Jets placed WR Arian Smith (knee) on injured reserve.

He’ll miss at least four weeks. Smith had only really been playing special teams. It leaves the Jets with only three wideouts on their 53-man roster following Omar Cooper’s IR placement in Week 1. Tyler Johnson and Sterling Shepard are in line to be elevated off the practice squad for depth in Week 3.
Series of defensive miscues cost Cowboys in Rio
Mike Florio, Jason Garrett and Devin McCourty discuss the wild ending to Ravens-Cowboys in Rio, explaining why it's a good sign for Baltimore but ultimately stems from a series of bad defensive calls by Dallas.

Smith has been crowded out of the Jets current receiver situation by John Metchie III and Adonai Mitchell. Smith can be dropped in deeper re-draft leagues if you were holding on to hope. Also inactive for the Jets are CB Jarvis Brownlee (hip), DL Mazi Smith, TE Jelani Woods, DL Tyler Baron, RB Khalil Herbert and EDGE Braiden McGregor.

He did not practice on Friday with the hip injury, which is a concerningly quick downgrade. We’re not entirely sure who else to recommend in New York’s pass-catcher room if Reynolds is down — Arian Smith played 91.8 percent of the snaps last week but turned them into just a three-target sacrificial X showing. Tyler Johnson led the team in receiving yardage and might be the play, but only played 25 percent of the snaps in Week 7.

Reynolds was set to operate as the team’s WR1 over the next couple weeks with Garrett Wilson (knee) sidelined. The hip injury might throw a wrench in those plans. If he’s unable to practice later in the week, the Jets could enter Week 7 with Arian Smith as their top wideout.

“It’s a tall order to bank on a fourth-round rookie,” Rosenblatt writes, then notes that unless the Jets make a trade or acquire some outside help, they probably don’t have much upside at the position beyond Smith. Smith has enough speed to hit a huge play here or there, but we’d be surprised given the run-heavy direction of the offense if the Jets found a significant fantasy contributor at receiver outside of Garrett Wilson. Still, we can’t completely dismiss Smith’s chances if he creates a big role for himself early.

Rosenblatt noted Reynolds’ instant connection with Justin Fields in early offseason practices. He also made it clear that Allen Lazard isn’t much of a threat to take the job from Reynolds. Second-year wideout Malachi Corley is already on the roster bubble after a disastrous rookie season and a regime change while fourth-round rookie Arian Smith will likely play a part-time role as an outside speedster this year. Reynolds finishing second on the team in routes looks inevitable. He’s not on the redraft radar, but Best Ball sickos may want to take note for their Fields stacks.

The good news for Smith is that he has a lot of depth chart runway. Garrett Wilson is the obvious No. 1, but neither Josh Reynolds nor Allen Lazard qualifies as a locked-in WR2 at this stage of their careers. Smith’s blazing speed has intrigued Aaron Glenn, who noted how fast he was in rookie minicamp over the weekend by simply noting “Arian has some juice.” The tough news is that as long as Justin Fields is the starter, it’s hard to believe he’ll be seeing many deep shots that aren’t schemed wide open. Still, Smith has some appeal in deeper leagues and could make an interesting dynasty stash.

Smith will likely be a gadget wideout or a kick returner for the Jets, with little chance to become a staple in three-receiver sets. A limited production profile that spans five college seasons will immediately work against Smith’s (6’0/179) long-term outlook. The former four-star prospect finally broke out for 48-817-4 in 2024, but caught just 20 passes for 539 yards and six touchdowns during his first four seasons with the Bulldogs. A lanky receiver who possesses 4.36 speed, Smith, a former college sprinter, is best utilized as a field stretcher at the next level. He saw 35.7 percent of his career targets come on throws of 20-plus yards, per PFF. His career 19.9 YPR speaks to his ability to break off the occasional big play, but his 19 percent targets per route run also highlights his boom-or-bust potential. For a player with elite speed like Smith, it’s not a good sign that he was never given the opportunity to serve as a return man, although he has plenty of experience on punt/kick coverage. Far from a sure-handed receiver (16 percent drop rate), we’ve seen players like Smith earn NFL roles – see Marquez Valdes-Scantling. That said, their roles tend to be limited and often prove to be replaceable over time. Smith’s speed and athleticism (9.20 RAS) will make him an enticing player and are certain to wow people in camp.

Smith broke his leg back in November but has now been cleared to resume practice and should be ready for the season. Although he has only had five catches in two years, they have been enormous. He’s averaging 37.6 yards per catch, and three of those five have gone for three touchdowns.

Tough break for Smith (6'0/185) who broke his leg in practice on Wednesday. The Bulldogs were finally starting to get healthy at the position when the injury occurred, including Smith who had just returned himself from an injury to catch a touchdown pass this past Saturday against Missouri. He had made an impact this season for the Bulldogs, catching three of his five passes for touchdowns.

