Kenny Gainwell (hip) questionable for Week 8

Kenny Gainwell (hip) is questionable for Tampa’s Week 8 game against Atlanta.

His absence would free up more work for Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker. Presumably Gainwell will play after logging a full practice on Friday. Either way, with an injury also nipping at him, he’s an unenviable FLEX option at best against the Falcons.
Hubbard remains a locked-in top-12 fantasy RB
Chuba Hubbard rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and added 38 yards on seven receptions against the Packers, reinforcing his status as a locked-in top-12 fantasy running back going forward.

Gainwell missed Wednesday’s session with the hip issue. He will likely be listed as limited today, but that still puts him on track to play in Week 8 against the Falcons. Gainwell racked up 14 carries in a blowout win over the Panthers last week, but that hasn’t been the norm for him. Gainwell is averaging 6.4 touches per game and has topped out at three receptions in a week. He is buried in the RB4 ranks for Week 8.

Gainwell suffered the hip injury while logging a season-high 14 rush attempts in Week 7. The Bucs blew out the Panthers and racked up 49 carries as a team. Bucky Irving would be in line for more work on passing downs if Gainwell is out for Week 8. Sean Tucker could also see an uptick in snaps, though his normal role has very little overlap with what Gainwell does. Per usual, Irving looks like a high-end RB2 this week.

Gainwell was not targeted in the passing game, but that’s because Baker Mayfield attempted only 11 throws. That in turn was due to the fact that Tampa road paved Carolina on the ground as the Panthers committed four turnovers. It’s why Gainwell rushed for a season-high 88 yards after never perviously reaching 20. He was still out-carried 24-14 by Bucky Irving, who found the end zone twice as Sean Tucker hit pay dirt once. We are sure this is a formula the Bucs would like to replicate moving forward, but it is not going to be doable most of the time. It does at least make Gainwell a slightly more realistic FLEX option heading into Week 8 against the Falcons.

There isn’t much to say here. Gainwell has topped out at five carries in a single game this year, and that came all the way back in Week 1. He hasn’t caught more than three passes in a game either, so even the PPR scam that he operated in Pittsburgh has been shut down. Gainwell isn’t in the fantasy conversation headed into Week 7 versus Carolina.
  • TB Running Back #1
Gainwell wasn’t awfully involved in the Bucs’ game plan, but he took the field for almost as many routes as Bucky Irving and cashed in with a 10-yard score in the second half. It was his first touchdown as a Buccaneer. Gainwell is still averaging just 5.3 touches per game, but this performance could earn him more work going forward, specifically on passing downs. He will be a low-end RB4 for Week 5 against the Cowboys.

The Buccaneers are 0-3, so if trailing game scripts aren’t the ideal setup for a receiving specialist, we aren’t sure what is. Robinson said he would like to get Gainwell more involved, but also added that Gainwell has to earn those reps by being more productive. Robinson said he also wants to get RB3 Sean Tucker more involved during the same presser. It sounds like this backfield still belongs to starting RB Bucky Irving, who is dealing with a glute injury, but changes are at least being considered.
  • TB Running Back #44
Robinson described Tucker as being “special with the ball in his hands,” and said that it’s on the coaching staff to find spots to mix him in. Whether this impacts starting RB Bucky Irving basically comes down to how and when — and if — the Buccaneers get Tucker involved. Taking a few snaps away from RB2 Kenneth Gainwell would be no big deal. Utilizing Tucker in the red zone would be consequential for Irving. Hopefully, Robinson provides more insight before his team’s Week 4 game against the Packers. Stay tuned.

Irving was spotted on the sideline for the majority of the fourth quarter. It’s possible that Irving just did something that irked Bowles rather than actually suffering an injury, but given how Irving’s injuries quickly manifested last season, we’re going to want to see that on the official injury report on Wednesday before we dial the status down to “unconcerned.” This news does seem to leave Kenny Gainwell as a lower-priority waiver claim.
  • TB Running Back #1
Gainwell was once again inefficient with his limited opportunities. He operated as the team’s lead back, however, when Bucky Irving exited with a lower body injury. If Irving misses any time, Gainwell would profile as a top-24 PPR option, even if he loses touches to Sean Tucker. Tampa could be without Baker Mayfield (thumb) for a while. That would dampen the prospects of everyone in the offense.
  • TB Running Back #1
Gainwell saw some pass-catching involvement once the Bucs fell behind Cleveland, but it was once again Bucky Irving who worked as Tampa’s clear No. 1 back, seeing 19 touches, including most of the early-down opportunities. Irving’s domination of the Bucs backfield through two weeks means Gainwell is nothing more than a bench stash in 12-team formats for now.

Cowboys activated S P.J. Locke (plantar fascia) from injured reserve.

