Fredrik Andersson Hed shot 16-under-par 272 at the BMW Italian Open in Turin, recording a two-stroke victory, his first on the European Tour.

The 38-year-old Swede has attended qualifying school on the European Tour 14 times, including last year when he graduated for the sixth time. Today’s breakthrough rewards him with fully-exempt status through 2012. England’s David Horsey finished alone in second place.

Fredrik Andersson Hed posted a 2-under-par 32-36=68 in his opening round of the British Open.

The Swede first played this major in 1995, but didn’t qualify again until 2002, and then not for the third time until last year. His patience paid off today in the form of four birdies against two bogeys. He’s the seventh to finish three strokes off the pace of the clubhouse co-leaders.
