Benford (toe) officially ruled out vs Patriots

Bills declared CB Christian Benford, WR Skyler Bell, OL Jude Bowry, OL Ar’maj Reed-Adams, DL T.J. Sanders, OLB Mike Danna, and S Jalon Kilgore inactive for Week 4 against the Patriots.

No real surprises here. Benford was listed as questionable heading into the day, but he didn’t practice at all this week so he was never likely to play. Rookie Davison Igbinosun is likely to step into his spot opposite Maxwell Hairston, which makes the Bills young and inexperienced on the boundary. Perhaps Drake Maye could finally take advantage of that on the way to his first truly good fantasy game of the season.

Maye also added 53 yards rushing on eight carries. This was easily the best game of Maye’s season. The Bills had pressure in his face often, but Maye was frequently able to evade pass rushers and pick up chunk gains with his legs. When he did have time to throw, he ripped off big passes downfield and could have even had a bigger day after a potential 40+ yard pass slipped through Romeo Doubs’ hands in the fourth quarter. Maye did wince and grab his right shoulder on one hit, so that will be something to watch during practice this week, but we don’t expect him to miss any time. The bad news is that Maye figures to be without Mack Hollins (calf) in Week 5, and A.J. Brown (ankle) is not yet ready to return, so Maye will play with limited options next week against the Raiders.
  • BUF Cornerback #47
Despite the questionable listing, Benford did not appear in the media portion of practice on Friday. At best, he’ll be listed as limited later today. Benford seems to be on the pessimistic side of questionable for Week 4.
  • BUF Cornerback #47
The Bills’ No. 1 cornerback is on the wrong side of questionable through two Week 4 practices. Fortunately, the Patriots’ wide receiver corps is nothing to write home about.
  • BUF Cornerback #47
Benford missed the second half of Week 3’s win over the Chargers with the toe injury. He was spotted in a boot after the game. A DNP today puts him on the wrong side of questionable for Week 4. That should make Buffalo an easier matchup for Drake Maye, but fantasy managers might have already thrown in the towel on Maye, and rightfully so.
  • NE Quarterback #10
We are happy to see that the Patriots’ quarterback is practicing fully, but this is a new injury for Maye. He notably dealt with a throwing shoulder injury during the Patriots’ playoff run last season. His listing raises questions as to whether there might be a lingering issue. We expect a follow-up report on this in the coming days.
  • NE Quarterback #10
Maye, after another meltdown in Week 3 against the Jaguars, has now posted a negative drop back EPA in six dtraight outings dating back to last season. Against Jacksonville on Sunday he posted a meager 40 percent drop back success rate, the fifth lowest of the week. “What’s fallen apart with Maye looks like it’s between the ears as much as anything physical,” Graff said. “He looks like a quarterback whose confidence is shot.” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said this week that Maye needs to calm down if things are going to turn around. “We need to stop trying to choke the life out of every single play,” Vrabel said during his Monday radio appearance. “We need to relax.” Maye through Week 3 ranks 32nd in fantasy points per drop back, below the likes of Daniel Jones and Cam Ward. It will be tough to start Maye in Week 4 against Buffalo if there are other viable QB options on the waiver wire.
  • NE Quarterback #10
He fumbled twice, losing one to the Jags defense. Maye was under duress and missing routine throws for most of this game. He also had a long touchdown throw and a rushing touchdown called back on penalties. Without A.J. Brown (ankle) in the lineup the Patriots have no one to threaten secondaries, allowing opposing defenses to stack the box, shut down the run game, and leave the Pats a one-dimensional offense. Though Maye’s rushing could keep him afloat as a top-12 quarterback in Week 4 against the Bills, he should be considered a shaky option for now. New England’s offensive line might be able to hold up against a Buffalo front seven that has struggled to pressure the passer.
  • BUF Cornerback #47
Benford was in coverage away from the ball when he planted to run forward and came up hobbling. He went down and then later gingerly walked off the field with trainers. Considering Benford previously missed games with a toe injury last season, this is something to monitor in the coming weeks. Davison Igbinosun will come in to take Benford’s place.

