The Purdue women’s golf team continued its momentum heading into the 2006 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships by winning the West Regional on Saturday in Auburn, Wash.
In an extremely talented field, the Boilermakers looked dominant. Purdue was the only team to break 300 in each of its three rounds. It totaled 881 strokes, the fourth lowest in school history and six strokes ahead of second ranked and top-seeded UCLA.
The Boilermakers fired a final-round 298. They grabbed the lead in the second round on Friday after carding a 294, the lowest of the day. This was the first appearance in the West Regional for the Boilermakers, who advanced to their seventh-straight NCAA Championships.
‘It was a great golf course and I think that from tee to green it was very demanding and that helped us,’ said Big Ten Coach of the Year Devon Brouse. ‘Our goal coming out here was to play better than everybody else, and I take my hat off to our girls for doing that. They got the job done this week.’
Host school Washington, Stanford, Georgia, UNLV, Arizona and Arkansas will join UCLA and Purdue from the West Regional in he field of 24 in the NCAA Championships from May 23 to 26 in Columbus, Ohio.
Purdue, ranked No.8 in the Golfweek.com Poll, had three individuals in the top 10.
Big Ten Freshman of the Year Christel Boeljon led the way for the Boilermakers. She finished third after completing the three rounds at one-over par. On Saturday, Boeljon fired a one-over 73. She played the front nine at one-under. Boeljon’s total of 217 is tied for the eighth lowest in school history.
Freshman Maria Hernandez finished the tournament four over par and tied for fifth overall. After playing the back nine at even par, she totaled 74 on Saturday. Hernandez fired a one-under 71 on Thursday, the lowest round of the tournament for Purdue.
Big Ten Golfer of the Year Onnarin Sattayabanphot finished 10th after a total of 221. The senior carded a 75 on Saturday, despite a triple-bogey on No. 13.
Junior Myrte Eikenaar tied for 40th overall. She finished 15 over par. Sophomore Whitney Frykman tied for 48th after a total of 232.
The victory was Purdue’s sixth of the season, establishing a school record. The Boilermakers won four of the five tournaments in which they competed in the fall. Prior to the regionals, the Boilermakers captured the second Big Ten Championship in school history in Bloomington.
The 2006 NCAA West Regional Championships were held at the Washington National Golf Club and hosted by Washington University.
