NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Cam Skattebo’s shoulder injury is “not a concern.”

Skattebo was cleared from the injury report on Friday, so he was never going to miss this game. The good news is that the Giants don’t have any plans to limit his workload. Playing in a rain-soaked matchup with the NFC East rival Commanders, Skattebo is expected to see “an extremely heavy workload”, according to Garafolo.
Florio: Hurts controversy needs full examination
Mike Florio explains why unanswered questions remain in the Jalen Hurts controversy, including whether the NFLPA will seek a formal investigation and whether Hurts could consider legal action.

Skattebo was benched for his fumbling issues last week. He did not touch the ball once, while Najee Harris, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary all got a few opportunities. The team then cut Harris a few days after Sunday’s loss. After a week in the doghouse, Skattebo appears to be back as the team’s top runner, though we still expect a committee approach from John Harbaugh. Rapoport even said that it’s unclear who will draw the start, so we aren’t sold on Skattebo as a safe fantasy option this week. At best, he’s a high-risk RB3.

Sigh. Three-player backfields are generally fantasy-unfriendly situations, and this one is no different. Skattebo is a capable dual-threat player who has seemingly been limited by the significant ankle injury he suffered last year. The Giants could get him more involved in the passing game, but Tracy can contribute there as well, muddying that opportunity. Singletary would not be a contributor for many NFL teams, but lucky him, he’s a New York Giant. Skattebo and Tracy are viable FLEX options, though both are likely touchdown-dependent.

Hughes makes clear that he thinks Skattebo’s time as the clear-cut lead back is over, recapping coach John Harbaugh’s offseason attempts to acquire a bellcow, while noting that Skattebo is currently in the doghouse. Hughes believes Skattebo is a nice complementary player who can function as a physical change-of-pace option. The biggest issue the Giants face in replacing him is cost. He thinks a player like Jonathan Taylor will cost a Day 2 pick, at least, and he is not sure Taylor is worth that, given the Giants’ long-term plans for the 2027 draft capital they’ve accrued via various personnel moves. Trading away Kayvon Thibodeaux is an option, but doing so is challenging with Brian Burns (knee) out for the year.

The move comes a couple days after Harris criticized the New York coaching staff for its handling of the backfield touch distribution. “It’s hard to get into a rhythm with one or two plays...if you’re getting a play here and then get taken out for a series, there’s nothing you could do,” Harris said after the Giants’ Week 6 loss to the Saints. “I’ve never been through none of this before.” Harris had 31 rushes for 99 scoreless yards before getting the boot. With Harris gone, Cam Skattebo could get another chance to see increased playing time after being all but benched last week. Tyrone Tracy, who led the team in rushing attempts against New Orleans, could be the de facto lead back for now.
  • NYG Running Back #29
Tyrone Tracy appeared to do the most with his opportunities last week, scoring the game’s only two touchdowns. Najee Harris was bottled up and Cam Skattebo was soft benched while Devin Singletary led the team in snaps while they were in comeback mode for most of the second half. By the letter of what he’s offering here, Tracy is probably the player who should get the majority of the snaps against the Texans. In actuality, we have no idea what will happen here and this quote doesn’t really help us. “I don’t like (rotating backs) either,” Harbaugh said per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan after the game. “One of those guys needs to step up. Somebody needs to step up and be the back. And none of those guys have done that yet.” We suspect we’ll be diving beat writer opinions ahead of Sunday.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Before the game, it was widely reported that the Giants would start Najee Harris with Skattebo dealing with fumbling issues to start the season. This was indeed the case as Skattebo saw zero touches and just six snaps on the day, last among all four Giants running backs. After the game, head coach John Harbaugh insisted the team did not bench Skattebo, but it’s hard to see this as anything else. Fantasy managers will be hoping Skattebo will be out of the dog house after no Giants running backs surpassed 20 yards rushing against a poor Saints run defense. He is cautiously in the RB3 ranks until further notice.
  • NYG Running Back #23
Fowler was adding to a report from Jordan Raanan, who said Harris is “likely to have a larger role with Cam Skattebo downgraded but still part of the mix after the fumbles.” Skattebo has indeed struggled with fumbles, putting the ball on the ground four times this year. No running back has more fumbles, and Skattebo’s most recent blunder cost the Giants a shot at an overtime win versus the Commanders last week. They instead settled for a tie. Even if Skattebo winds up leading the team in carries this week, he was only valuable for fantasy managers because of his high-volume role. With that out the window, Skattebo is buried in the RB3 ranks for Week 6.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Giants beat writer Dan Duggan chimed in with “I would be very surprised if [Cam] Skattebo has the same RB1 workload on Sunday that he’s had in the first five games.” Skattebo has put the ball on the ground four times in the first five games. Najee Harris has one in 27 carries and Tyrone Tracy has added two. It sounds like Harris may start to be a significant thorn in the side of Skattebo-reliant managers.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Skattebo rushed for just 12 yards on six carries in the first half as he and the Giants struggled on the ground for most of the day. He would come up with a few big runs in the second half, one of which resulted in a 19-yard gain in overtime as the Giants were attempting to drive into position for a game-winning field goal. Unfortunately for Skattebo, disaster struck later on the drive when he lost a fumble on the Commanders’ 24-yard line, which was recovered by Washington and ended any hopes of a Giants’ victory. Poor late-game clock management by the Commanders made Skattebo’s fumble a little less costly, as the two sides would end Sunday’s game in a tie, but it’s impossible to overstate how big a 4-1 start to the season would be for the Giants, who are playing in a struggling NFC East. Skattebo hasn’t rushed for more than 81 yards in any game this season and has only one touchdown to his name. His reliable volume continues to put him in fringe RB1/RB2 territory, but it’s been a disappointing start for the second-year back. He’ll look to turn things around next week against the Saints.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Skattebo was limited in Wednesday and Thursday’s practices but will be good to go in what he called a “slogfest” on Sunday against the Commanders. With rain and wind forecast for Sunday’s game, the Giants will likely lean heavily on Skattebo, who has rushed for 68-235-1 this season while averaging a subpar 3.5 YPC. Skattebo profiles as a volume-based RB2 against a defense that has been stout against the run out of the gate.