It was a defensive slugfest for the Patriots and Steelers in Week 2, with neither team passing for a touchdown on the day. Maye added 17 rushing yards on four carries but took three sacks, including one in the red zone in the second quarter. His interception was a floater in Steelers territory in the third quarter, tossed right to Patrick Queen to end a drive. He ends the day with 44-percent of his passing yards coming on two third-quarter chunk plays to Romeo Doubs. Maye has had a rough start to the season, following up a three-interception Week 1 with a scoreless, one-interception Week 2. He faces another solid defense in the Jaguars for Week 3; Maye’s rushing upside keeps him in the low-end QB1 territory for next week.
  • NE Quarterback #10
Maye once again struggled with Seattle’s ironclad defense, routinely making poor decisions when attempting to push the ball downfield. His third, and worst, interception of the night came when he lobbed a pass off his back foot at Mack Hollins with under 30 seconds left. The throw fell well short of his target and Josh Jobe made a toe-tapping pick in the end zone. Maye only threw multiple interceptions once last year, including the postseason. That came in his Super Bowl loss to the Seahawks. His multi-pick total is already at one this year, again at the hands of Seattle. It’s a long season, but Maye did nothing to silence the “schedule merchant” claims tonight. He will look to rebound as a mid-range QB1 versus the Steelers next week. That could be without A.J. Brown, who left this game with an ankle injury and did not return.

John Metchie caught 3-of-5 targets for 37 yards in the Panthers’ Week 4 win over the Lions.

Metchie operated as the WR2 in the absence of both Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette but was unable to return any fantasy utility on a night second-year receiver Tetairoa McMillan set new career highs in both receptions and yardage. Fantasy managers that were coaxed into adding Metchie through the injuries in Carolina can safely return him to the waiver from whence he came.

Darren Waller caught 3-of-6 targets for 36 yards in the Panthers’ Week 4 win over the Lions.

Waller saw minimal involvement as quarterback Bryce Young leaned into his top option through the air, feeding Tetairoa McMillan 16 targets on 41 pass attempts in the absence of both Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette. Fantasy managers that scooped Waller off of waivers following his two-touchdown game in Week 2 are surely left disappointed in the recent returns, making Waller a potential drop candidate as the Panthers head to their bye.

Tetairoa McMillan caught 14-of-16 targets for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers’ Week 4 win over the Lions.

McMillan set career highs in both receptions and yardage in the first half with nine catches for 147 yards before the break. He operated as the clear alpha in a pass attack without both Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, routinely dusting everyone the Lions had at their disposal in an injury-ravaged secondary. While the receiving line surely turns heads, fantasy managers were left even more ecstatic about the way in which he was utilized, with the second-year receiver catching six passes for 94 yards and both touchdowns while aligned in the slot. Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik is providing structure, sequencing, and situational tendencies unlike anything fans had grown accustomed to when head coach Dave Canales was helming the offense, resulting in quarterback Bryce Young leading the league in passing while averaging more than 30 points per game through the first month of play. McMillan’s ceiling remains sky-high as a legitimate WR1 when the Panthers square off against the Eagles fin Week 6 following their bye.

Chuba Hubbard rushed 20 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers’ Week 4 win over the Lions, adding seven yards on one reception.

Hubbard’s successes on the ground allowed the Panthers to remain balanced on a night they were without two of their top three wide receivers due to the absences of Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, cashing in on two scores from 15 and two yards out. Hubbard appears to be locked into an RB1 workload in the absence of Jonathan Brooks, who will be out for 6-8 weeks after undergoing core muscle surgery. His 26 opportunities dwarfed the six of current backup AJ Dillon, the latter of whom gained just seven total yards on six touches. Fantasy managers can start Hubbard with confidence when the team returns from their bye to face the Eagles in Week 6.

Bryce Young completed 29-of-41 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers’ Week 4 win over the Lions, adding three yards on three carries.

