Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue (shoulder) resumed participating in team drills on Thursday.

The good news is that Blue took “some” snaps in team drills for the first time this week, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. The bad news is that Blue was the fourth player up behind starting RB Javonte Williams and fellow backups RB Malik Davis and RB Israel Abanikanda. Earlier today, COO and co-owner Stephen Jones said Blue and RB Phil Mafah were being “pushed” by Davis. While it’s possible the team is just easing Blue back into action, his spot in the rotation, coupled with Jones’ comments, is concerning. He had received positive reviews to this point, but a fantasy-related reassessment may be in order. The backfield rotation in Saturday’s preseason game against the Cardinals is worth tracking.

The Dan Le Batard Show crew discusses the Matthew Stafford-Jared Goff trade 5 years later, highlighting that Goff has been a piece of the first fun Lions teams in a long time despite being the less talented player.

Javonte Williams should see all the volume he can handle with the Cowboys entering Week 1 with a recent signee and a practice squad elevation as depth behind their lead back. There weren’t any other surprises outside of the lack of backfield depth.

It is unclear whether this is a season-ending injury or if Davis has a chance to return later in the year. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier that the Cowboys were “bracing for an extended absence” and that a source told him, “it’s bad.” It sounds like Davis’ 2026 season may be over. Cowboys RB Emari Demercado now sits behind starting RB Javonte Williams, and RB Israel Abanikanda is on the practice squad.

Regarding Davis’ injury, Fowler’s source said simply, “it’s bad.” The Cowboys’ No. 2 running back is undergoing further testing, but we expect them to place him on injured reserve before long. The Cowboys waived RB Jaydon Blue and RB Phil Mafah last month. Blue has since signed with the Eagles’ practice squad. The Cowboys have RB Emari Demercado on the active roster behind RB Javonte Williams. Currently, only RB Israel Abanikanda is on the practice squad in Dallas.

Hill was quickly ruled out for Week 1. Dallas cut Phil Mafah and Jaydon Blue at the end of camp, briefly leaving Davis as the only backup running back on their roster. They eventually signed Emari Demercado after he was released by Kansas City. If the injury is serious, the Cowboys could bring either Mafah or Blue back, given their familiarity with the system. The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins reported shortly afterward that Davis has suffered a hip injury, though no further details were given.
  • PHI Running Back #23
Blue was waived by the Cowboys and went unclaimed, and the 2025 fifth-round pick will remain in the NFC East. He’ll begin the campaign behind Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley as backups to Saquon Barkley, but some strong performances in practice could give the 22-year-old a chance to receive touches in 2026.
  • FA Running Back #23
Blue now becomes a free agent and can be signed by any running back-needy team, including the ability to sign onto the Dallas practice squad. It has been quite the fall from grace for Blue over the previous 24 hours, seemingly going from the favorite for backup duties for the Cowboys to without a home. It is also noteworthy that only one running back was claimed during the waiver period, veteran Emari Demercado, by this same Cowboys team. Blue appears to have lost all fantasy value and faces an uphill battle for a meaningful role in his sophomore campaign.

Well this one is going to leave a mark. 2025 fifth-rounder Blue was a summer ’25 fantasy creation the Cowboys never seemed to get behind, confirming as much when they made him a Week 1 healthy scratch. That set the tone for a bitterly disappointing rookie year that featured just 39 touches. This offseason seemed to be different, however, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer spending the spring dishing out over-the-top positive quotes on his second-year back. The praise again died down during training camp, but Blue showed well in his preseason action. Just apparently nowhere close to well enough to beat out survivor veteran Malik Davis for No. 2 status behind Javonte Williams. Blue is still only 22 years old, but his back-to-back failures to earn pass-catching duties in a backfield that could really use such a player is an ominous sign for his NFL future. He’s now a tenuous hold in dynasty leagues despite his youth and past high expectations. All of that being said, it is possible once the cut-down dust settles that either Blue or fellow waived sophomore Phil Mafah end up back on the Cowboys’ 53-man roster.

