Out of the seventh-to-last threesome, World No. 83 Matt Jones painted a day-tying-low 6-under 31-35=66 in R4 of the Valero Texas Open for a 72-hole tally of 11-under 277, up 19 places to a season-best T2, two back of winner J.J. Spaun (69).
The 41-year-old, who celebrates his birthday this month (April 19th), was one of 11 to make the cut (T62) on the number (68-75), and then boat-raced the weekend in 68-66. This was his 11th VTO, ninth cash and first top 10, his second top 10 of the season in 15 events, joining a solo 3rd at the Sentry TOC back in January, and a second career runner-up in 359 events, first since a T2 at the Greenbrier in July 2013 (221 starts ago). For the week, the Aussie totaled 21 birdies, 14 of those on the weekend, versus eight bogeys and one double, and ranked Top 25 in all strokes gained metrics, including 10th Tee-to-Green (7.399) and 25th in Putting (2.344). After finishing T26 at last year’s Masters in April, in his second appearance, he is not qualfied for this coming week’s edition. See link below to post-round comments.
