Commanders re-signed QB Marcus Mariota to a one-year, $7 million contract.

He’ll remain the backup behind Jayden Daniels in Washington. Mariota runs enough to remain a stable backup and superflex QB2 when he is on the field. Things will change a bit in Washington in 2026 without Kliff Kingsbury, but Mariota is in a decent spot to find work behind Daniels and it’s a worthwhile investment for the Commanders.

The Athletic’s Nate Atkins reports Steston Bennett is getting the “first crack” with the ones when Matthew Stafford rests.

Atkins doesn’t seem impressed with Bennett (who has “fallen victim to a couple of greedy mistakes”) or Ty Simpson (“isn’t going downfield much”) early in camp and suggests that the unsigned Jimmy Garoppolo could just be a phone call away if Simpson isn’t able to win the QB2 job. We’ll see what happens, but Garoppolo lingering as a free agent could keep some upside injury runouts off the table for Simpson this year.
Why Texans can secure another 10-win season
The Houston Texans seek their fourth-straight 10-win season, and with stability on defense and belief in rebounding from playoff "indignity," Jay Croucher and Vaughn Dalzell are buyers.

The Athletic’s Jesse Newell reports the Chiefs are “eager” to test Patrick Mahomes’ (knee) limits at the start of training camp.

Mahomes is wearing a brace — he doesn’t seem particularly comfortable with it yet, per Newell — and he’s also still favoring the leg a bit. Neither of those are very surprising observations, but it says a lot that the Chiefs are trying to get a good gauge on where Mahomes is right away. Per Newell, Mahomes took a lot more under-center reps as well, which could signal an offensive shift for the unit towards something that’s better for Kenneth Walker.

Steelers placed CB Joey Porter (undisclosed) on the active/PUP list.

It’s unknown what the injury is here, as Porter was not mentioned in an injury rundown by GM Omar Khan earlier this morning. More information to come when it is available. Porter was a potential hold-in (as he was at OTAs) as he tries to work on a contract extension with the team.

Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez said he’d like to keep negotiations on a contract extension private and that he won’t be holding in.

“These are my guys,” Gonzalez said. “It’s hard to sit and just watch. I like to be out on the field. This is what I love to do. At the end of the day, I’ve got to get better for myself and for the team. I’m focused on being here at training camp right now, taking it day-by-day, and see where it goes.” Gonzalez has (per Robert Kraft) been offered a top of the market amount for a cornerback. We’ll see where this goes, but it’s great news for the Pats that Gonzalez isn’t holding in.

Bears GM Ryan Poles said Kyler Gordon has a calf injury and isn’t ready to practice yet.

“Obviously, he’s frustrated. We’re frustrated. Everybody here is putting there time and effort to getting him back,” Poles said. Gordon missed the offseason with what was an undisclosed soft tissue injury. We’ve now got the body part down, so all we’re missing is any expectation about when he’d be ready to come back.

Ladd McConkey (hamstring) said he’s “full go” for training camp.

McConkey suffered a hamstring sprain in offseason team activities but the expectation all along was the he’d be ready for camp. Elevating near the WR2/WR3 borderline in ADP, fantasy managers are anticipating a breakthrough year three after last season’s disappointment. A full camp with Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert should help.

Colts DT DeForest Buckner (neck) has been cleared to practice.

It’s great news for the Colts after Buckner had surgery on his neck late in the season. Buckner didn’t participate in any offseason activities. He’ll likely be brought along slowly, but this is terrific news for the odds of him suiting up for Week 1.

    Vikings signed T Brian O’Neill to a four-year, $96 million contract extension.

That average value puts O’Neill just behind Lane Johnson amongst right tackles. The Vikings had O’Neill skip most of the offseason activities but reportedly had “near-universal agreement” that they’d sign him to an extension so this comes as no surprise. O’Neill should be the right tackle of the short-term future in Minnesota.

Titans GM Mike Borgonzi said JC Latham is dealing with a pectoral strain and is day-to-day.

And aren’t we all? The Titans don’t seem too concerned about this injury and he’ll likely come off the active/PUP list in the near future.

Titans activated S Amani Hooker off the active/PUP list.

He spent roughly four days there, but he passed a physical today. The 28-year-old is expected to be a veteran presence for the Titans’ secondary this year as they break in second-year player Kevin Winston Jr. alongside him.
