Playing this season on a Career Money Exemption, World No. 514 Luke Donald twirled a 4-under-par 34-33=67 in the third round of the Palmetto Championship at Congaree for a 54-hole tally of 6-under 207, up 13 spots to T7 with play currently suspended for inclement weather. UPDATE: Donald closed with 2-over 73 (3 birdies, 5 bogeys), falling 23 places to T31 on 4-under 280 (71-69-67-73).
The Englishman owns 79 top 10s in 378 events, but a T9 at the 2019 Valspar is his only one in his past 58 starts. Prior to that, it was solo 2nd, a then-fifth-runner-up in nearby Hilton Head at the 2017 RBC Heritage as a 36-hole co-leader. This is the South Florida resident’s first time in the top 10 at the three-quarter mark since T3 at last season’s Honda 24 starts ago, where he ultimately finished T11 (70-66-71-72). On 12 (of 14) fairways and 16 greens in regulation, he lost 0.079 strokes off-the-tee but gained 2.571 approaching. The 43-year-old, who arrived off a season-best T13 four weeks ago at the Byron Nelson (65-73-66-67), camouflaged one bogey with five circles, each from inside of 11 feet, gaining 0.936 with the flat stick.
