DLLS Sports’ Clarence Hill Jr. reports Malik Davis was carted off the field on Friday with an injury.

Hill was quickly ruled out for Week 1. Dallas cut Phil Mafah and Jaydon Blue at the end of camp, briefly leaving Davis as the only backup running back on their roster. They eventually signed Emari Demercado after he was released by Kansas City. If the injury is serious, the Cowboys could bring either Mafah or Blue back, given their familiarity with the system. The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins reported shortly afterward that Davis has suffered a hip injury, though no further details were given.

It is unclear whether this is a season-ending injury or if Davis has a chance to return later in the year. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier that the Cowboys were “bracing for an extended absence” and that a source told him, “it’s bad.” It sounds like Davis’ 2026 season may be over. Cowboys RB Emari Demercado now sits behind starting RB Javonte Williams, and RB Israel Abanikanda is on the practice squad.

Regarding Davis’ injury, Fowler’s source said simply, “it’s bad.” The Cowboys’ No. 2 running back is undergoing further testing, but we expect them to place him on injured reserve before long. The Cowboys waived RB Jaydon Blue and RB Phil Mafah last month. Blue has since signed with the Eagles’ practice squad. The Cowboys have RB Emari Demercado on the active roster behind RB Javonte Williams. Currently, only RB Israel Abanikanda is on the practice squad in Dallas.
  • DAL Running Back #25
Demercado enters a wide open backfield depth chart behind starter Javonte Williams and primary backup Malik Davis, the two of whom were the only running backs to survive 53-man roster cuts Sunday. It does not appear the Cowboys are finished adding to their backfield, with most teams keeping four running backs on the active roster throughout the season. More to come.
  • KC Running Back #25
Demercado’s departure leaves rookie RB Emmett Johnson and second-year RB Brashard Smith to back up starting RB Kenneth Walker. The Chiefs also waived DE Vincent Anthony, LB Kam Arnold, WR Andrew Armstrong, WR Wesley Bissainthe, DT Cole Brevard, WR Jason Brownlee, WR Jacob De Jesus, OT Ethan Driskell, WR Omari Evans, OT Chukwuebuka Godrick, LB Cam Jones, WR Xavier Loyd, S Tanner McCalister, DT Amari McNeill, C Pete Nygra, RB Jaydn Ott, DT Damon Payne, CB D’Arco Perkins-McAllister, TE Mason Pline, S DeShon Singleton, CB Melvin Smith, EDGE Tyreke Smith, OG Josh Thompson, CB Zelmar Vedder, TE Tre Watson and WR Jeff Weimer. The Chiefs released LB Cole Christiansen, CB Kaiir Elam, CB Kader Kohou and EDGE Emmanuel Ogbah. The Chiefs placed DT Omarr Norman-Lott (knee) on the reserve/physically unable to play list and WR Jimmy Holiday on injured reserve. The Chiefs also waived OG C.J. Hanson, QB Chris Oladokun and RB EJ Smith with injury designations.

Well this one is going to leave a mark. 2025 fifth-rounder Blue was a summer ’25 fantasy creation the Cowboys never seemed to get behind, confirming as much when they made him a Week 1 healthy scratch. That set the tone for a bitterly disappointing rookie year that featured just 39 touches. This offseason seemed to be different, however, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer spending the spring dishing out over-the-top positive quotes on his second-year back. The praise again died down during training camp, but Blue showed well in his preseason action. Just apparently nowhere close to well enough to beat out survivor veteran Malik Davis for No. 2 status behind Javonte Williams. Blue is still only 22 years old, but his back-to-back failures to earn pass-catching duties in a backfield that could really use such a player is an ominous sign for his NFL future. He’s now a tenuous hold in dynasty leagues despite his youth and past high expectations. All of that being said, it is possible once the cut-down dust settles that either Blue or fellow waived sophomore Phil Mafah end up back on the Cowboys’ 53-man roster.
  • FA Running Back #37
Mafah became the odd man out of the backfield rotation behind starter Javonte Williams Sunday, and Jaydon Blue also being waived leaves Malik Davis as the primary backup in Dallas at the start of the season.

Johnson added two catches for 15 yards and had another chunk gain through the air called back because of a penalty. Kenneth Walker didn’t play in this contest, allowing Johnson to draw the start with some of KC’s first-team offense on the field. Johnson split reps with Emari Demercado over the team’s first three drives, then left the game for good. He looks like the team’s No. 2 back, though all three backs have been the next man up behind Walker at some point during the preseason. Johnson isn’t guaranteed the backup job, but he’s now the favorite, putting him in the mix as a late-round flyer in deeper fantasy leagues.

Davis appears to have secured a roster spot, but we won’t know for sure until Sunday. The broadcast initially referred to him as the starter, but it was instead RB Phil Mafah who took the field. Mafah dominated backfield touches throughout the first half, repeatedly running into Saints defenders on runs up the middle. He was spelled by RB Israel Abanikanda. Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue does not seem to be playing this evening. Last Sunday, The Athletic’s Jon Machota predicted Blue would seize the No. 2 running back job from Davis in-season.
  • DAL Running Back #20
Davis got the start in Saturday’s preseason game against the Cardinals, rushing five times for 29 yards while adding one catch for eight yards and a touchdown. The 27-year-old back has gained steam in recent weeks as the favorite to win the Cowboys’ RB2 job out of camp, but Machota also said he believes “Jaydon Blue takes (the RB2 job) during the season.” Blue rushed 15 times for a team-high 75 yards in Saturday’s win over the Cardinals, ripping off multiple chunk gains on the day. While we still have one preseason game left to go, Ultimately if Javonte Williams goes down this will likely be a committee, but Davis could have some stash value in deeper leagues.
  • DAL Running Back #23
The good news is that Blue took “some” snaps in team drills for the first time this week, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. The bad news is that Blue was the fourth player up behind starting RB Javonte Williams and fellow backups RB Malik Davis and RB Israel Abanikanda. Earlier today, COO and co-owner Stephen Jones said Blue and RB Phil Mafah were being “pushed” by Davis. While it’s possible the team is just easing Blue back into action, his spot in the rotation, coupled with Jones’ comments, is concerning. He had received positive reviews to this point, but a fantasy-related reassessment may be in order. The backfield rotation in Saturday’s preseason game against the Cardinals is worth tracking.

