Watson regresses for 8 sacks, 4.7 YPA, 4 fumbles

Deshaun Watson completed 15-of-33 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown in the Browns’ 17-12, Week 5 loss to the Jets, adding six rushes for 40 yards.

Watson also fumbled four times in rainy New Jersey conditions, somehow losing only one. Rather nonsensically drawing some “he’s back” chatter of late, Watson was indeed back this week, but just to the miserable form he’s displayed for nearly his entire Browns tenure. Alibis abounded — the weather, losing KC Concepcion to an early concussion — but Watson just wasn’t spinning a good ball, with the rather large exception of his 29-yard touchdown strike to Denzel Boston down the left sideline in the fourth quarter. That was a single-coverage thing of beauty. But other than that, Watson’s ball was fluttering and he was not making good decisions. That included on the Browns’ final play from scrimmage, a 4th-and-11 from their own 19 where Watson bafflingly did not attempt a throw, instead pulling the ball down and losing a fumble as he ambled near the sideline. Terrible. Although this will likely be an outlier performance in terms of its ineffectiveness, today was a reminder that Watson is never going to reclaim his long-ago Texans form. That should include for Week 6 against the Ravens, where Watson will struggle for superflex relevance.
Simms: DAL players-only meeting ‘not a good sign’
Chris Simms and Mike Florio react to the Cowboys having players-only meetings to address the team's defense, with Simms saying that players-only meetings rarely change much in his experience.

Watson made very few mistakes through the air against a solid Pittsburgh defense, although a third quarter fumble on a scramble attempt and a fourth quarter interception on tipped pass at the line of scrimmage allowed the Steelers the runway to make the game interesting late. Watson also badly missed a wide open Harold Fannin on a third down play that would have allowed the Browns to ice the game, instead giving the ball back to Aaron Rodgers with under four minutes to play while up eight points. Rodgers would work his late-game magic to knot the game at 24 before Watson drove the Browns into field goal range to set up the go-ahead kick with 10 seconds on the clock. Watson had a 20-yard carry wiped from his ledger due to penalty that would have padded his counting stats further. The two turnovers notwithstanding, Watson played a largely clean game that saw the Browns improve to 3-1, currently alone atop the AFC North, pending the outcomes of the Ravens and Bengals games Sunday. The Browns turn the page to a Week 5 meeting with the Jets, where Watson will remain a surprising high-end QB2 in fantasy circles.
  • CLE Quarterback #4
Per Fowler, sources around the league say Watson could get six total starts this year. The bar is low in Cleveland. Watson has not yet thrown for 240 yards in a game and has just five passing touchdowns this year. He is a QB2 against the Steelers tonight.
  • CLE Quarterback #4
The multi-score start was Watson’s second straight, though his yards per attempt fell precipitously for the second consecutive week. He’s now gone from 9.3 YPA in Week 1 to 7.9 to 4.8. Absolutely everything was underneath this afternoon, though we suppose the effort did come in a win. Watson found Harold Fannin for seven catches and a pair of scores after hitting the tight end seven total times between Weeks 1 and 2. The flip side was that Watson had just one completion longer than 20 yards, a 28-yard strike to Denzel Boston. Watson also missed a snap late after taking a big hit, but ended up returning ahead of what proved to be the game-winning field goal. Watson hasn’t been quite as bad as feared, but he’s hardly silencing the critics, including Browns fans who occasionally booed Sunday. The Steelers will be a tough short-week matchup this Thursday. Watson won’t be in the superflex mix for that one.