Mafah became the odd man out of the backfield rotation behind starter Javonte Williams Sunday, and Jaydon Blue also being waived leaves Malik Davis as the primary backup in Dallas at the start of the season.
  • DAL Running Back #20
Davis appears to have secured a roster spot, but we won’t know for sure until Sunday. The broadcast initially referred to him as the starter, but it was instead RB Phil Mafah who took the field. Mafah dominated backfield touches throughout the first half, repeatedly running into Saints defenders on runs up the middle. He was spelled by RB Israel Abanikanda. Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue does not seem to be playing this evening. Last Sunday, The Athletic’s Jon Machota predicted Blue would seize the No. 2 running back job from Davis in-season.

Darren Waller caught all three of his targets for 33 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers’ Week 2 win over the Falcons.

Waller saw as many targets as Tommy Tremble and Mitchell Evans combined. Unlike the other Carolina tight ends, Waller is still an explosive pass-catcher and a de facto wide receiver. When Bryce Young looked his way, it was for a big play. He made good on the minor role with his first two touchdowns as a Panther. Waller only has five targets through two weeks. He will make the occasional big play, but it’s hard to get him in fantasy lineups with such a limited role.

Kayshon Boutte caught 3-of-5 targets for 37 yards in Houston’s Week 2 loss to the Bengals.

Expected to be “used a lot” by Ian Rapoport’s reporting, Boutte was on the field for 53-of-76 snaps. He either didn’t look completely comfortable with the offense yet or wasn’t fully integrated, depending on how nice you want to be about it — C.J. Stroud’s one near pick was in his area on a ball he wasn’t near and it was clear he and Dalton Schultz weren’t on the same page. Boutte’s role should continue to grow next week assuming Nico Collins remains out but the Texans haven’t really embraced his talents yet.

Christian Watson caught 4-of-11 targets for 41 yards and a touchdown in the Packers’ Week 2 win over the Jets.

It was not a pretty game for Watson or the Packers’ offense, which struggled to move the ball against the Jets in a light drizzle all game. While Watson and Jordan Love were inefficient in their connection, they did link up for some big catches, including a short fourth-quarter touchdown, and Watson led the team in targets while running one fewer route than Matthew Golden. There is some concern that losing Jayden Reed (neck) to an injury may put even more attention on Watson, but this feels like just an off day for the offense. If this is an off day, then the ceiling remains really high for Watson this season, especially next week against the Falcons.

DeMario Douglas caught 1-of-2 targets for nine yards in the Patriots’ Week 2 win over the Steelers.

Douglas made the first catch of the game for the Patriots, but was silent the rest of the day. The 25-year-old is a low-yardage slot receiver who tends to get schemed targets when he is on the field. Douglas tallied the third-most snaps of all Patriots wide receivers on the day but will find it hard to achieve fantasy relevancy in an offense that utilizes multiple receivers in several different ways. Second-year receiver Kyle Williams also saw a pair of targets, catching one for 10 yards. Neither Williams or Douglas are anything more than deep league dart throws for Week 3 against the Jaguars.

Kaleb Johnson rushed eight times for 32 yards in the Packers’ Week 2 win over the Jets.

Johnson actually led the Packers in rushing attempts and rushing yards in this one. He played on just 13 of the team’s 53 snaps, so we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves here, but he was also clearly the team’s best running back on the day, and he took the first carries in overtime after Marshawn Lloyd fumbled in the second half. There’s a real chance that Johnson steps into a bigger role in Week 3 against Atlanta. He deserves to be added in deeper formats just in case that comes to fruition.

Chuba Hubbard rushed 12 times for 53 yards in the Panthers’ Week 2 win over the Falcons, adding two catches for 11 yards and a touchdown.

Hubbard operated as the Panthers’ unquestioned RB1, out-carrying Jonathon Brooks 12-5. He got on the board early with a touchdown catch near the goal line. It was his second touchdown grab of the year and his third time finding the end zone in total. Brook also left the game early with a groin injury and his status for Week 3 is up in the air. Hubbard was already going to project for RB2 numbers with Brooks in the middle. He will push to the middle of the RB2 pack if Brooks is out versus the Browns.

Dalton Schultz caught 12-of-14 targets for 140 yards in Houston’s Week 2 loss to the Bengals.

An incredible PPR scam as the Texans had him as the main checkdown receiver while trailing for much of the game. Eight of the 12 catches came in the fourth quarter as C.J. Stroud tried in vain to push the rest of this offense anywhere. Don’t expect this much next week with Collins apparently questionable again, but Schultz clearly elevates in the pecking order and has TE1 appeal.
