Mayfield completes 0 (zero) passes in Week 8 win

Baker Mayfield completed 0-of-3 passes for zero yards in the Bucs’ 16-0, Week 8 win over the Falcons.

You read that correctly. Mayfield did not complete a pass and the Bucs handily defeated Atlanta. Playing in a torrential downpour, Tampa Bay’s defense eviscerated Michael Penix and the Bucs simply took the air out of the ball for four quarters. Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell combined for 310 yards on 52 carries. There was simply no need for Mayfield to handle the football outside of transferring it from the center to a running back. Mayfield did have a long touchdown to Ted Hurst that was knocked out of the rookie’s hand. This is just the second time a team has completed zero passes in the Super Bowl era and the first such game in over 50 years. Needless to say, Mayfield’s numbers will rebound in Week 9 when he takes on the Bears. He will be in the QB2 mix for that contest.

Mayfield wore the protective glove during last week’s game to avoid further damage to the thumb he injured in Week 3. Mayfield attempted only 11 passes in his return against the Panthers last week, but that was all he needed in a game where the Buccaneers totaled over 250 yards on the ground. Hopefully the shedding of his protective glove is a sign that he’s no longer at risk of re-injury heading into Week 8’s game against the Falcons.

Making his first start since Week 3 but missing Emeka Egbuka, Mayfield got his first “quarterback win” of the season in a game where he had to attempt only 11 passes. Go figure. The Bucs road paved the Panthers on the ground — 49 carries for 258 yards — and continually took advantage of short fields set up by Panthers turnovers. This, in a game where Mayfield committed zero giveaways. It was the exact kind of day this offense needed, though there aren’t many going-forward takeaways for Mayfield seeing how little he had to throw. Mayfield will presumably be called on for more against the Falcons in Week 8, hopefully with Egbuka back in the fold. Mayfield is just a mid-range QB2 for the time being.

When last we left Mayfield, he was struggling mightily in Weeks 1-3. Predictably, UDFA Jalon Daniels was not any better in his stead. Mayfield returns to an undermanned skill corps, as Emeka Egbuka (foot, concussion) is out for Week 7. Mayfield is a shaky option in the QB16-18 range. Joining Egbuka on the shelf are OT Luke Goedeke, S Antoine Winfield, OG Billy Schrauth, DL DeMonte Capehart and CB Ayden Garnes.

Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles told reporters earlier today that Mayfield “looks like he’s ready to go” for this week’s game. Mayfield seemingly has solid odds of suiting up this week, but we must wait for an official ruling. Hopefully, that arrives tomorrow. If active, Mayfield will play with a protective plate on the back of his glove to help keep his recently dislocated thumb in place. He is a QB2 for the occasion, if active.

Mayfield was a full participant in practice all week and should be removed from the team’s final injury report when it’s released later in the day. Mayfield is expected to wear a protective glove on his throwing hand, which should prevent injury to the thumb he dislocated in Week 3, and will be on the QB2 radar in what is a must-win game for the 1-5 Buccaneers. Hopefully he can improve on a rough start to the season in which he threw for 615-2-2 in his first three games while completing 63.5 percent of his passes.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Mayfield has played through injuries regularly over the years. We expect him to be out there for the Buccaneers’ Week 7 game against the division rival Panthers. He is a QB2 for his first game back. A run-heavy game plan could be in the works as they ease him in. If his thumb really is good to go, though, this game could turn into a shootout. He practiced in full for the second time this week on Thursday, and told reporters that he will play with a protective plate on the back of his glove to help prevent re-injury.
  • TB Quarterback #6
Mayfield going down as a full participant is a bit of a surprise given that it’s his first time practicing in any capacity since Week 3. Todd Bowles told reporters earlier this week that the team was preparing for Jalon Daniels to start. Now it looks like Mayfield may be the favorite to draw the start versus Carolina. This is ultimately a rather ambiguous situation, likely by Bowles’ design. Fantasy managers should have a backup plan in place if they are counting on either of the Bucs’ quarterbacks this week.

Mayfield hasn’t played since dislocating his thumb in Week 3. As of late last week, he hadn’t even thrown a football since suffering the injury. Todd Bowles told reporters on Monday that he’s preparing for Jalon Daniels to start, but Mayfield’s return to practice puts things up in the air. His practice statuses over the next few days will be telling. For now, fantasy managers should still plan on seeing Daniels under center, but this is a situation to monitor throughout the week.

Bowles has already said that the team is preparing as if Jalon Daniels will start in Week 7, but the team will be evaluating Mayfield to see how he is progressing in his recovery from a dislocated thumb. Mayfield reportedly pushed to play last week after throwing on Monday, but his thumb swelled up, which factored into the decision to sit him in Week 6’s loss to the Steelers. Given Bowles’ comments about the team’s plans entering the week, it sounds like Mayfield is at risk of missing at least one more game, but we’ll see how his hand responds when he gets on the field on Wednesday.
  • TB Quarterback #10
Bowles said this week will be an important evaluation week for Baker Mayfield, who is still rehabbing a dislocated thumb that has sidelined him since Week 3. Daniels hasn’t been overly impressive in his three starts this season, throwing for 501 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions while also taking nine sacks. That said, he did manage to pull off a win over the Cowboys in Week 5 and had the Buccaneers in position to beat the Steelers in Week 6 before Pittsburgh erupted for 16 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. We’ll see how things unfold throughout the week, but it sounds like Mayfield is at least one week away from returning. Daniels would be on the fantasy radar as a low-end QB2 if he gets the start against Carolina.