Georgia appears to be getting healthy at the skill positions at just the right time, as both Smith (6'0/185) and Burton were able to go through pregame warmups. Smith hasn’t played since the win over UAB, while Burton has been down since Georgia shut out Arkansas on October 2. Burton is averaging just over 17 yards per reception, having caught 13 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the team is still gathering information on WR Mike Evans’ (ribs/oblique) injuries.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, “it was unclear exactly what happened to Evans.” He got hit hard in the sternum on a catch over the middle, but remained in the game for a few plays before needing help from the training staff to get off the field. Shanahan said the team couldn’t tell if Evans broke a rib or injured his oblique, but he believes those questions will be answered tomorrow, indicating Evans will likely undergo imaging. He entered the game with a hip injury. Wagoner adds that LT Trent Williams (stinger) and LB Dre Greenlaw’s (quad) injuries “seemed less severe” than Evans’ injury.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said WR Justin Jefferson (ankle) “got close” to returning a couple of times in Week 3 against the Buccaneers.

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling, the Vikings will evaluate Jefferson’s injury further, “but it didn’t sound terribly serious initially.” It sounds like Jefferson could have a chance to play in Week 4 against the Dolphins’ fantasy-friendly pass defense, though nothing is certain at this time. Stay tuned.

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane reports that Eagles TE Zach Ertz is expected to be activated off the practice squad for the Eagles’ Week 3 game against the Bears.

Ertz makes for a dicey starting option in season-long leagues, but he’s stuck around this long for a reason. It stands to reason that the Eagles will keep him on a snap count, but if he’s feeling good in-game, they could allow him to get a little extra action.

Cody White caught 1-of-3 targets for four yards and one touchdown in the Raiders’ Week 3 win over the Saints.

White has likely earned himself a roster spot with three touchdowns in two weeks. He scored via an in-breaking route on the Raiders’ eighth possession, operating as the apparent checkdown in the progression. He is not yet worth stashing, but take note of his productivity.

Broncos RB RJ Harvey (head) is questionable to return to Week 3 against the Rams.

Harvey took an awkward tackle and appeared to stumble following the play. He was removed during the commercial break and taken to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion. Harvey gained six yards on two carries prior to departing, adding 39 yards on five receptions.

Kendre Miller rushed four times for 14 yards in the Saints’ Week 3 loss to the Raiders, adding two receptions for five yards.

Miller dealt with an illness this week, but today’s performance can hardly be called sick. Miller had a chance to carve out a role after RB Travis Etienne aggravated his hamstring injury, but he didn’t do much with the opportunity. If Etienne cannot play, Miller will be a touchdown-dependent FLEX.

Alvin Kamara rushed nine times for 36 yards in the Saints’ Week 3 loss to the Raiders, adding one reception for five yards.

Kamara largely assumed lead rushing duties once RB Travis Etienne left after aggravating his hamstring injury, but it didn’t count for much. The 31-year-old Kamara will likely be the Saints’ starter next week, assuming Etienne cannot play, but he is only an FLEX play against the Falcons.

Noah Fant caught 4-of-4 targets for 33 yards and two touchdowns in the Saints’ Week 3 loss to the Raiders.

Fant chipped in two touchdowns in a game that tied an NFL record for tight end touchdowns (six). His first was on a three-yard slant. His second was an impressive catch-and-run play via play-action from 16 yards out. Fant is not on the starting radar next week against the Falcons.

Juwan Johnson caught 8-of-8 targets for 53 yards, two touchdowns and one lost fumble in the Saints’ Week 3 loss to the Raiders.

Johnson was getting open at will on out routes and shallow crossers. He and TE Noah Fant, along with the two Raiders tight ends, combined for six touchdowns, tying an NFL positional record. Johnson fumbled while trying to make a big play for his team late in the game. He attempted to stiff-arm LB Nakobe Dean, who cleanly punched the ball out for CB Eric Stokes to recover. Johnson made a real heads-up play earlier on, though. Saints QB Tyler Shough threw a bad pass to Johnson earlier on, which CB Hezekiah Masses easily picked off and returned downfield. Johnson raced after him and successfully punched the ball out with a diving hammer-fist, but the Raiders ultimately recovered that fumble, leading to a turnover for the Saints. Johnson remains a reliable TE1 against the Falcons next week.

Devaughn Vele caught 3-of-6 targets for 39 yards in the Saints’ loss to the Raiders.

Vele nearly added a decent first-down pickup to his box score, but he was unable to secure the pass as he was diving to the ground. Aside from that, he had a nice 17-yard gain in which he ripped his leg away from a would-be tackler and scampered away for a few extra yards. Vele is a boom-bust FLEX against the Falcons next week.