Kyler Murray left the Vikings’ Week 1 game against the Packers with an apparent head injury.

Murray scrambled to his right and slid late. Packers defender Javon Bullard dove into his head as he went to the ground, knocking Murray’s helmet off entirely. Bullard was flagged for unnecessary roughness. Murray left the game for further evaluation. Carson Wentz is now under center.

Parker Washington caught 5-of-6 targets for 83 yards and a touchdown in the Jaguars’ Week 1 win over the Browns.

Washington saw elite usage in the first half, making the first Jacksonville catch of the game and ending the Jaguars’ first drive with a diving 30-yard touchdown reception. He followed it up with a one-handed sideline catch on the second drive and tallied five receptions in the first half. His usage was that of a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver for the Jaguars’ fantasy-friendly offense. The game was out of hand in the second half, leading to no more receptions the rest of the day, but fantasy managers will be happy with Washington’s utilization and production as he adds to his elite box scores from the end of last season. Washington is a fantasy WR2 heading into Week 2 against the Broncos.

Zachariah Branch had no targets in a Week 1 loss to the Steelers.

On one hand, no targets is bad. On the other hand, Branch played one more snap than Olamide Zaccheaus and ran only three fewer routes. This is not a passing attack that you want pieces of right now, but there is a chance that Branch could take the WR3 role by the middle of the season.

Kyle Monangai had ten rushes for 100 yards and a touchdown in the Bears’ Week 1 win against the Panthers, adding two catches for 24 yards.

Monangai didn’t see much involvement when the game was in doubt. Once the Bears took a commanding lead, he split the backfield workload with D’Andre Swift and piled up most of his production on one carry: A 61-yarder right up the middle against an abominable Carolina front seven. Monangai led the backfield in routes and targets. Much of that involvement came after the Bears took a big lead, however. He’ll be an iffy flex play in Week 2 against the Vikings.

Alec Pierce caught 4-of-6 targets for 61 yards in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Ravens.

Pierce hauled in a 13-yard pass on the Colts’ opening drive but didn’t log his second reception of the game until the third quarter. The speedster, who has made a name for himself as a deep threat, saw just one pass of 20-plus air yards in Sunday’s loss, with all of his receptions coming in the intermediate part of the field. With the game nearly out of reach in the fourth quarter, Pierce caught passes of 14 and 23 yards to get the Colts into scoring range before Tyler Warren capped the drive with a nine-yard receiving touchdown. Pierce’s six targets tied Keenan Allen for the team lead on Sunday, but we’ll need to see more volume before we can confidently project him as anything more than a WR3 for next week’s game against the Chiefs.

Josh Palmer caught a 34-yard touchdown on one of his two targets against the Texans in Week 1.

It was a go-ahead score, one that Josh Allen rocketed on to Palmer’s chest. Palmer played just 18 of 57 snaps per PFF’s early data and looks to be behind Keon Coleman (29 snaps), though this at least will help keep him on the radar in the passing game. Palmer is more of a deep-league stash than anyone we want to start right now, but it’s not completely impossible for him to return value in this offense.

Jalen Coker caught 8-of-9 targets for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers’ Week 1 loss to the Bears.

It was Coker, not Tetairoa McMillan, who operated as Bryce Young’s No. 1 wideout in this one. Coker was targeted on 21 percent of his routes in out-of-control negative game script while McMillan saw a target on 19 percent of his routes. Coker came down with a 51-yarder in the first half and scored one of his two touchdowns in garbage time. The Carolina offense is not one that will usually produce 40-plus drop backs for Young and all the related pass attempts and air yards. That means it’ll be tough for both McMillan and Coker to put up solid numbers in the same game. But even if McMillan reclaims his WR1 spot next week against the Falcons, Coker should have flex appeal in 12-team formats.

Khalil Shakir caught 4-of-6 targets for 50 yards in Buffalo’s Week 1 win over the Texans.

The good news is he was healthy enough to play after he was seemingly sidelined towards the end of training camp with something the Bills never disclosed. He played 30-of-57 snaps. The bad news is that if Dalton Kincaid is going to be this involved, it’s not likely that Shakir will be targeted enough to crack the WR3 ranks. A lot can change — and Kincaid isn’t known for his durability — but it was a “meh” debut for Shakir as he fell behind Kincaid and DJ Moore in the passing pecking order.

Olamide Zaccheaus caught his only target for five yards in a Week 1 loss to the Steelers.

Zaccheaus was on the field for 18 of the team’s 61 snaps and ran a route on 11 of their 29 dropbacks. Rookie Zachariah Branch ran a route on eight dropbacks. Neither player appears to be a major factor on an offense that really wants to run the ball, especially with Cooper Rush at quarterback.
