Michael Mayer caught his lone target for two yards in the Raiders’ Week 5 loss to the Patriots.

Mayer and the rest of the Vegas pass catchers took a backseat to Brock Bowers, who had a team-leading ten targets for 110 yards and a touchdown before the Raiders pulled their starters in the fourth quarter of this blowout loss. Mayer was fresh off an 82-yard outing (on ten targets) against Kansas City. He should remain on waivers ahead of Week 6’s game against the Bills.

Mayer’s 10 targets were just one fewer than what Brock Bowers (11) saw on the day. Mayer made the most of his opportunities, racking up 82 yards—the second most in his career and saw four of his receptions come on the Raiders’ first four drives of the game. On the Raiders’ fourth drive, Mayer hauled in passes of two, seven, and 17 yards, with his longest catch setting up a 48-yard field goal just before halftime to put them up 13-10. We shouldn’t expect this level of production from Mayer on a weekly basis, but the Raiders’ underwhelming WR corps could pave the way for more opportunities for Mayer going forward after this solid outing. There’s a lot to like here, but Mayer will be a boom-or-bust TE2 next week against the Patriots until we see reliable target totals on a more consistent basis, while he shares the field with Brock Bowers.

Mayer scored with just under six minutes left in the first half. Coach Klint Kubiak sent Brock Bowers in motion, back and forth across the formation, behind the line of scrimmage, before Kirk Cousins executed the play-action fake. Mayer ran an out route from the slot and shook Saints defender Justin Reid on the cut before quickly hauling in the pass. Mayer’s other two catches both went for double-digit yardage gains. He will be a viable TE2 moving forward, with defenses focused on stopping Bowers.

Brock Bowers missed his second game of the year while recovering from a mensicus trim procedure, giving Mayer another opportunity to start. He led the Raiders in routes but failed to make a big impact in the box score, logging a measly 14 percent target share. Mayer is generally in the TE2 mix when Bowers is out, but even then he isn’t a particularly high-upside option. With Bowers expected to return next week, Mayer can be sent back to the waiver wire on the upcoming waivers run.
  • LV Tight End #87
Mayer was seemingly set for a sizable workload, going 3-of-3 for 21 yards on the Raiders’ first drive. He caught his fourth pass on the second drive, which was punched out and recovered by the Dolphins, but the play was overturned. For his part, Mayer looked good on short in-breakers and out routes, and his six receptions tie for a team-high. The Raiders simply got up to a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter and controlled the game thereafter, leaving the passing offense to take a backseat role to the Raiders’ ground game. Mayer can be started as a TE1 again next week against the Chargers.
  • LV Tight End #87
The deal was first reported by NFL Insider Ian Rapoport. Mayer’s deal includes $30 million guaranteed and his $15 million average annual value is third among tight ends. The Raiders selected Mayer in the second-round (35th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. He had 300 yards as a rookie and the Raiders drafted Brock Bowers 13th overall the following year. Mayer is firmly on the fantasy radar for Week 1 against the Dolphins with Bowers (knee) sidelined, but his value is unstable as the Raiders’ second tight end.
  • LV Tight End #89
Earlier today, Raiders coach Klint Kubiak said he was initially optimistic that Bowers could play in Week 1, even after undergoing a recent meniscus trim, which is surprising. Kubiak, however, declined to discuss an updated return timeline for his star tight end. We do not yet know when he is expected back. In the meantime, Michael Mayer is a TE1 this week.
  • LV Tight End #87
Mayer, 25, immediately vaults into the TE1 tier, especially with a matchup against the Dolphins’ defense upcoming in Week 1. Mayer banked two top-five finishes last season, notably catching 9-of-10 targets for 89 yards in Week 17 with Bowers on injured reserve.

Raiders No. 2 TE Michael Mayer should be added wherever available. On the plus side, this does not appear to be a long-term absence, but missing Bowers for a couple of games is obviously concerning. According to Schefter, Bowers “got banged up ‘a little in camp’ and the injury was diagnosed last week.” With any luck, fantasy managers can expect to get their TE1 back for the Raiders’ Week 3 game against the Saints. Mayer is a TE1 in the meantime.

