Giants coach John Harbaugh, asked about the running back room, said carries are “earned” and told his players to “do something” in their opportunities and more will come.

Tyrone Tracy appeared to do the most with his opportunities last week, scoring the game’s only two touchdowns. Najee Harris was bottled up and Cam Skattebo was soft benched while Devin Singletary led the team in snaps while they were in comeback mode for most of the second half. By the letter of what he’s offering here, Tracy is probably the player who should get the majority of the snaps against the Texans. In actuality, we have no idea what will happen here and this quote doesn’t really help us. “I don’t like (rotating backs) either,” Harbaugh said per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan after the game. “One of those guys needs to step up. Somebody needs to step up and be the back. And none of those guys have done that yet.” We suspect we’ll be diving beat writer opinions ahead of Sunday.

Skattebo looked rejuvenated after his benching, bulldozing a few Houston tacklers on his touchdown run that ended with a backflip. He did pull up late on a 42-yarder that could have sealed the game, and he seemed to be gesturing towards his hamstring on the sideline. We don’t have a full update on that as the Giants quickly closed out the game thereafter, but Skattebo will get a bye week to heal up as we try to figure out how this Giants backfield will sort itself out. Skattebo’s fantasy value looks to have bounced back to some real extent today.

Tracy had six carries for 15 yards and a touchdown before leaving, adding a two-yard catch on his only target. He was spotted in pads on the sideline, stretching his legs, so it looks like there’s a non-zero chance he returns.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Skattebo was benched for his fumbling issues last week. He did not touch the ball once, while Najee Harris, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary all got a few opportunities. The team then cut Harris a few days after Sunday’s loss. After a week in the doghouse, Skattebo appears to be back as the team’s top runner, though we still expect a committee approach from John Harbaugh. Rapoport even said that it’s unclear who will draw the start, so we aren’t sold on Skattebo as a safe fantasy option this week. At best, he’s a high-risk RB3.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Sigh. Three-player backfields are generally fantasy-unfriendly situations, and this one is no different. Skattebo is a capable dual-threat player who has seemingly been limited by the significant ankle injury he suffered last year. The Giants could get him more involved in the passing game, but Tracy can contribute there as well, muddying that opportunity. Singletary would not be a contributor for many NFL teams, but lucky him, he’s a New York Giant. Skattebo and Tracy are viable FLEX options, though both are likely touchdown-dependent.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Hughes makes clear that he thinks Skattebo’s time as the clear-cut lead back is over, recapping coach John Harbaugh’s offseason attempts to acquire a bellcow, while noting that Skattebo is currently in the doghouse. Hughes believes Skattebo is a nice complementary player who can function as a physical change-of-pace option. The biggest issue the Giants face in replacing him is cost. He thinks a player like Jonathan Taylor will cost a Day 2 pick, at least, and he is not sure Taylor is worth that, given the Giants’ long-term plans for the 2027 draft capital they’ve accrued via various personnel moves. Trading away Kayvon Thibodeaux is an option, but doing so is challenging with Brian Burns (knee) out for the year.
  • FA Running Back #23
The move comes a couple days after Harris criticized the New York coaching staff for its handling of the backfield touch distribution. “It’s hard to get into a rhythm with one or two plays...if you’re getting a play here and then get taken out for a series, there’s nothing you could do,” Harris said after the Giants’ Week 6 loss to the Saints. “I’ve never been through none of this before.” Harris had 31 rushes for 99 scoreless yards before getting the boot. With Harris gone, Cam Skattebo could get another chance to see increased playing time after being all but benched last week. Tyrone Tracy, who led the team in rushing attempts against New Orleans, could be the de facto lead back for now.
  • NYG Running Back #29
With Cam Skattebo facing a soft benching due to fumbling issues, Tracy saw the second-most running back snaps in a pass-happy game script. He opened scoring with a 17-yard catch-and-run in the first quarter and followed it up with a five-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter. The Giants backfield remains murky after Skattebo saw zero touches and no Giants back rushed for over 20 yards. Tracy is worth rostering as a potential FLEX play for Week 7 against the Texans.
  • NYG Running Back #23
Harris started the game for the Giants after it was reported Cam Skatteboo would be downgraded after his fumble issues. Fantasy managers that picked up Harris to start or stash will be immensely disappointed to see four carries and 11 snaps on the day. A pass-heavy game script played a role in that, but he totaled just two yards and has been a largely ineffective runner this season. Harris can remain off fantasy rosters heading into Week 7 against the Texans.
  • NYG Running Back #44
Before the game, it was widely reported that the Giants would start Najee Harris with Skattebo dealing with fumbling issues to start the season. This was indeed the case as Skattebo saw zero touches and just six snaps on the day, last among all four Giants running backs. After the game, head coach John Harbaugh insisted the team did not bench Skattebo, but it’s hard to see this as anything else. Fantasy managers will be hoping Skattebo will be out of the dog house after no Giants running backs surpassed 20 yards rushing against a poor Saints run defense. He is cautiously in the RB3 ranks until further notice.
  • NYG Running Back #23
Fowler was adding to a report from Jordan Raanan, who said Harris is “likely to have a larger role with Cam Skattebo downgraded but still part of the mix after the fumbles.” Skattebo has indeed struggled with fumbles, putting the ball on the ground four times this year. No running back has more fumbles, and Skattebo’s most recent blunder cost the Giants a shot at an overtime win versus the Commanders last week. They instead settled for a tie. Even if Skattebo winds up leading the team in carries this week, he was only valuable for fantasy managers because of his high-volume role. With that out the window, Skattebo is buried in the RB3 ranks for Week 6.

