Rashee Rice bounces into EZ amidst modest volume

Rashee Rice caught both targets for 19 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ Week 1 win over the Broncos.

Rice saw only two targets as the Chiefs clearly had a ground-heavy game plan to ease quarterback Patrick Mahomes back into action in his first game since tearing his ACL in 2025. Furthermore, Rice was largely unable to generate separation against a stingy Denver secondary, oftentimes locked down in man coverage. Even his touchdown was uninspiring aside from a great effort to bounce off the first tackler. Rice appears to be a shaky fantasy bet for managers that invested an early-round pick into his services, particularly in the coming weeks against poor competition. Rice will be a speculative WR3 against the Colts in Week 2.
Defense costs Cowboys again vs. UDFA QB Daniels
Dan Patrick recaps the TNF action that saw the Buccaneers beat the Cowboys in Arlington, where the offense sputtered and shoddy defense cost the home team once again while facing UDFA rookie QB Jalon Daniels.

After the game, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Rice “tweaked” his hamstring, seemingly downplaying the severity of his injury. It’s possible Silver is speculating on how long Rice could be out given what we know about soft-tissue injuries. Rice didn’t return to the game on Sunday against the Raiders, but he could be seen working out on the sideline at various times and was also on the exercise bike. With the Chiefs now entering their bye week, it’s possible we won’t have more clarity on Rice’s potential absence until they return to prepare for Week 6 against the Chargers. We will check back in with any updates as the team provides them.

The Chiefs aren’t formally ruling him out just yet, but Rice’s day is as good as done with this latest update. He continues to go through tests on the hamstring he injured in the first quarter of Sunday’s game and will likely be ruled out in the near future. If his day is done, Rice will finish with zero receptions on zero targets in just six offensive snaps.
  • KC Wide Receiver #4
This news comes from the team’s X account. Rice exited in the first quarter of Sunday’s game and eventually made his way to the locker room after initially refusing to leave the field. CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported that Rice was noticeably frustrated on the sideline, which isn’t an encouraging sign as far as his return for this game is concerned.
  • KC Wide Receiver #4
It’s hard to tell what may have happened here, but Rice appeared to land awkwardly on his left foot after making a catch on a play that would be overturned by a penalty. Rice appeared to be grabbing at the back of his leg and immediately made his way to the sideline. We will provide an update when we receive one.
  • KC Wide Receiver #4
Rice’s seven receptions were easily a new season best, though he’s now cleared 80 yards in back-to-back contests. Rice’s nine targets were no joke on a day where Patrick Mahomes was limited to 24 attempts as the Chiefs ran just 49 plays. Rice was also the intended target on Mahomes’ “interception,” which in reality was a ball Rice batted into the air. Not good, but neither was the pass. It was behind the wideout, who was laying on the ground. We doubt Mahomes holds it against him. Rice will remain a solid WR2 for Week 4 in Vegas.

An interesting development from this one were the 10 targets filtered to running back Kenneth Walker, who gained emphasis through the air in the short areas of the field typically accounted for by Rice and tight end Travis Kelce. The Colts also utilized elevated rates of man coverage until the departure of cornerback Charvarius Ward, against which Rice has clear negative splits. He did break free for a 31-yard gain, one of two Mahomes completions to go for more than 30 yards. Rice remains a volume-driven WR2 with clear WR3 downside, in an offense now more intent on featuring the backfield. He remains a touchdown-dependent WR2 against the Dolphins in Week 3.
  • KC Wide Receiver #4
Rice earned only two targets in Week 1, yet still technically warrants WR2 treatment based on his theoretical role in the offense, along with his past WR1 performances. The Chiefs notably faced the Broncos’ top-tier defense last week and will get a far softer matchup against the Colts in Week 2.

