Shipley: BTJ could make long-term sense for WAS

Sports Illustrated’s John Shipley believes it could make long-term sense for the Commanders to acquire Brian Thomas, Jr.

Shipley mentions the Commanders and Rams as wideout-desperate teams who might be interested in trading for Thomas before the NFL’s trade deadline. The Jaguars have apparently soured on the one-time burgeoning star in recent weeks; against the Texans in Week 6, Thomas ran a pass route on just 28 percent of the Jags’ drop backs and saw two targets. The Commanders, meanwhile, lost Terry McLaurin to a potentially long-term knee injury on Monday night. Thomas, per Shipley, “is not a trade that would make a ton of sense for a Commanders team that might be losing a ton of games and needs their picks to rebuild ... but it would make sense for a general manager who needs to keep his job to give his quarterback a familiar and talented target. Daniels was Thomas’ quarterback during their final seasons at LSU, and the connection between the two could go a long-way toward solving some of Washington’s long-term issues at the wide receiver position.” BTJ’s fantasy prospects would get a big boost if he were to land in Washington in the coming weeks.

“I bet it, I know it. We’re gonna continue to support him, throw our arm around him and continue to do what we gotta do to make plays on Sunday. We gotta continue to put him in the best position to do so. BT works at it. He cares about this, he cares about winning and losing, he cares about his team. We all wanna see guys have success individually, but I’m excited about attacking this week with BT,” Coen continued. We’ll believe it when we see it, but at least it sounds like an endorsement that Thomas will remain in the playbook to some extent in Week 8. Fantasy managers that aren’t under duress probably shouldn’t tempt fate by putting Thomas, who did not catch a pass in two weeks in England, in lineups.

Schefter didn’t directly cite any sources, but the dots are extremely easy to connect. Thomas Jr. has been the subject of trade rumors for the past year and his role has all but disappeared this season. He hasn’t caught a pass since Week 4 and was benched in the second half of the team’s Week 6 loss to Houston. At this point, a trade is seemingly in the best interest of both parties. Expect the market for Thomas Jr. to heat up ahead of the November 10th deadline.

Appearing on ESPN Saturday morning, Fowler, citing Thomas’ zero catches over the last two weeks, said something has to give in this situation. According to several teams the NFL Insider talked to, Thomas could be traded over the next few weeks. Fowler listed the Chiefs and Steelers as potentially interested teams and was emphatic that there will be suitors for Thomas. If you have Thomas in fantasy, it’s hard to imagine his value getting worse with a change of scenery. The Jaguars would appear content to roll with Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers and Travis Hunter as their top receivers in the event of a Thomas trade.

It’s another rough blow for Washington’s No. 1 wideout, who will now have missed most of the last two seasons with injuries with the book closed on a 15-catch, 230-yard 2026 season in just five games. Entering his age-32 season in 2027, McLaurin will be a release or restructure candidate with a $34 million cap hit. The Commanders could save $16 million by releasing him without getting into post-June 1 antics. In the short term fantasy calculus, Stefon Diggs will slide in as Washington’s No. 1 receiver and Chig Okonkwo will also get a boost. Antonio Williams figures to see more snaps going forward as well.

Washington head coach Dan Quinn said after the team’s Monday night loss to the 49ers that there was “fear” McLaurin could be lost for the long-term after going down with a non-contact injury and was carted to the locker room. McLaurin has functioned as the team’s lone downfield threat for much of the season, and could be replaced with Treylon Burks, who on Monday night caught four balls for 66 yards before sustaining a late-game injury. Antonio Williams and Dyami Brown could also see an increase in routes and targets if McLaurin is sidelined for a while. Look for Chig Okonkwo to see an uptick in targets too. Okonkwo had seven grabs for 69 yards against the Niners.
  • WAS Quarterback #5
The Commanders gained just 90 yards of total offense and ran just 17 offensive plays in the first half, taking a 20-3 deficit into the break. Two quick touchdown drives to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter had the team in position to pull off an improbable comeback but two critical errors from Daniels sank that effort. The first error occurred on fourth down in the red zone with just over two minutes to play, when the team was late to break the huddle and ended up taking their first timeout down by six. They would fail to convert but would get the ball back with no timeouts and 52 seconds left. Daniels then committed an intentional grounding penalty from the San Francisco 28 with 16 seconds left, which incurred a loss of down and a 10-second runoff on the clock. The game would end on the following play. That now makes consecutive contests with late-game clock mismanagement that cost the Commanders potential wins. Rumors continue to swirl about a potential coaching change as the Commanders limp into their bye at a 1-4-1 record.

The mechanism of the injury did not look promising, with the veteran receiver buckling to the turf in non-contact fashion. It’s a devastating development for the 31-year-old receiver in what was the first game since Week 1 where Jayden Daniels, McLaurin, and Stefon Diggs were healthy together. Expect further updates from the team as the game progresses, but it certainly appears as if McLaurin’s season could be in jeopardy. McLaurin caught his only target for 27 yards prior to departing. Rookie Antonio Williams and Treylon Burks are the most likely fill-ins for the remainder of the game, and, potentially, the season.

