ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports free agent RB Joe Mixon is working out for the Seahawks on Monday.

Just months after Mixon reportedly told teammates his career was over, the 30-year-old back is now set to work out for the Seahawks. With rookie Jadarian Price (chest) on injured reserve and Zach Charbonnet still working his way back from an Achilles injury, the Seahawks could have room to add Mixon, who last took a regular-season snap in Week 18 of the 2024 season. If Mixon does sign with the Seahawks, it’s hard to imagine him making an immediate fantasy impact. Emanuel Wilson totaled 25 opportunities in Week 4’s win over the Chargers, and with Charbonnet’s 21-day window now open, Mixon’s path to playing time could become crowded rather quickly. We’ll see if his visit leads to a signing, but we wouldn’t rush to plug Mixon into our lineups anytime soon, even if he does sign.

We’re looking for an anti-transaction tag. Mixon will remain a free agent after the first real interest he received since being released by the Texans in March. It’s not broadly encouraging for his chances of reviving his career that the Seahawks took a look at his medicals and said “no thanks.”

Mixon failed to stick with an NFL franchise during the 2025 season after starting 14 games for the Texans in 2024. The 30-year-old back has over 1,800 carries at the professional level to his name and brings a veteran presence to a Seattle backfield reeling the wake of rookie Jadarian Price’s placement on injured reserve. Zach Charbonnet saw his 21-day practice window activated as he attempts to return from injured reserve, although it could take him another week or two to be activated considering the timing of his knee injury a season ago. Emanuel Wilson could see another week of lead-back usage alongside George Holani as Mixon gets up to speed with the offense.

Wilson did note that a source close to Mixon told him that there is “some hope”, though it doesn’t sound awfully likely that Mixon ever steps on a football field again. Mixon was unable to play last year after injuring his foot and undergoing surgery on his own. The Texans seemed to be in the dark throughout the process and were never able to give a clear answer on when or if Mixon would return. They went on to cut him after he missed the entire 2025 season. Per Wilson, Mixon needed another surgery this offseason. Even if he does somehow return to action, there has been no indication that it will happen this year.

He was released with a non-football injury designation. All the Texans did in the last calendar year when asked about whether Mixon would play in 2025 or 2026 is answer questions with the preface of “we’re not trying to be evasive, but...” So, we’re not trying to be evasive, but we genuinely are not sure if Mixon will play again. He turns 30 in July and is now a year removed from what was a pretty stellar 2024 campaign with the Texans. He surely has the talent to resurface somewhere, but is he healthy? And if not, will he ever be?
  • HOU Running Back #5
Just days after it was reported that Montgomery wanted out of Detroit — a report he refuted — the veteran running back is now on his way to Houston. The soon-to-be 29-year-old will presumably take over as the Texans’ RB1 this season with Joe Mixon likely on the way out, and Woody Marks an early candidate to handle more of a passing-downs role. Montgomery rushed 343 times for 1,491 yards and 20 touchdowns in his final two seasons in Detroit while catching another 60 passes for 533 scoreless yards. Barring an extension, Montgomery will enter 2026 with two years left on his contract with a chance to earn another deal in 2028. In addition to Scruggs, the Texans also sent a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Lions.

Nick Caserio said earlier today that he “thinks” Mixon had a surgery this offseason and that he was “not trying to be evasive.” We’re earnestly surprised Mixon is still on the roster at this point, and the fact that the Texans keep defending him and pointing at the idea of him getting back to full health makes it feel like they’re taking this a lot more seriously than anyone on the outside is. We defer to Wilson’s sources here, who also add that the Texans will “explore” the “high-end free agent running back market.”

Mixon reportedly underwent some procedures on his foot on his own and did not run it by the team’s medical staff last offseason. There were seemingly complications and he did not suit up for the 2025 season. The team never gave a clear answer as to what was going on with Mixon’s foot. Caserio saying they haven’t seen Mixon in a while might mean they know just as little as we do. Even if Mixon can play in 2026, we don’t expect that to happen in Houston. The Texans can cut him for $8 million in cap savings this offseason. We fully expect them to do so.

