Chase Brown rushed 13 times for 39 yards and a fumble in the Bengals’ Week 5 win over the Dolphins, adding 3 receptions for 21 yards.

Brown took a surprising backseat to Samaje Perine in the Bengals’ win over the Dolphins. He still out-snapped Perine 38-to-33, but a red zone fumble hurt his fantasy production while splitting backfield touches 50/50. There were a few snaps where Brown lined up as a receiver with Perine in the backfield; the Bengals used both backs heavily. Brown previously dominated all sorts of touches for the Bengals backfield, so this is a new development. Game script certainly played a factor but Brown’s ceiling as an RB1 may be considerably lessened if Perine’s usage sticks. He is a fantasy RB2 with a Week 7 matchup against the Ravens on the horizon after a Week 6 bye.
Simms: DAL players-only meeting ‘not a good sign’
Chris Simms and Mike Florio react to the Cowboys having players-only meetings to address the team's defense, with Simms saying that players-only meetings rarely change much in his experience.

Pitcher suggested that when they run the ball more from shotgun — as they did last week against the Dolphins — Perine’s a better fit for those kinds of plays. The Bengals spent a lot of time this offseason working on an under center run game to get Brown more explosives, but that has gone for naught early on in the season. We may indeed see more Perine in Cincinnati’s running game after they return from the bye week, lowering Brown into the RB2 range.

It was a big pass-catching day for Brown, who saw 11-of-54 total Bengals targets on the day. After Ja’Marr Chase (concussion) exited, Brown and Tee Higgins saw massive upticks in usage. Brown saw 57 backfield snaps, catching a series of checkdowns and wheel routes despite just 10 rushing yards on the day. He worked ahead of Samaje Perine on passing downs, a good sign for his fantasy production moving forward. We don’t expect Brown to consistently see this many targets but a high backfield share gives him a consistent fantasy floor. Brown is a fringe RB1 for Week 5 against the Dolphins.

Brown was effective with the opportunities he received, but the Bengals did all of their damage through the air in this one, as Joe Burrow and the company aimed to keep pace with a surprisingly explosive Steelers offense. As far as the Bengals’ backfield is concerned, Brown continues to be the only game in town. He handled 71.4 percent of the Bengals’ running back opportunities in this one but has only one touchdown to show for his efforts this season. He’ll be a fringe RB1/RB2 in next week’s game against the Jaguars.

He “added” three catches for two yards on five targets, getting absolutely exploded by Kamari Lassiter on one of them. He also had a 20-ish yard run called back for holding. Brown looked quick and able, but the Bengals ran just two plays inside the Texans red zone all game. He played on 42-of-60 snaps per PFF. Brown will be in the low-end RB1 ranks against the Steelers in Week 3.

It was neither an efficient nor prolific outing for the Bengals’ lead back, but he found the end zone and out-touched No. 2 Samaje Perine 21-8. It was a full “as expected” day in the Bengals’ backfield. Brown will remain in the RB10-14 range for Week 2 against the Texans. That’s a tough defensive matchup, albeit one the similarly offensive-minded Bills just handled with ease.

Dehner has been covering the Bengals’ intent to increase the number of plays run from under center all summer. Last season, “the Bengals ran from under center 120 times on early downs. The league average was 210.” Per Dehner, it has become clear “over the weeks that the under-center offense would not be going away.” The Bengals are committed to changing their ways in pursuit of more explosive gains. Starting RB Chase Brown is a locked-in RB1.
  • CIN Quarterback #9
Late in June, The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. reported that QB Joe Burrow had agreed to try out more under-center concepts in spring practices. The Bengals’ quarterback prefers to operate from shotgun, but the offense has struggled to generate explosive pass and run plays in recent seasons. Meanwhile, 2025 playoff teams notably thrived under center, prompting a potential schematic switch in Cincinnati this year. Dehner previously reported on Brown’s efficiency leaps when switching from shotgun to under center. Burrow and his wide receiver should, theoretically, receive an efficiency bump from the intended changes as well. This is exciting for fantasy football purposes.

Brown, according to Dehner, is “being used all over the formation,” similar to the way Ja’Marr Chase has been deployed in recent years. Brown lines up in the slot and runs a slant one play, then takes a jet sweep the next. He’s part of 20 personnel with two running backs, motions into the backfield, behind a fullback and almost any other spot imaginable.” The Bengals are preparing to use motion at a much higher rate than they have during the Joe Burrow era, especially when Burrow is under center. It’s led to some early camp struggles, per Dehner. “We all got to prepare a little bit more, at least I do, a lot for the motions and playing F and wherever they are putting me takes a little extra study time because I haven’t really done that before,” Brown said. “It’s cool they trust me doing that and believe in my skill set enough. It’s been fun.” Dehner said the team’s “pre-snap eye candy and under-center emphasis have helped establish a refreshed run game” ahead of the 2026 season. Brown’s pass game involvement should give him every chance to be a top-5 back in PPR formats.
  • CIN Running Back #30
Brown was reported to be discussing an extension with the Bengals in January, but nothing came of that. Dehner believes the $14.3 million franchise tag number for running backs “speaks the Bengals’ language as they continue to work on a potential longer deal for him.” Brown, entering his age-26 season, remains a fringe fantasy RB1 in Cincinnati’s wide-open offense. It doesn’t seem like there’s any danger of a holdout or anything of the sort here.

