Buccaneers declare QB Baker Mayfield inactive

Buccaneers declared QB Baker Mayfield, S Antoine Winfield, CB Benjamin Morrison, LB SirVoce Dennis, DL DeMonte Capehart, G Billy Schrauth and OG Luke Haggard inactive for Week 5 against the Cowboys.

Mayfield will miss another game due to the dislocated thumb injury he suffered in Week 3. His absence badly impacts the offense as a whole. Winfield’s absence in the secondary will also make it tough for a Tampa Bay defense tasked with slowing the Cowboys’ top-tier passing attack.
Defense costs Cowboys again vs. UDFA QB Daniels
Dan Patrick recaps the TNF action that saw the Buccaneers beat the Cowboys in Arlington, where the offense sputtered and shoddy defense cost the home team once again while facing UDFA rookie QB Jalon Daniels.

This was just a formality as Mayfield is expected to miss between three and six weeks with a dislocated thumb. Jalon Daniels will make his second start tomorrow against the Cowboys. Daniels struggled through the air in Week 4, throwing for just 148 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He did, however, add 55 yards on the ground. His legs will keep him in the QB2 mix for Week 5.

Mayfield is expected to miss “anywhere from three to six weeks” with his thumb injury, so it’s not at all surprising to see him listed as a DNP for Monday’s practice. We wouldn’t expect Mayfield to practice at all this week in the days leading up to Thursday’s matchup against the Cowboys. We’ll see if things change next week when the Bucs begin prepping for Week 6 against the Steelers. Rookie UDFA Jalon Daniels is expected to make his second career start on Thursday.

Previous reports put the timeline at 2-4 weeks, so it’s possible the injury is worse than initially expected. The good news is that testing revealed no ligament or tendon damage in Mayfield’s thumb. Per Schefter, Mayfield’s return will depend on how quickly he can grip the ball. That is typically the first step in throwing a football. For now, UDFA rookie Jalon Daniels will draw the start. He is worth a look in Superflex leagues but can’t be played in one-quarterback formats.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Mayfield dislocated his thumb in Week 3’s loss against the Vikings. The 31-year-old quarterback had no ligament or tendon damage. According to Pelissero, it would be tough but not impossible for Mayfield to return in Week 5, making Week 6 against the Steelers the more likely return date. Jalon Daniels will start for the Buccaneers against the Packers in Week 4.

In addition to a clean report on his ligaments and tendons, the MRI also revealed no fracture. This is as good of news as the Buccaneers could have hoped for, as Mayfield’s absence is expected to be on the shorter end compared to what it could have been had the MRI revealed more damage. Head coach Todd Bowles said Mayfield is looking at a minimum three-week absence, which would put him in line to return for Week 7 against the Panthers if all goes well. Rookie UDFA Jalon Daniels, who went 0-for-3 passing with an interception against the Vikings, will draw the start in the Buccaneers’ Week 4 game against the Packers.

This is the “best-case” scenario, according to Rap. Mayfield will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of his injury and could miss more time if an MRI reveals “significantly torn ligaments in his thumb,” per Rap. The Buccaneers will now pivot to rookie UDFA Jalon Daniels as their starter after Daniels won the backup job in camp. Daniels threw for 9,282 yards, 67 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions in six seasons at Kansas while also rushing for over 1,400 yards and another 23 scores. All Buccaneers pass-catchers will receive a significant downgrade heading into Week 4’s game against the Packers.
  • TB Quarterback #6
The Buccaneers’ quarterback slammed his throwing hand into a Vikings defender this afternoon and remained down for a while after the play. UDFA rookie QB Jalon Daniels is next up on the depth chart and would be the presumptive starter next week against the Packers if Mayfield cannot play.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Mayfield was down for a while after taking a big hit from two Vikings defenders late in the fourth quarter, and replays showed his thumb slamming against one of the Minnesota players in a way that might suggest a serious thumb injury on his throwing hand. An extended absence for Mayfield could prove disastrous for Tampa’s pass catchers, as undrafted free agent QB Jalon Daniels would be the team’s starter. Mayfield threw for 217 yards, one touchdown, and one interception before his exit. Daniels would be an interesting superflex add considering his rushing ability.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Mayfield didn’t speak to reporters after practice because of the illness, but the team didn’t limit his practice reps. It’s possible the Bucs lighten his workload over the next two days, but he should be good to go for Sunday’s game against the Vikings. Mayfield will look to get back on track after a sluggish start to the season. He has fallen into the QB2 ranks until further notice.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Mayfield, after throwing for just 216 yards and fumbling three times in Week 1 against the Bengals, was just as bad against Cleveland. He took three sacks and held on to the ball far too long on several drop backs in the second half. His only touchdown went to a wide open Emeka Egbuka from eight yards out. Mayfield missed a couple easy throws that could have gone for long gains, and overthrew Ted Hurst three times after Hurst had beaten the Cleveland secondary. With his late-season struggles bleeding into the 2026 campaign, Mayfield won’t be a one-QB league option in Week 3 against the Vikings.