Ryans continues to downplay any conversation surrounding Mixon, who missed all of the 2025 season with a foot injury. It was reported in late December that some of Mixon’s issues stemmed from some procedures he got “on his own, away from the Texans,” which could complicate his future with the team and the contract he signed that will keep him with the team through 2026. It’s impossible to say where things truly stand with Mixon and the Texans right now after Ryans and the team spent a full season avoiding the topic, but it seems unlikely he would return to the team next season given how things have played out since Mixon was mysteriously injured last offseason.
  • HOU Running Back #28
Per Wilson, Mixon “got some procedures on his own, away from the Texans, not from the Texans medical personnel, and it apparently affected the foot, the blood flow, and progress turned into a stall.” The major takeaway is Wilson saying that “the reason there’s so much mystery about this is because Joe Mixon prefers it that way ... there was electromagnetic therapy that was done to try to reduce inflammation in the foot.” The easy outside assumption has been that the Texans will simply release Mixon after the season. It would be interesting to see if there were grievances if they did decide to toll his contract — the Texans did pay Mixon his full salary this year rather than coming after it. This update at least opens the door that Mixon could return to the Texans in 2026. Wilson repeated that Mixon will not return in the 2025 season, including the playoffs.
  • HOU Running Back #28
Mixon will remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season. For what it’s worth, Mixon responded on X: The Everything App by asking “Ian how do you know more about me than me?” with a definitely-not-mad thinkingface emoji. The veteran back popped up with a mysterious foot injury during the offseason that landed him in a walking boot. Reports indicated that he would be back quickly, but that never materialized and his hypothetical return date was kicked down the road time and time again. Texans GM Nick Caserio continued to give non-answers on Mixon’s stats throughout the season, foreshadowing this outcome. Mixon is under contract for one more year, but the Texans can save $8.5 million by cutting him in the offseason. That seems like an inevitability after a lost season for the 29-year-old. Woody Marks will lead the backfield going forward while Nick Chubb will be in the mix as a backup.

Patriots brought in free agent RB Jamaal Williams for a workout.

The Pats brought in an interesting name to work out for the backfield this week, bringing in former Packers, Lions, and Saints running back Jamaal Williams. The 31-year-old last appeared in the NFL for the Saints in 2024, tallying 164 rushing yards that season. He had a career year for the Lions in 2022, totaling 1,000 yards on the ground and leading the league in rushing touchdowns. The Patriots are looking for some depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson; there is no indication Williams will sign, but he will be practice squad depth if he does.

Giants WR Braxton Berrios (foot) announced he will need season-ending surgery.

Berrios announced on his Instagram that he will need season-ending surgery for his foot injury that landed him on injured reserve. The 31-year-old is primarily a special teamer, returning four punts and five kicks this season. Injuries have prevented Berrios from appearing in more than 14 games over the last three seasons and he now has his season end early as he requires foot surgery.

Broncos signed WR Cam Ross to their practice squad.

With Pat Bryant (ankle) suffering a multi-week injury in Week 4, the Broncos are adding to their wide receiver depth by signing Ross to the practice squad. The 25-year-old Ross was an undrafted free agent out of Virginia who spent training camp with the Broncos before he was let go in final cuts. Ross now re-joins the practice squad. EDGE Jahfari Harvey was let go from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Cardinals signed OL Jedrick Wills off Buffalo’s practice squad.

He’ll replace Paris Johnson, who heads to season-ending injured reserve. Wills, the former 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft, will compete with 2026 seventh-rounder Jayden Williams for reps at left tackle in Johnson’s absence.

Buccaneers LB Josiah Trotter (knee) did not practice on Tuesday.

It was a mid-week downgrade after a limited estimated session on Monday. Trotter’s in real danger of missing Thursday night’s game against the Cowboys.

Buccaneers kicker Chase McLaughlin (right groin/hip) did not practice on Tuesday.

It was an addition to the report. Never a great sign, especially on a short week. The Buccaneers aren’t carrying a practice-squad kicker, so expect some workouts as they try to find someone you won’t be starting in fantasy football with Jalon Daniels under center.

Cardinals placed TE Hunter Long (knee) on injured reserve.

He’ll miss at least the next four weeks. Long had played 91 snaps in his first four weeks with the Cardinals and will cede blocking duties to promoted practice-squadder Teagan Quitoriano for those of you in points-per-blocked-players leagues.

OT Lane Johnson retired from the NFL after 14 seasons.

We’d heard word through former Eagles EDGE Brandon Graham on a post-game show that this was on the table following Week 4, but it’s still a stunner to see it come to fruition. Johnson cites that his “personal and family priorities” have changed in his post about retiring. The stalwart Eagles right tackle made two first-team All-Pro appearances and three second teams, along with six Pro Bowls. Markel Bell started in his stead in Week 4 and should be expected to get the playing time at right tackle going forward.

Browns designated QB Dillon Gabriel (back/IR) for return.

His 21-day practice window will open up. There’s obviously no rush to promote him to the active roster with the Browns already dressing three quarterbacks every week, so this is probably just starting a ticking clock on a trade or cut from the quarterback room.