Watson was far more accurate than he was in Week 1’s meltdown loss to the Jaguars. He was 6.5 percent over his expected completion rate and once again hit rookie WR Denzel Boston for a long touchdown. Watson navigated the pocket well and was passably accurate on short-area throws (his 3.6 aDOT is as low as it gets for a full game’s work). His Week 2 play all but guarantees he’ll hang on to the Browns’ starting QB gig for at least a few more weeks before Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel get another shot under center. Watson will have superflex appeal in Week 3 against a gettable Carolina defense.
  • CLE Quarterback #2
Schefter said it “feels like Shedeur’s time is coming” if Watson bombs in the Browns’ Week 2 matchup with the Bucs following his Week 1 collapse against Jacksonville. Sanders, in that scenario, would be under center for the Browns’ home opener against the Panthers in Week 3. Sanders, who is slightly more accurate than Watson in the short and intermediate areas, would be an upgrade for Harold Fannin and KC Concepcion. He would likely be a downgrade for downfield air yards eater Denzel Boston.

The Browns open the year with a two-game road trip before returning to Cleveland for their home opener next week. Watson was a disaster in Week 1, turning the ball over twice while throwing for 205 yards and one score. Another showing like that versus the Bucs this week and he could be sent to the bench. Shedeur Sanders would then draw the start against Carolina in Week 3. It’s unlikely the Browns offense turns things around under Sanders, but things truly cannot get worse than they are right now.

Monken had been a little more evasive on the issue in his post-game interview after Week 1’s shellacking. It appears the Browns would like to touch the hot stove at least one more time against the Buccaneers. Expectations for all Browns pass-catchers and runners can be lowered even against a middling Bucs defense. Monken added “there were some really good things on film.”
  • CLE Quarterback #4
Watson added six carries for 38 yards on the ground. The Browns had a lethargic offense for the most part in Week 1, plagued by several delay-of-games and a variety of other penalties. The box score reads just one turnover for Watson, but there were many other opportunities. His interception occurred in Jaguars territory on the Browns’ first drive of the game. Watson then threw an interception that was dropped on the second drive, and fumbled twice; one was recovered by the Browns and he was just barely ruled down on the second. The Browns were finally able to score a touchdown on a 46-yard throw from Watson to rookie Denzel Boston with the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. The Browns offense with Watson at the helm is ultimately turnover-prone and lethargic but has room for fantasy production in negative game script situations. Watson is a fantasy QB3 heading into Week 2 against the Buccaneers.

Monken has stressed explosive plays as an important part of the Cleveland offense headed into the 2026 regular season. “Obviously having explosive players helps that,” Monken said. “Being able to scheme it up against certain looks and then being able to execute because your protection has to hold up when you get those opportunities. I’m confident in Deshaun and our ability to push the ball down the field, otherwise we wouldn’t be starting him.” That confidence might be misplaced considering Watson completed just 1-of-6 attempts for 20 yards and an interception on downfield passes in the preseason and was among the league’s worst deep ball passers in 2024, when he threw downfield on a career-low 27 percent of his attempts. Once an elite deep ball thrower, Watson will look to regain form coming off two torn Achilles, entering his age-30 season. Perhaps rookie WR Denzel Boston will be a boon for Watson’s downfield game in 2026.

This is coming from multiple reports, per Schultz. We’ll eventually get word from head coach Todd Monken on the decision, but it sounds like Watson, who was the favorite to win the battle entering training camp, will get the first crack at the starting job. Watson completed 16-of-27 passes for no touchdowns and one interception in his two preseason appearances, and struggled in last week’s outing against the Bills while playing with backups. Despite being booed off the field after a disappointing performance in front of a home crowd, the 30-year-old vet, who is in the final year of a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract, will get the chance to show he can lead the Browns in 2026. Watson shouldn’t be viewed as anything more than a low-end QB2 for fantasy purposes, but he has some exciting offensive weapons to throw to in Denzel Boston, KC Concepcion, and Harold Fannin.

Titans head coach Robert Saleh said he had a “cool conversation” with Cam Ward.

Ward’s head, per Saleh, is in a “good place” ahead of the Titans’ Week 6 game against the Colts. Ward has been dreadful through five weeks, ranking 24th in EPA per drop back and 27th in drop back success rate. Only five quarterbacks have a lower adjusted yards per attempt than Ward this season. Daniel Jones and Tyson Bagent are the only QBs who average fewer fantasy points per drop back. Saleh has defended his second-year QB at every turn and does not seem close to benching him in favor of journeyman backup Mitchell Trubisky.