Jakobi Meyers (hamstring/ankle) was listed as limited on Monday’s estimated practice report.

The veteran receiver played through both ailments in Week 8 but was limited to only 54 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in a blowout win. Fantasy managers will want to monitor his status in the coming days, with the expectation that he continues to play through the injuries against the Ravens on Thursday Night Football.

Chris Rodriguez (hand) was limited on Monday’s estimated practice report.

This appears to be a non-issue as the veteran change of pace back should be fine for Thursday Night Football against the Ravens. Of greater concern was the absence of lead back Bayshul Tuten, something fantasy managers of both players will want to monitor as Thursday draw nearer. Rodriguez would seemingly be in line for a featured role if Tuten is unable to play on a short week.

Bhayshul Tuten (ankle/foot) was listed as a “DNP” on Monday’s estimated practice report.

Tuten briefly left the team’s Week 8 win in the first quarter but returned to amass 159 total yards and two touchdowns against the overmatched Colts. Fantasy managers will want to track his status closely as the team makes a quick turn to face the Ravens on Thursday Night Football.

Justice Hill (groin) was listed as limited on Monday’s estimated practice report.

The fact he was listed as limited and not a “DNP” likely signals a more modest injury and we would expect Hill to suit up when the Ravens take on the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football in Week 9. Either way, fantasy managers likely have better options at the position.

Mark Andrews (hand) was listed as a full participant on Monday’s estimated injury report.

That keeps the veteran tight end on track to suit up in Week 9 against the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football. Andrews has struggled to return usable fantasy weeks throughout his age-31 season, with the team now down to their third, potentially fourth, quarterback for Thursday’s game. he can safely be left on fantasy benches on the short week.

Zach Charbonnet (knee) and Jadarian Price (chest) are active for Week 8 against the Bears.

Charbonnet makes his season debut after a suffering a torn ACL late in the 2025 season while Price returns from short-term injure reserve due to a chest injury. Emmanuel Wilson and George Holani had held down the backfield in the absence of the two top backs, leaving an uncertain situation regarding expected backfield utilization when the Seahawks take on the Bears in a marquee matchup. Inactive for the Seahawks are QB Drew Lock, LB Uchenna Nwosu, WR Rashid Shaheed, RB Velus Jones Jr., OT Charles Cross, G Beau Stephens, and NT Brandon Pili.

Bears declared RB Kyle Monangai, QB Case Keenum, DB Malik Muhammad, OL Jordan McFadden, DL Jayden Loving, and OL Jordan van den Berg inactive for Week 8 against the Seahawks.

No real surprises here after Monangai was ruled out for Week 8 on Saturday, leaving D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson to handle backfield duties in a difficult matchup against the Seahawks. The two had operated in a loosely split backfield before Week 7, during which Swift saw workhorse usage in a tight game against the Patriots. It would appear likely that Swift will once again see the bulk of the work considering the opponent, making him a surefire RB2 with RB1 upside to cap the Week 8 festivities.

Jesse Minter said the team is considering injured reserve for Tyler Loop (undisclosed).

Loop suffered an undisclosed injury in the Week 8 loss to the Bills, something that is reportedly serious enough to warrant injured reserve consideration. When asked if Jake Moody would be kicking on Thursday Night Football against the Jaguars, Minter replied with a simple, “At this point, yes.” The Ravens were dealt numerous injury issues in their loss to the Bills as they lost both Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, with third string rookie Joe Fagnano also emerging dinged up after taking numerous hard sacks.

Jesse Minter said Joe Fagnano (ankle) is “dealing with some things physically” but has a chance to start in Week 9.

Whelp, that isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for the rookie quarterback’s chances of starting under center for the Ravens when they host the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 9. The team lost both Lamar Jackson to a season-ending thumb injury and backup Tyler Huntley to a turf toe injury in their Week 8 loss to the Bills, now in desperate need of a viable quarterback option as they fight for their playoff lives. It is possible the team addresses the position through trade with just over a week until the trade deadline, although that is unlikely to help them on a short week. More to come in what quickly became a dire situation in Baltimore. Fagnano was officially listed as limited on the team’s estimated practice report Monday.

Jim Harbaugh said the team will open the 21-day practice window for David Njoku this week.

Njoku has been on the shelf since being placed on injured reserve ahead of Week 3, with the potential to return following five missed games plus the team’s Week 7 bye. The team will have 21 days to activate him from short-term injured reserve, meaning Njoku is not guaranteed to be activated in time for Week 9 against the Texans. Fantasy managers that have held Njoku through his time on injured reserve can continue patiently waiting for his return while those in shallower leagues can consider adding him from waivers before he is activated.
