The 2014 NCAA individual champ didn’t have a career that instantly took off like he’d hope but the talent is still there. Spending his time on the Web.com Tour last year, he went 11-for-21 with nothing better than T20. Today he was nearly flawless, circling six birdies and an eagle to offset a lone bogey. Matching Wilson at the top was Calum Hill (-7) while Mike Miller (-6), Stewart Hagestad (-6), and Theo Humphrey (-5) also earned a ticket to Shinnecock Hills. Notables from this sectional to miss out include Wyndham Clark, Rhein Gibson, Oscar Fraustro, Roberto Diaz, Abraham Ancer, Andrew Svoboda, and Johnson Wagner.

The 2014 NCAA individual champion at Stanford is at Silverado on a sponsor exemption. After turning pro for the Travelers Championship in June, he went 0-for-2 on the PGA TOUR and 1-for-2 on the Web.com Tour. Thus far this week, he’s split just 15 (of 28) fairways, but has created 30 opportunities to break par. Wilson has done so 11 times, all for birdie, including five today. While a five-yarder from just off the green at the par-4 12th is notable, his highlight dropped in from 37-and-a-half feet at the par-4 third.

Wilson played this tournament on a sponsor exemption, and has no status on the PGA TOUR in 2014-15. If he’s able to secure future exemptions or open qualify into other events, he could use this finish as a way to try and eventually secure Special Temporary Membership. His final lap around Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course featured two birdies, two bogeys and an 18'9" chip-in eagle on the par-5 18th.

Wilson tied for 31st in the Frys.com Open to start the 2014-15 PGA TOUR season, and his trip to Pebble Beach represents his second event of the season. He has no status on the PGA TOUR, so he is completely reliant on sponsor exemptions, top 10s and open qualifiers for starts. He played each of the two Web.com Tour events to start that season, sharing 54th in Panama and missing the cut in Colombia last week.