Matthew Stafford completed 23-of-29 attempts for 195 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the Rams’ Week 7 win against the Raiders.

It was a fairly clean game for Stafford against a Raiders defense that rarely pressures the passer and has proven vulnerable in the intermediate and deep areas of the field. Stafford picked apart the Vegas secondary in the first half, with heavy three tight end-set usage and a more run-heavy game plan than usual with Davante Adams (hamstring) sidelined. The Rams had 35 rushing attempts to 29 passes on the day. Stafford connected with Puka Nacua for one score and Davis Allen for two others. Though Stafford’s ceiling is going to be lower with Adams out, he profiles as a safe option in Week 8 against the Chargers. He now has six multi-touchdown games this season.

Ashton Jeanty had eight rushes for 15 yards in the Raiders’ Week 7 loss to the Rams, adding eight catches for 61 yards.

Among the least efficient rushers in the game, Jeanty again struggled to get anything going on the ground behind a middling Vegas offensive line. He did almost all of his damage through the air, turning eight targets into 61 yards and a late score in garbage time. He ran a route on 20 of the team’s 35 drop backs against the Rams and ranked second among Raiders pass catchers in targets. Mike Washington had six carries on the day. Jeanty, with at least six targets in six of his seven games this season, can maintain RB2 status as long as he’s catching passes out of the backfield. He gets the Jets in Week 8.

Tre Tucker caught 5-of-12 targets for 103 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders’ Week 7 loss to the Rams.

It was a quiet day for Tucker until the Raiders once again found themselves down by three scores in the fourth quarter. Kirk Cousins — as he did last week against Buffalo — let it rip and peppered Tucker with late downfield targets, one of them resulting in an impressive 37-yard touchdown. Tucker led all Vegas pass catchers with a dozen targets and dominated air yards as usual. Last week against the Bills, Tucker went for 97 yards and two scores on five receptions. The miserable Raiders defense should lead to plenty of runaway negative game script for the team’s offense in the coming weeks, and Tucker’s role as the team’s lone deep ball option gives him weekly upside. He’ll be a WR3 option in Week 8 against the Jets.

Blake Corum had 17 rushes for 93 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ Week 7 win against the Raiders, adding one catch for eight yards.

Corum had the lead in carries until the final drive of the game, when the Rams turned to Kyren Williams to seal the victory following a short-lived Raiders comeback. Corum’s fantasy day could have been much bigger if he hadn’t had two touchdowns called back on penalties along with another chunk gain. Despite running cold on luck, Corum’s role continued to grow even after Williams complained publicly about the backfield workload split last week. Williams logged 18 routes against the Raiders while Corum ran just nine. Look for the Rams to be more run heavy in the coming weeks with Davante Adams out indefinitely with a hamstring injury, putting Corum in play as a weekly flex. He gets the Chargers in Week 8.

Jordan Love completed 27-of-45 passes for 274 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Packers’ 20-17, Week 7 loss to the Lions.

