Boros

Boros was the ninth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry due to three withdrawals. In his 2012 PGA TOUR debut at the True South Classic two weeks ago, he shared 49th place.

As we suspected, he’s remain in Chile for this week’s Web.com Tour event. Given his lowly spot in the overall pecking order on the PGA TOUR, his better bet at regaining status in the big leagues is through the secondary circuit.

Boros was the 10th alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry today when Brian Gay withdrew. Despite this berth, the big fella is scheduled to compete in the Chile Classic on the Web.com Tour, so don’t be shocked if he remains committed to that circuit. He gave it a full season in 2013 and hasn’t competed on the PGA TOUR since the 2012 Reno-Tahoe Open. The one-time TOUR champ will turn 50 on Sept. 4.

He’s made only one start on the PGA TOUR this season, missing the cut at the John Deere Classic three weeks ago. He’s 5-for-15 on the Web.com Tour this season and ranks 134th on its money list. The one-time PGA TOUR winner turns 50 years of age on Sept. 4.

The 50-year-old is committed to this week’s Shaw Charity Classic on the Champions Tour. Boros ranks 58th on the money list on the senior circuit.

After missing the cut in 2008 at Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico, Boros improved steadily with a T66 in 2009 and a T24 in 2010. He turned 50 on September 4, 2014 and now has his eyes mainly on the Champions Tour. He tied for 11th in the Allianz Championship.

Boros split nine (of 14) fairways and hit 13 greens in regulation in each round thus far. He’s overcome five bogeys with seven birdies and sits five strokes back of 36-hole clubhouse leader Alex Cejka. The 50-year-old hasn’t cashed in a PGA TOUR event since the 2012 Barracuda Championship, but this is just his third start on the circuit since. Anything he banks is gravy as he transitions to a career on the Champions Tour.

Boros is playing mostly on the Nationwide Tour this season, where he has a couple of Top 25s in seven starts. He has two starts on the PGA Tour this season, with his only made cut coming at the Puerto Rico Open, where he tied for 66th place.

Boros was a late addition on Wednesday to the field. He has been replaced in the Open by David Gossett.

Boros has been splitting time this season between the Nationwide and PGA Tours. He played in last week’s U.S. Bank Championship, where he finished in a tie for 65th place.
