Charlie Danielson outlasted Tony Finau in a 2-for-1 playoff at Springfield Country Club during today’s U.S. Open sectional qualifier, carding rounds of 69-70=139, securing one of four spots from the Springfield, Ohio, location.
Finau made his way through this same sectional last year en route to his U.S. Open debut, but fell one shy this time around. The University of Illinois product, Danielson, has one PGA TOUR start under his belt, a T72 at this year’s Northern Trust Open. Four clear of this duo was Nick Hardy (70-64), Kyle Mueller (68-67), and Patrick Wilkes-Krier (66-69). Hardy and Danielson are teammates at Illinois, and this is the second straight year Hardy has qualified out of Springfield, Ohio. It will be his second career start on the PGA TOUR, as well. Kyle Mueller just ended his sophomore year at the University of Michigan and will now make his PGA TOUR debut as he preps for Oakmont Country Club. Patrick Wilkes-Krier is an instructor at the Kendall Academy in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Other than Finau, some notables that failed to qualify include: 140--Brian Stuard...141--Zac Blair...143--Troy Merritt...148--Jamie Sadlowski...WD--Matt Jones;Nathan Holman.