Coen benched Thomas for the entire second half after he had one drop and two non-catches in the first against Houston. It sure seems like the runway for Thomas is running out in Jacksonville. A potential trade is the only fantasy salvation coming for the third-year receiver as he looks buried here.

That’s three games with three or fewer targets and Thomas Jr. has put up back-to-back bagels in London, apparently distraught over the local cuisine. He absolutely does not have to be rostered in most fantasy leagues through Jacksonville’s Week 7 bye.
  • WAS Wide Receiver #17
The Commanders added a “rest” designation to McLaurin’s report, so fantasy managers should not be alarmed by today’s absence. The veteran wide receiver played through the injury last week and should be expected to do so again this week. McLaurin is a WR2 against the 49ers in Week 6’s Monday Night Football game.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said “there’s a chance” Micah Parsons (knee) practices next week.

When asked about Parsons’ chances of practicing next week, LaFleur said, “I sure hope so.” He followed that up with, “I’m saying there’s a chance.” Parsons opened the season on the PUP list after an ACL tear late last season. The Packers have a Thursday game for Week 8, leading to a mini-bye where Parsons’ door to practice is at least cracked open.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said the team is “still working through it” when asked if WR Matthew Golden (shoulder/foot) will play Week 8 against the Panthers.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky relayed LaFleur’s noncommittal response to questions on Golden’s status. LaFleur said the team hopes Golden plays, but the 23-year-old has been an estimated DNP for the first two practices of the week due to shoulder and foot injuries. With the Packers playing on a short week against the Panthers, Golden’s status will likely rely on the final practice report before a Week 8 Thursday showdown against Carolina.

    Cowboys waived Emari Demercado.

It’s not the first time they’ve done so this season, so we’re not exactly sure that Demercado is done here. However he was a healthy scratch last night and the Cowboys are looking at activating some players off IR, so it’s possible if Demercado stays it’ll be as part of the practice squad.

He was deemed the best of a huge tryout with Ronnie Bell, Xavier Guillory, Jack Plummer and James Proche. Jones will work as a depth piece in Arizona, and for all you know that hasn’t always been the case.

49ers acquired DeForest Buckner from the Colts for a 2027 fourth-round pick.

Buckner exits the Colts the same day Quenton Nelson does. It’s a coup for a 49ers defense that has lacked some oomph in one-on-one situations on the defensive line. Buckner, who was with the 49ers early in his career before being traded to the Colts for a first-round pick, will run it back with his original team. The Colts simply weren’t in a position to ask much for the 32-year-old, as they were capped at receiving only a fifth-round compensatory pick for him due to his age. The 49ers are generating a pretty nice playoff-ready defense assuming (as is always the question in San Francisco) it can there healthy.

Giants GM Joe Schoen, asked about the future of the team’s quarterback position said: “To have two young guys with Jaxson and J.J., both talented players, it’s a good position to be in.”

In other words, it wasn’t exactly an endorsement that Jaxson Dart is the franchise quarterback. Dart, out for the year with a meniscus repair, will enter the third year of his rookie contract as the likely favorite to start assuming Nine hasn’t just blossomed into a great quarterback overnight. But it sounds like the Giants are at least open to the idea that McCarthy could alter the calculus here.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports he expects Lamar Jackson (ankle) to play in Baltimore’s Week 8 game against Buffalo.

It’s Tuesday, so we’re only 10 more Lamar updates from getting to the weekend. Rapoport believes according to people he’s spoken with that Jackson will play, and he is “believed to be as close to 100 percent as he has been.” Rapoport also noted that the Ravens weren’t “shocked” that Jackson didn’t play in Week 7, but with a Sunday and a Thursday coming up, wanted him ready for Week 8 and Week 9 badly.

Matthew Golden (shoulder/foot) did not practice on Tuesday.

This does not have us optimistic that Golden will play on Thursday night. If he’s sidelined, Savion Williams will be a candidate for more work on offense and perhaps a worthwhile FLEX streamer, while Tucker Kraft will likely ascend to the No. 2 role.

Raiders activated WR Dont’e Thornton (hamstring) from injured reserve.

It was his last possible day to be reinstated in his 21-day window. The fact that Klint Kubiak spent much of Thornton’s 21-day window talking about how he had to go show us something makes us think Thornton will probably just be a depth piece for the time being. The Raiders waived Jonah Laulu to make room for Thornton.

Colts placed Cam Taylor-Britt (undisclosed) on injured reserve.

He’ll miss at least the next four games. Taylor-Britt has played just 91 snaps for the Colts this year after coming over as a Lou Anarumo reclamation project. He has one sack, 13 tackles, and two passes defensed so far this year.