Someone has to catch passes here, and the Raiders don’t have a single receiver who has cracked 700 yards in an NFL season. Both GM John Spytek and Kubiak have touted the idea of playing in bigger personnel. It’s certainly possible that Mayer gets more of a role in 2026, but with Brock Bowers ahead of him in the pecking order, Mayer probably belongs in the low-end TE2 pecking order until we see a firm role.
  • LV Tight End #87
Coming off a career day (nine catches, 89 yards) in Week 17, Mayer was limited to a couple grabs in a low-octane game against the Chiefs. Mayer finishes 2025 with 32 catches for 281 yards and a touchdown as the Raiders’ distant No. 2 tight end behind Brock Bowers. He proved viable as a fantasy starter when Bowers was out, but the Raiders proved unable to feed multiple tight ends. Mayer, with 82 receptions and 767 yards over 37 NFL games, will return to Vegas for his fourth season, and could get an extension if the Raiders plan on using him more in 2026.

NFL on Prime’s James Palmer reports that returning in Week 8 against the Chiefs is more likely for Pat Surtain (ankle) than in Week 7 against the Cardinals.

Palmer also clarified that Surtain did not suffer a non-contact injury, as has been reported previously. Surtain apparently injured his ankle two plays before he exited the Broncos’ Week 5 game against the 49ers. The Broncos might be able to get by without Surtain next week, but getting him back before facing Patrick Mahomes would be huge.

Cam Jurgens (concussion) was limited on Thursday.

Jurgens still has a chance to play, but we had hoped to see him upgrade to full participation. Ravens EDGE Mike Green (hamstring) was added to the injury report today as a limited participant. Ravens OG Andrew Vorhees (foot) joins him in the limited column. Ravens RT Roger Rosengarten (knee), LT Ronnie Stanley (rest/toe/ankle) and CB Marlon Humphrey (hamstring/calf) upgraded to full participation. Ravens OG John Simpson (groin) downgraded to a DNP.

Rashee Rice (hamstring) did not practice on Thursday.

Rice strained his hamstring in Week 4. Although Chiefs coach Andy Reid initially said Rice only “tweaked” it, The Athletic’s Mike Silver reported a few hours later that Rice could be out for several weeks. The fact that Rice remains sidelined for the first two practices following his team’s Week 5 bye is a bad sign. He is firmly on the wrong side of questionable for Week 6 against the Chargers. If he can get in a limited session tomorrow, that could put him on track to play in Week 7 against the Seahawks.

Rashod Bateman (shoulder) did not practice on Thursday.

Bateman played through the shoulder injury last week. He was limited yesterday, but coach Jesse Minter said he wasn’t worried. Downgrading to a DNP is not a good sign. Meanwhile, Ja’Kobi Lane (wrist) is practicing fully this week and could hop right into WR2 duties for the Ravens.

Tytus Howard (knee) was limited in Thursday’s practice.

It’s good progress after he had a Wednesday DNP. Howard should have a real chance at playing on Sunday as long as his Friday status stays neutral or trends positively.

Zay Flowers (toe) was added to the injury report on Thursday.

Flowers played through a foot injury last week, catching 8-of-9 targets for 53 yards and rushing once for 13 yards. This injury could be related, but we really don’t know. Flowers’ productivity took a hit with Tyler Huntley running the offense last week. Huntley is currently in line to start again, though Lamar Jackson’s (ankle) status is still up in the air. If the toe injury limits Flowers, that further complicates things, but he still must be started if active. Hopefully, he practices tomorrow.

Dylan Sampson (knee) was limited in Thursday’s practice.

This is at least some positive momentum towards being activated and helping the Browns out on Sunday, though even if Sampson was activated he’d likely be in a committee. We’ll see what Friday brings, but unless it’s a full session, we’d be surprised if Sampson was more than a sketchy questionable for Week 6.

KC Concepcion (concussion) was limited in Thursday’s practice.

He’s still in concussion protocol, but it looks like he’ll have at least some chance of clearing before Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Concepcion would struggle to be more than a FLEX option here even if healthy, so fantasy managers should probably look at alternatives this week.

Denzel Boston (foot) was limited in Thursday’s practice.

Of the (many) Browns in real danger of missing this week’s game against the Ravens, Boston seems to be in the best shape of actually playing. Still, it is two limited sessions in two tries and we wouldn’t be surprised if he wound up with a questionable tag on Friday.

Lamar Jackson (ankle) did not practice on Thursday.

Jackson still has a chance to face the Browns this week, albeit a very small one. Backup Tyler Huntley will likely be under center for the second week in a row, although coach Jesse Minter said last week that Jackson doesn’t have to practice “much” before being cleared to play. Huntley is a viable QB2 if he gets the start.