Even with Josh Jacobs back in the mix, the Packers still struggled to get the ground game going. As a result, Love aired it out early and often, throwing a ridiculous 10 passes for 20-plus yards, but only three were completed. Love’s first touchdown pass came on a third-and-nine when he connected with Tucker Kraft for a 14-yard score, and in the third quarter, a short pass to Jacobs was turned upfield for a 25-yard touchdown after Jacobs tight-roped along the sideline to find pay dirt. Love nearly connected with Jacobs for another score late in the fourth quarter, but Jacobs was unable to complete the diving catch in the end zone for the go-ahead score. On the next play, Trey Smack had a 35-yard field goal blocked, which ultimately set the Lions up for the game-winning field goal on the ensuing drive. Love continues to play an aggressive style of football, airing it out to his speedsters in Matthew Golden and Christian Watson. He and the Packers now have a short turnaround to prepare for the Panthers in Week 8, where he will be on the QB1 radar.

Bo Nix completed 15-of-29 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos’ 30-16, Week 7 win over the Cardinals, adding seven carries for 74 yards.

Per usual, Nix had a quiet day through the air, which is doubly true when you realize 52 of his yards and his lone touchdown came on an RJ Harvey screen. Nix struggled to get his deep ball going, missing several long shots that would have padded out an otherwise lacking box score. On the other hand, fantasy managers won’t be complaining after seeing his rushing line, which was largely the result of a 62-yard rushing touchdown late in the first half. Denver sent nearly all of their eligible pass catchers to the right side of the field, opening up a running lane big enough for at least one 18-wheeler. Facing a much stingier Chiefs defense in Week 8, we don’t expect another elite fantasy showing from Nix next week. He will be on the QB1/2 border for the AFC West showdown.

Jared Goff completed 22-of-32 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions’ 20-17, Week 7 win over the Packers.

In a game that felt like it should have featured far more points, Goff and the Lions narrowly walked away with the win. He led an explosive opening drive that included a 28-yard pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown and a 24-yard pass to Jameson Williams, and ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Williams to put the Lions up 7-0 early. Goff would again connect with Williams for a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and narrowly missed linking up with him for a third touchdown were it not for Williams being forced out of the end zone on a catch when the Lions went for it on fourth-and-five from the Packers’ six-yard line. Goff did lose a fumble in this one on a botched snap exchange with his center, but it was an overall strong outing for the Lions’ signal-caller. Goff has yet to throw an interception this season and has now thrown for over 300 yards in three of his six games this season. He’ll be a fringe QB1/QB2 next week at home against the 6-0 Vikings.

RJ Harvey caught two passes for 54 yards in the Broncos’ Week 7 win over the Cardinals.

Harvey only ran the ball three times for six yards. Jonah Coleman, who was active for the first time since Week 2, ran nine times and also caught a pair of passes. Harvey’s role took a hit, but he made the most of his limited opportunities with a 52-yard screen in the third quarter. Sean Payton’s play-call schemed half of the Cardinals’ defense out of the play and Harvey blew by the other half on his way to the end zone. Despite the spike week for fantasy managers, Harvey’s declining role will have been tumlbing down the running back ranks for Week 8. He will be on the RB3/4 border versus Kansas City next week.

J.K. Dobbins rushed six times for 23 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos’ Week 7 win over the Cardinals.

Dobbins was the team’s preferred option at the goal line, allowing him to save a bust of a fantasy day with a one-yard score in the second half. He was initially stood up at the goal line but made it in the paint by driving his legs through the contact for six. Dobbins was held under 10 points even with the touchdown. Jonah Coleman returned this week and led the team in carries with nine. Harvey ran the ball just three times. This backfield is a messy, three-man committee and Dobbins doesn’t get to pad the stats with PPR-friendly targets. He will shuffle to the back of the RB3 ranks for his Week 8 date with the Chiefs.

Jaylen Waddle left Week 7’s game against the Cardinals with an apparent shoulder injury.

Up by 14, Sean Payton dialed up a trick play for Waddle, giving him a pitch as Waddle came across the formation. Waddle bobbled the ball and was clobbered by Josh Sweat. He writhed in pain while holding his left shoulder. Trainers came onto the field and eventually walked him into the locker room. With less than four minutes on the clock at the time of his departure, we don’t expect to see him again today. Waddle’s day ends with four catches for 48 yards on seven targets.
