ pass-catchers and Jonathan Taylor.
  • IND Quarterback #17
It was reported earlier this month that Jones was “cleared to do everything,” but now we have it straight from the source. After suffering a torn Achilles in Week 14 of last season, Jones has rehabbed and worked his way back to playing shape in time to open camp with the Colts at full strength. Jones had a nice season with the Colts before going down last year, throwing for 3,101-19-8 in 13 games while adding another 45-164-5 on the ground. He was rewarded with a two-year, $88 million contract this offseason and will look to lead the Colts to the playoffs after last year’s team fell short despite starting the season with an 8-2 record. Jones profiles as a fringe QB1/QB2 in fantasy after finishing as a QB1 in six of the 13 games he appeared in last season.

“I’m doing everything. Cleared to do everything,” Jones told Boyd Friday at his youth football camp. “I think it’s just about, at this point, sharpening that.” Jones said that he still thinks about the Achilles during practice reps, adding that he “probably will until you get playing.” Jones continues to appear to be on track for Week 1, although his progress through camp and preseason will be telling. Whether Jones, who signed a two-year, $88 million contract extension with $50 million in guaranteed money prior to the 2025 season, returns to his form shown during the first half of the 2026 season remains to be seen. Considering the injury and lengthy rehab process, fantasy managers could be waiting into the second quarter of the coming season for that chance.

Broadly speaking: This is good news, but there’s many steps of the rehab process still to come. Colts GM Chris Ballard said in April that Jones is “shooting for Week 1.” That implied a little bit of a question mark. If Jones does start Week 1, he will be hard to trust in fantasy leagues, as the Achilles is likely to hinder him for quite a bit as a runner. That question doesn’t have to be answered for quite a few months, though, and it seems like Jones has been ahead of expectations of his recovery for some time.
  • IND Quarterback #17
According to the Indy Star’s Joel A. Erickson, Jones did everything in individual drills. That’s a good sign for Jones, who is a little under seven months removed from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in Week 14. He still has two months until training camp, putting him well on track to be ready by Week 1. The next step will be participating in team drills. For now, Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson will get some extra reps in practice, though it doesn’t look like either player will be needed in Jones’ place to start the year.
  • IND Quarterback #5
GM Chris Ballard has emphasized lately he “still thinks Richardson has something to offer.” We can certainly see the logic behind the Colts not doing another team a favor by letting Richardson become a free agent, but if there’s no market here, it seems likely that Richardson will likely just be the team’s third quarterback this season behind Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard. Richardson has been evenly splitting second-team reps with Leonard during the Colts’ offseason program.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Rams WR Puka Nacua is dealing with “minor soreness in his groin.”

Nacua left practice with a trainer early on Tuesday. Head coach Sean McVay initially was unsure on what Nacua was dealing with, but Rapoport now reports the 25-year-old is managing groin soreness. The Rams are being cautious with a minor injury but no reason for fantasy managers to fret; Nacua may miss some preseason time but there is no indication he is in danger of missing any regular season games.

Seahawks placed FB Robbie Ouzts (neck) on injured reserve.

Ouzts is a former Alabama tight end the Seahawks converted to fullback last season. He dealt with a neck injury heading into the Super Bowl and will now head to injured reserve due to another neck issue. The Seahawks will lose some blocking upfront in the run game but have Brady Russell at the position to fill Ouzts’ void.

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec reports Ravens CB Nate Wiggins “avoided a major injury.”

Wiggins was carted off in practice with a lower body injury. Initial MRI tests indicated the 22-year-old avoided a major injury and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport adds that there appears to be no significant structural damage. This is great news for the Ravens defense as Wiggins was poised to be the CB1 to begin the season. Though he will still miss some time, Wiggins will return “sooner rather than later.”

Browns WR Denzel Boston is listed as a starter on Cleveland’s preseason unofficial depth chart.

Boston, who ESPN’s Benjamin Solak compared to Sam LaPorta after viewing Browns training camp, looks to have a locked in role with the Browns early. We wouldn’t necessarily say that Boston is a lock to be fantasy-useful, but Todd Monken has been well-regarded as an offensive mind and Jerry Jeudy didn’t exactly light it up last year. It’s certainly in the range of outcomes that Boston puts up a WR3/WR4 type of year as a rookie.

Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are listed as co-starters on Cleveland’s initial unofficial depth chart.

They’ve been rotating days for the most part this summer, so this isn’t a surprise. The Browns haven’t named a starter yet, but even when they do, it will be hard to find fantasy value at quarterback.

Free agent CB Terrion Arnold will visit the Giants on Wednesday.

He’s visited the Saints, Seahawks, and Texans over the past few weeks. It seems likely that Arnold will eventually sign, though perhaps he’ll be in limbo while teams wait for his felony kidnapping and armed robbery charges play out in the courtroom.

Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort said the Cardinals have no interest in trading Josh Sweat.

Sweat has been on the PUP list for the entirety of training camp and has not worked out with the team in any way, shape, or form this offseason. Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said: “Yeah. I mean, there’s different parts of injuries and stuff like that that, you know, are...and I shouldn’t even call it injuries...but just getting himself right to be ready to roll. So, again, I like where he’s at. I know everyone probably is not believing me on that one, but again, I only try to speak truth to you guys.” Uh huh. Well anyway, we have no idea if Josh Sweat will play again any time soon. It certainly would appear from the outside that Sweat is pushing his leverage towards a trade despite the Cardinals’ denials.

Mercury News’ Cam Inman reports Nick Bosa (knee) is dealing with tendinitis and is “week-to-week.”

Chargers T Rashawn Slater said he had a “little flare up” with his knee last week.

Slater has not practiced since Thursday, but said it is “nothing to be concerned about.” OK, if you say so. After watching how the Christian Darrisaw situation unfolded last year in Minnesota, we think you’re well within your rights to be a little concerned about this even if we’re not in the realm of outright panic just yet.

Puka Nacua left practice early with the trainer on Tuesday and Rams coach Sean McVay said he “isn’t sure what the deal is just yet.”

Same. We’ll monitor this, but there’s not any actionable advice to hand out until we get a more detailed report. A non-minor Nacua injury, of course, would be stratospheric news in the fantasy community.