Rashee Rice (knee) is also practicing in full. Both players underwent offseason knee procedures and had slow ramp-ups during the summer. Both players were active for Week 1 and found the end zone. Mahomes did so on the ground, putting the notion that he would be hampered by the knee issue to rest. The passing attack still looked shaky in Week 1, but there are no health concerns for either player. Mahomes will be a low-end QB1 versus the Colts, and Rice will hold a spot in the WR2 ranks.
  • KC Wide Receiver #4
Rice is evidently good to go for Week 1 after a tumultuous offseason, which included a knee operation and a jail stint. The Chiefs’ No. 1 wide receiver looked sluggish in training camp while rookie WR Cyrus Allen shined, but Rice’s status as the entrenched top target earner counts for something. Rice should be viewed as a WR2 entering the season.
  • KC Wide Receiver #4
Andy Reid also echoed this sentiment earlier in the offseason. As Rapoport points out, Rice was already suspended for his involvement in a hit-and-run car crash in 2024. He violated his probation this year and spent 30 days in jail, but it doesn’t sound like the league plans to punish him any further. Rice is also recovering from offseason knee surgery and has received mixed reviews over the first two weeks of training camp. For fantasy purposes, as long as Rice can soak up check-downs, the PPR points will flow.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Justin Jefferson (ankle) plans to play in Week 5 against the Saints, but the team “has to see how he feels on Saturday.”

This is great news. We will not have to wait for the dreaded game-time decision call with Jefferson this time around. If active, Jefferson should be started as a WR1 against the Saints. He remained limited in practice all week. We will provide an update on the matter as soon as possible.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Terry McLaurin (hamstring) will “most likely” be a game-time decision for Week 5 against the Giants.

Keep it locked to Rotoworld, folks. Hopefully, we get word on McLaurin’s status on Saturday, but it appears as though we may have to wait until Sunday morning. Fowler adds that rookie WR Antonio Williams “could be a factor in the passing game regardless of whether McLaurin plays.”

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said Seattle’s Week 6 Thursday Night Football game against the Broncos makes Zach Charbonnet’s (knee) ramp-up “tricky.”

Charbonnet is on schedule in his rehab program and “will be ready to ramp up his work next week.” Unfortunately, the Seahawks will have scaled-down practices as they prepare for their Thursday Night Football game. It sounds like Charbonnet is close to returning, but team doctors might want to see how his knee responds to a full week or practicing before clearing him. A condensed practice week indeed makes that tricky. Stay tuned.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Ravens “do not know” whether Lamar Jackson (ankle) will play in Week 6 against the Browns.

Earlier this week, Rapoport said Jackson had an “outside chance” of suiting up in Week 5 against the Falcons, but it sounds like the situation is a little more fluid than expected. With Tyler Huntley under center, the Ravens’ pass-catching corps takes a small hit, though Zay Flowers remains a must-start.

Colby Parkinson (knee/shoulder) practiced in full on Friday.

Parkinson is unlikely to be startable as a TE1 if he plays on Monday night, but his return will likely reduce Tyler Higbee’s snap share. Higbee has been TE1-viable in each of the last two weeks.

Aaron Donald (back) practiced in full on Friday.

This is a good sign for Donald. Meanwhile, CB Jaylen Watson (shoulder) remained limited and star S Quentin Lake (hip) remained sidelined. Watson starts in the No. 2 perimeter cornerback role, while Lake serves as the primary nickel cornerback and part-time safety. Missing either player would be notable.

Joshua Palmer (shoulder) was added to the injury report on Friday.

Palmer seemingly injured his shoulder in practice today. The Bills may already be without WR DJ Moore (shoulder) on Monday night. While Palmer is not relevant in 12-team leagues, his potential absence would improve Keon Coleman’s stock.

DJ Moore (shoulder) did not practice on Friday.

The Bills’ No. 1 wide receiver is on the wrong side of questionable for his team’s Monday Night Football game against the Rams. Moore sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder in Week 2. He aggravated it in Week 4 with a hard fall and was unable to continue playing. If active, Moore will be a risk-reward WR2.

49ers RB Kaelon Black (illness) is not on the final injury report for Week 5 against the Seahawks.

Black was limited on Wednesday, but upgraded to full participation on Thursday and Friday. There are no concerns about his ability to handle backup duties against the Seahawks this week. That said, he has just 10 carries over the last two weeks and cannot be started in 12-team FLEX spots.

Isaiah Likely (knee/groin) is not on the final injury report and will play in Week 5 against the Commanders.

The Giants’ passing offense is tethered to Jameis Winston’s scattershot arm, but Likely has a favorable matchup against the Commanders’ defense this week. He can be started as a low-end TE1 in this divisional showdown.