Caleb Williams (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday.

Technically, Williams was estimated as a full participant ahead of the Bears’ Week 6 game against the Falcons. We’ll see if Williams, who has missed the past three games, practices in full on Thursday. Either way he’s likely to be under center against the pass-funnel Atlanta defense in Week 6. He should be in all lineups if he’s active.

Quinshon Judkins (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.

Judkins suffered a potentially serious ankle injury in Week 5 and could miss Week 6 against the Ravens if he’s unable to practice in the next couple days. That could leave Jaleel McLaughlin as the Browns’ lead back against Baltimore. Dylan Sampson (knee) could also suit up if he’s able to practice after a four-week stint on IR.

Browns RB Dylan Sampson (knee) is designated to return and eligible to return to practice.

Sampson was placed on injured reserve in mid-September with a knee injury. His return could be an immediate factor in the Browns backfield with Quinshon Judkins likely out with an ankle injury. Sampson could compete for backfield touches with Jaleel McLaughlin in Week 6 against the Ravens if he’s active.

Michael Penix (ribs) will practice Wednesday.

“We’ll see how he’s feeling,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday morning, adding that Penix should be able to play through the injury. Even if it’s a limited practice session for Penix, it’s good news for his Week 6 availability following his Sunday night rib injury against the Ravens. Penix, operating under center at a much higher rate than last season, is among the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through Week 5. If Penix is out, Tua Tagovailoa would represent a major downgrade for all Atlanta pass catchers.

KC Concepcion (concussion) will practice Wednesday.

It’s a remarkable turn after Concepcion was knocked out cold on the field in Week 5 against the Jets. If Concepcion is able to practice in the coming days he should be active for Week 6 against the Ravens. The rookie leads the Cleveland offense with a 23 percent target per route rate, used primarily as a gadget player near the line of scrimmage. He would be a flex option in PPR formats if he suits up against Baltimore.

Baker Mayfield (thumb) did not practice Wednesday.

Mayfield is unlikely to suit up this week against the Steelers, leaving Jalon Daniels to get another start for Tampa. Daniel last week in a win over Dallas completed 19-of-25 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown, rushing for 23 yards. Daniels ranked tenth in EPA per drop back on the week and 11th in drop back success rate. His rushing makes Daniels a viable superflex option this week against the Steelers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Lamar Jackson (ankle) has a “realistic” shot to play in Week 6.

Jackson’s ankle injury, which has been described as neither high nor low, kept him sidelined in the Ravens’ win over the Falcons. It’s possible the Ravens will be cautious with Jackson and have Tyler Huntley start one more game in Week 6 against the Browns. Huntley against the Falcons threw for 201 yards and two scores. He was the seventh most accurate QB of the week. Jackson’s practice participation will be closely monitored over the next few days.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Ja’Kobi Lane (wrist) has “a shot” to play in Week 6.

Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said Lane, who injured his wrist in the season opener against the Colts, will return to practice this week and could suit up this weekend against the Browns. Lane had impressed Ravens coaches and beat writers through training camp and in Week 1 he caught one of three targets for 11 yards before exiting with the wrist injury. Lane’s return to the Baltimore lineup could limit snaps and routes for Rashod Bateman Devontez Walker. Lane should be picked up in 14-team leagues.

The Athletic’s Adam Kilgore reports Tyreek Hill could face NFL discipline under the league’s personal conduct policy.

A jury this week found Hill, 32, “liable for two of 10 counts related to domestic violence and awarded his estranged wife $500,000 in compensatory damages,” Kilgore reported. Hill, who has faced allegations of domestic violence in the past, was accused of several instances of harming his ex-wife. Hill denied the allegations. An NFL spokesperson told Kilgore that the league has been “monitoring developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.” That could mean Hill will face a suspension if he signs with a team in the coming weeks. Hill’s agent has reportedly reached out to the Chiefs — Hill’s former team — to gauge interest in the veteran wideout coming off a horrific knee injury in October 2025.