Alvin Kamara rushed six times for five yards in the Saints’ Week 8 loss to the Steelers, adding seven receptions for 57 yards.

Tyler Shough ended up leading the Saints with seven rushing yards. Yikes. Kamara was effective as a receiver out of the backfield, but to say that New Orleans struggled to run the ball is quite the understatement; finishing with 18 yards on 17 attempts. The good news for fantasy managers that used Kamara is that he was effective out of the backfield as a receiver, but it’s a modest day for the 31-year-old. Kamara and the Saints will try and get something going after a bye against the Browns in Week 9.

DK Metcalf caught 2-of-6 targets for 56 yards in the Steelers’ Week 7 win over the Saints.

After having a whopping 15 targets in the Week 6 win over the Bucs, Metcalf was essentially a non-factor in this one. He was able to haul in a 51-yard connection that set up the lone touchdown for the Steelers, but for the second time in three weeks, Metcalf was held under four catches. He’ll be a volatile WR2/3 for Week 8 in a matchup with the Browns.

Rico Dowdle rushed nine times for 48 yards in the Steelers’ Week 7 win over the Saints, adding six catches for 45 yards.

Dowdle was the clear backup to Jaylen Warren, but he was able to have a solid day thanks in large part to checkdowns from Aaron Rodgers. The 28-year-old had a long rush of 16 yards, and the toe injury that sidelined him earlier in the campaign doesn’t appear to be bothering him. Dowdle is a FLEX option for Week 8 against the Browns, at best.

Jaylen Warren rushed 18 times for 101 yards in the Steelers’ Week 7 win over the Saints, adding three catches for 36 yards.

Warren got off to a hot start with 43 yards on the first drive, with 29 of those coming on a play that set up a short field goal. He totaled 78 yards in the first half, but found the sledding a little tougher in the final two periods with the Saints focused on stuffing the run. He outcarried Rico Dowdle 18-9, although Dowdle did add six catches to make the touches a little more even. Warren will look to impress again in Week 8 against the Browns’ front seven.

Tyler Shough completed 30-of-38 passes for 273 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Saints’ 16-10, Week 7 loss to the Steelers.

Shough’s seven rushing yards led the team, which isn’t ideal. The 27-year-old was mostly accurate and on-time with his throws, but he should have had three turnovers on the first half — one dropped interception, one strip-sack that was overturned and one fumble that luckily went out of bounds — and he threw a costly red-zone interception. It wasn’t Shough at his best, but there were some flashes of brilliance in the loss. Shough will get a bye week before he faces the Browns in Week 9.

Aaron Rodgers completed 19-of-30 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers’ 16-10, Week 7 win over the Saints.

Rodgers dinked and dunked for the overwhelming majority of the game with over half of his completions coming to his running backs. He did connect with DK Metcalf for a 51-yard connection on a beautiful deep ball, and he found Darnell Washington for his lone scoring play. Outside of that passing touchdown, the biggest play for Rodgers was a scramble on third-and-six just before the two-minute warning that essentially cemented the game. Rodgers and the Steelers move to 5-2 with the win in Paris, and they’ll face the Browns in Week 8. He’ll be a QB2 for that contest, on paper.

Za’Darius Smith (neck) and Gervon Dexter Sr. (hamstring) will both play in Week 7 against the 49ers.

Both defenders were both listed as questionable for the Falcons, but both of them will be able to suit up, which is great news for the Falcons against a really banged-up 49ers offense. It remains to be seen if either player will play a full complement of snaps.

Falcons declared WR Olamide Zaccheaus, QB Jack Strand, QB Andy Dalton, RB Brian Robinson Jr., LB Divine Deablo, CB Avieon Terrell, and DB Billy Bowman Jr. inactive for Week 7 against the 49ers.

Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) was ruled out earlier in the week, and Zaccheaus is dealing with a shoulder injury and will not be able to suit up for this one. That could mean more work in the receiving game for rookie Zachariah Branch, who might be worth a stash in deeper formats in case a solid game today earns him a bigger role moving forward.

Denzel Ward (hand) is active for Week 7 against the Titans.

Ward missed some practice time this week with a right hand injury. He’ll suit up against Cam Ward and the atrocious Titans passing attack. Browns declared QB Taylen Green, LB Justin Jefferson, CB Noah Igbinoghene, RB Audric Estime, DT Mike Hall Jr., and C Parker Brailsford inactive against Tennessee.

49ers declared DE Nick Bosa, WR Mike Evans, WR Deebo Samuel, LB Luke Gifford, LB Garret Wallow, S Marques Sigle, and QB Kurtis Rourke inactive for Week 7 against the Falcons.

None of these comes as a surprise. All of Bosa, Evans, and Samuel were already ruled out earlier in the week, and Sigle has missed multiple weeks with an ankle injury. Brandin Cooks and Christian Kirk are likely to lead the 49ers’ pass catchers against the Falcons this week, and both are worth adding in deeper formats in case either emerges as a legit weapon while Evans (Achilles) and Samuel (hamstring) are sidelined.