Chig Okonkwo (hamstring) is not on the final injury report for Week 5 against the Giants.

Okonkwo got in a full practice on Friday after consecutive limited sessions. With Stefon Diggs (hamstring) out, Terry McLaurin (hamstring) questionable and Jayden Daniels (elbow) returning, Okonkwo could warrant top-12 positional treatment this week.

Quentin Johnston (chest) won’t play in Los Angeles’ Week 5 game against the Broncos.

Johnston got in limited sessions on Thursday and Friday, so it was surprising to see him sent straight to “not playing.” Tre’ Harris figures to step in as Los Angeles’ top outside receiver by snaps this week and is a worthwhile FLEX play, even against a formidable Broncos defense.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) is not on the final injury report for Week 5 against the Giants.

Croskey-Merritt logged two limited sessions to begin the week before upgrading to full on Friday. He should be good to go for this normal weekly role. Unfortunately, his workloads have varied, so he is more of an upside FLEX starter than he is an RB2. That said, Jayden Daniels (elbow) is returning this week, which should give the offense an efficiency boost.

Ladd McConkey (foot) is questionable for Los Angeles’ Week 5 game against the Broncos.

McConkey did not practice all week — though they might tack something on in the non-media period on Friday to make it look better — and is clearly just trying to gut it out at this point. He’ll likely be on a snap count if he does play. But Denver’s cornerback room is severely banged up, so McConkey likely remains in low-end WR2 range this week.

Chris Bell (knee) is not on Miami’s final Week 5 injury report.

He’ll be a FLEX dart throw against the Bengals. Bell continues to get listed with his knee injury as the Dolphins bring him along slowly, but he seems wheels up for Sundays as things currently stand.

Caleb Douglas (ankle) won’t play in Miami’s Week 5 game against the Bengals.

Douglas has not practiced or played since Week 2. If only there were some sort of “injured reserve list” he could be placed on. Ah well.

Commanders CB Trey Amos (ankle) is questionable to play in Week 5 against the Giants.

Amos has not yet played in 2026, and appears to be truly questionable this week. The Commanders need all the help they can get on defense, but holding him out another week could be the smart move for his long-term health.

Terry McLaurin (hamstring) is questionable to play in Week 5 against the Giants.

McLaurin could end up playing here, but he would be a risk for an in-game aggravation. The Commanders’ No. 1 wide receiver was sidelined on Wednesday and Thursday before upgrading to a limited session on Friday. Hopefully, weekend reports on the injury shed light on things. If active, he is a WR2 if active.

Jaylen Wright (foot) is questionable for Miami’s Week 5 game against the Bengals.

Wright was limited on Thursday and Friday after seemingly reinjuring his foot. He feels like a true wild card for Sunday. Ollie Gordon-reliant managers would be delighted if Wright was ruled out, as it appears Kaytron Allen, who was just claimed on waivers today, would be the backup if Wright can’t go.

Colbie Young (knee) is questionable for Cincinnati’s Week 5 game against the Dolphins.

Young went limited-full-limited in three practices this week. The Bengals may be elevating a wideout or two off the practice squad. The Friday downgrade isn’t a great sign for the 2026 fourth-rounder.