Locke spent the previous five weeks on injured reserve with a plantar fascia issue and is expected to be active for the team’s Week 8 game against the Cardinals. He brings a veteran presence to a defense that struggled mightily to start the season as the Cowboys continue inching closer to full health.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Raiders are expected to activate WR Jack Bech (forearm) from injured reserve ahead of Week 8.

Bech has been on the shelf since fracturing his arm in Week 3, missing the minimum required four games due to the injury. He returns to a passing offense that has been heavily concentrated amongst Brock Bowers and Tre Tucker, unlikely to be a usable weekly fantasy asset. Fantasy managers can stash the youngster in hopes of a growing role moving forward.

TreVeyon Henderson (illness) was ruled out for Week 8 against the Dolphins.

Henderson first popped on the injury report with a missed practice Thursday before maintaining that status to end the week, ultimately unable to play through the ailment while being ruled out Saturday. Rhamondre Stevenson steps into a potential workhorse role against the downtrodden Dolphins, where he will be an upside RB2 in Week 8. Expect the team to elevate another back from their practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game to play behind Stevenson and Corey Kiner, the latter of whom is expected to serve as the primary change of pace option with Henderson out.

A.J. Brown (knee) was ruled out for Week 8 against the Dolphins.

This was always thought to be the case after Brown missed Thursday and Friday with a “flare up” of an existing knee injury, the same issue that ultimately saw the Rams back out of trade negotiations this offseason. Brown’s absence comes at a horrible time for a team already without Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs, leaving only DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism as healthy wide receivers on the active roster. Fantasy managers in a bind could consider taking a shot on upside through Williams’ downfield role against a Dolphins team bleeding explosive passing through the first seven weeks.

Bears RB Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) is out for Week 8 against the Seahawks.

No surprise here as Monangai hasn’t practiced since Week 4. He’s set to miss his fourth consecutive game against the Seahawks in Week 8. Roschon Johnson figures to continue to serve as the Bears’ RB2 with Monangai sidelined.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Daron Payne suffered a season-ending Jones fracture.

Payne suffered the injury during Friday’s practice. A previous report from Ian Rapport stated the 29-year-old defensive tackle suffered a significant foot injury and would be out for the foreseeable future. Payne will be placed on injured reserve as he’s set to miss the rest of the season. He recorded a sack, a forced fumble and 14 tackles in six games with the Commanders this year.

NBC 26 Northeast Wisconsin reports “newly released records show additional women contacted the Hobart/Lawrence (Wisconsin) Police Department to report alleged physical incidents involving Josh Jacobs.”

The Wisconsin television station received “heavily redacted” police reports on Friday evening, though they included allegations from three other women. There are multiple extremely disturbing allegations of physical violence. One alleged incident took place in January 2022. The accuser “contacted investigators in June after learning about the May investigation, telling police the allegations sounded similar to her prior experience with Jacobs.” She also said the incident had “never been reported to law enforcement, (and that she) contacted police when she believed her alleged experience with Jacobs could be relevant to the case.” The allegations highlight the folly of the NFL’s apparent wish that the situation would just go away. It has not, and now it is quite possible, if not likely, that Jacobs ends up suspended for the remainder of the 2026 season. Stay tuned.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports Micah Parsons (knee) is expected to practice next week.

If Parsons returns to practice next week, the Packers will have a 21-day window where he can practice before activating him to the 53-man roster. Pelissero also reported that Parsons’ most likely return date is in Week 11 against the Rams. Including the playoffs, Green Bay is 5-8 since Parsons tore his ACL last December.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports the Colts haven’t discussed benching QB Daniel Jones.

Jones received a vote of confidence from Colts HC Shane Steichen earlier this week and now there’s a report from prominent NFL Insider Pelissero that the organization hasn’t discussed benching him. While that’s all well and good, the Colts still seem like they’re in the early stages of a process that will likely end with benching Jones at some point this year. The fact that Pelissero mentioned Jones’ contract includes a $10.51 million injury guarantee for 2027 is an ominous sign. Once the 2-5 Colts are officially eliminated from playoff contention, Indianapolis won’t have much incentive to risk injury with the oft-injured Jones.

The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reports Giants HC John Harbaugh called Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk about trading for DT Jeffery Simmons.

With Giants GM Joe Schoen stonewalled, Harbaugh broke with traditional NFL trade-talk norms and called the Titans owner himself. Unfortunately for the Giants, the message was the same, that Simmons was off limits in trade talks. Previous reporting from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer stated that Bears GM Ryan Poles’ long-standing relationship with Titans GM Mike Borgonzi played a huge role in Simmons ending up in Chicago. Poles and Borgonzi first met in 2007 when Poles was a guard at Boston College and Borgonzi was a recruiting assistant.
