INZAI, Japan -- Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen shot a 1-over 71 to fall further behind at the Suntory Open, while Australian Scott Laycock took a one-stroke lead with a 69.
Laycock offset three bogeys with four birdies and is at 6-under 134 for the tournament at the Sobu Country Club.
South Korean Y.E. Yang is a stroke back along with three others after an even-par 70.
Goosen, who won this year’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, could only manage a lone birdie against a pair of bogeys on the first and 11th holes. He is seven strokes back at 141.
‘Everything was awful,’ Goosen said. ‘My tee shots and irons were particularly bad today.’
