Peter Senior was a last-minute entrant for his home Australian PGA Championship at Royal Pines but his decision to take part paid off with an opening bogey-free 5-under-par 33-34=67 leaving him just one shot back from leaders Jordan Zunic and Adam Bland.
That’s good enough for T3 alongside Sergio Garcia and Marc Leishman. Senior, who officially retired last November, said: “I was on the 14th hole at Killara Golf Club in Sydney and we had 15 minutes before the entries closed and I rang Gavin (Kirkman, PGA of Australia CEO) and said, ‘Mate, I’m hitting it all right’.” Senior, now 58, piped 17 greens in regulation in his opening lap and converted chances at 6, 8, 9, 13 and 15. Having won the Australian Masters as a 56-year-old two years ago, let’s not rule him out!