The NFL’s passing leader through four weeks, pending Monday Night Football, took complete advantage of a defense still working to find their identity through the first month of play, leaning on his top option in Tetairoa McMillan throughout. Young now leads the league in passing and can only be caught by Tyler Shough on Monday Night Football, while only Kirk Cousins and Brock Purdy have more touchdown passes than Young’s nine. Even more impressive was the fact that he did what he did to the Lions without two of his top three receivers with both Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette out of action in Week 4. Young and the Panthers head to their Week 5 bye at 2-2 and alone atop the NFC South, soon to be joined by the winner on Monday night. He’ll be a legitimate QB1 when he returns to action against the Eagles in Week 6.

Sam LaPorta caught 8-of-13 targets for 84 yards and a touchdown in the Lions’ Week 4 loss to the Panthers.

LaPorta was the primary beneficiary against the single-high-heavy Panthers, which was interesting considering both of Carolina’s top two corners were absent from this game. The 13 targets were easily a season high for the veteran tight end, primarily the result of 52 Jared Goff pass attempts in what would become a negative game script. LaPorta routinely found space behind the linebackers as the primary outlet through pressure for Goff, and while it remains unlikely he repeats the lofty target totals, LaPorta’s red zone acumen keeps him a fantasy TE1 ahead of a very different matchup in the two-high-heavy Cardinals in Week 5.

Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 8-of-11 targets for 75 yards in the Lions’ Week 4 loss to the Panthers.

It was quite the disappointing outing for the fantasy darling considering the Panthers were without their top two corners, with opposing defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero dialing up consistent pressure that caused quarterback Jared Goff fits throughout the evening. Two of Goff’s incompletions that were directed at St. Brown were batted down at the line of scrimmage, ultimately enough to keep St. Brown out of the end zone for the first time this season. St. Brown remains a top-tier WR1 ahead of a potential shootout against the Cardinals in Week 5.

Jameson Williams caught 6-of-8 targets for 102 yards in the Lions’ Week 4 loss to the Panthers.

Fantasy managers had suffered through three down games with the middle-round pick before Williams was able to take advantage of a Carolina secondary missing its top two corners. He was kept out of the end zone for the fourth consecutive contest to start the 2026 season but returned his first fantasy-viable outing on the backs of 52 Jared Goff pass attempts. While that level of volume is unlikely to be the norm for the Lions, a Week 5 meeting with the Cardinals provides another opportunity for Williams to return value in a potential shootout. Williams will be an upside WR3.

Jahmyr Gibbs rushed 15 times for 46 yards and a touchdown in the Lions’ Week 4 loss to the Panthers, adding 31 yards on four receptions.

Gibbs had eclipsed 100 combined yards against all three opponents to start the season before the Panthers held him largely in check, with fantasy’s top asset cashing in on a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter to avoid a disastrous outing. The two teams were knotted at 16 entering the half but it was the Panthers that dictated terms following the break, winning the time of possession battle by over six minutes. Gibbs maintained an elite workload by seeing all but two backfield opportunities and every available carry on the evening, keeping his fantasy value sky-high ahead of a potential shootout against the Cardinals in Week 5.

Jared Goff completed 32-of-52 passes for 412 yards and one touchdown in the Lions’ 32-26, Week 4 loss to the Panthers.

Goff has now thrown a touchdown pass in 27 straight contests, a streak that started in the team’s Thanksgiving day contest against the Bears in 2024. He could move into sixth on the all-time list for consecutive games with a touchdown pass should he throw for at least one touchdown in each game this season. He came within four minutes of breaking that streak against the Panthers, needing a late touchdown to tight end Sam LaPorta to keep it alive in a game the Panthers dictated with their defense throughout. Goff also maintained his clean sheet of no interceptions thrown to start the season but it wasn’t enough to overcome a defense that ceded 445 yards of total offense to a Panthers team without two of their top three wide receivers in Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette. The Lions fall to 2-2, now two games behind the division-leading Vikings through the first month of play. Goff remains a surefire QB1 ahead of a potential shootout against the Cardinals in Week 5.