Dehner reports that the Bengals have rigorously practiced lining up under center in spring practices. He believes they will remain a shotgun-first team, but thinks they could improve on their 31st under-center ranking by more than 10 spots. Among the top-40 qualifiers from 2024-25, Brown averages 5.1 yards per carry (fourth) and a 12.3 percent explosive run play rate (third) on runs when QB Joe Burrow lines up under center. From shotgun formation, Brown averages 4.5 (24th) and 7.3 percent (22nd), respectively. Even a minimal increase in under-center snaps would benefit Brown. The Bengals believe TE Erick All’s (knee) return gives them the needed flexibility to do so. He is capable of motioning into the backfield as a fullback, and “setting the edge with vicious crack blocks and overall serving as a hammer in front of Brown in the run game.” Brown finished as the RB7 last year and is being drafted as the consensus RB10 in best ball. Beating that ADP seems plausible.

Titans head coach Robert Saleh said he had a “cool conversation” with Cam Ward.

Ward’s head, per Saleh, is in a “good place” ahead of the Titans’ Week 6 game against the Colts. Ward has been dreadful through five weeks, ranking 24th in EPA per drop back and 27th in drop back success rate. Only five quarterbacks have a lower adjusted yards per attempt than Ward this season. Daniel Jones and Tyson Bagent are the only QBs who average fewer fantasy points per drop back. Saleh has defended his second-year QB at every turn and does not seem close to benching him in favor of journeyman backup Mitchell Trubisky.

Caleb Williams (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday.

Technically, Williams was estimated as a full participant ahead of the Bears’ Week 6 game against the Falcons. We’ll see if Williams, who has missed the past three games, practices in full on Thursday. Either way he’s likely to be under center against the pass-funnel Atlanta defense in Week 6. He should be in all lineups if he’s active.

Quinshon Judkins (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.

Judkins suffered a potentially serious ankle injury in Week 5 and could miss Week 6 against the Ravens if he’s unable to practice in the next couple days. That could leave Jaleel McLaughlin as the Browns’ lead back against Baltimore. Dylan Sampson (knee) could also suit up if he’s able to practice after a four-week stint on IR.

Browns RB Dylan Sampson (knee) is designated to return and eligible to return to practice.

Sampson was placed on injured reserve in mid-September with a knee injury. His return could be an immediate factor in the Browns backfield with Quinshon Judkins likely out with an ankle injury. Sampson could compete for backfield touches with Jaleel McLaughlin in Week 6 against the Ravens if he’s active.

Michael Penix (ribs) will practice Wednesday.

“We’ll see how he’s feeling,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday morning, adding that Penix should be able to play through the injury. Even if it’s a limited practice session for Penix, it’s good news for his Week 6 availability following his Sunday night rib injury against the Ravens. Penix, operating under center at a much higher rate than last season, is among the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through Week 5. If Penix is out, Tua Tagovailoa would represent a major downgrade for all Atlanta pass catchers.

KC Concepcion (concussion) will practice Wednesday.

It’s a remarkable turn after Concepcion was knocked out cold on the field in Week 5 against the Jets. If Concepcion is able to practice in the coming days he should be active for Week 6 against the Ravens. The rookie leads the Cleveland offense with a 23 percent target per route rate, used primarily as a gadget player near the line of scrimmage. He would be a flex option in PPR formats if he suits up against Baltimore.

Baker Mayfield (thumb) did not practice Wednesday.

Mayfield is unlikely to suit up this week against the Steelers, leaving Jalon Daniels to get another start for Tampa. Daniel last week in a win over Dallas completed 19-of-25 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown, rushing for 23 yards. Daniels ranked tenth in EPA per drop back on the week and 11th in drop back success rate. His rushing makes Daniels a viable superflex option this week against the Steelers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Lamar Jackson (ankle) has a “realistic” shot to play in Week 6.

Jackson’s ankle injury, which has been described as neither high nor low, kept him sidelined in the Ravens’ win over the Falcons. It’s possible the Ravens will be cautious with Jackson and have Tyler Huntley start one more game in Week 6 against the Browns. Huntley against the Falcons threw for 201 yards and two scores. He was the seventh most accurate QB of the week. Jackson’s practice participation will be closely monitored over the next few days.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Ja’Kobi Lane (wrist) has “a shot” to play in Week 6.

Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said Lane, who injured his wrist in the season opener against the Colts, will return to practice this week and could suit up this weekend against the Browns. Lane had impressed Ravens coaches and beat writers through training camp and in Week 1 he caught one of three targets for 11 yards before exiting with the wrist injury. Lane’s return to the Baltimore lineup could limit snaps and routes for Rashod Bateman Devontez Walker. Lane should be picked up in 14-team leagues.

The Athletic’s Adam Kilgore reports Tyreek Hill could face NFL discipline under the league’s personal conduct policy.

A jury this week found Hill, 32, “liable for two of 10 counts related to domestic violence and awarded his estranged wife $500,000 in compensatory damages,” Kilgore reported. Hill, who has faced allegations of domestic violence in the past, was accused of several instances of harming his ex-wife. Hill denied the allegations. An NFL spokesperson told Kilgore that the league has been “monitoring developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.” That could mean Hill will face a suspension if he signs with a team in the coming weeks. Hill’s agent has reportedly reached out to the Chiefs — Hill’s former team — to gauge interest in the veteran wideout coming off a horrific knee injury in October 2025.
