PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Australia’s Rachel Teske returns to Locust Hill Country Club hoping to recreate the magic that led her to her eighth career LPGA title and second consecutive win of the (2003) year at the Wegmans Rochester LPGA Presented by Lincoln Mercury. Teske, who has yet to win this season, is currently 40th on the ADT Official Money List and looks to bring her game back to winning form at the $1.5 million event.
At last year’s tournament, Teske carded a final-round 68 and secured the win over runner-up Lorena Ochoa with a 15-foot eagle putt on the 17th hole. She finished at 11-under-par for the tournament. Ochoa, the 2003 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year, made a run at Teske on the last day, but was not able to come home with the win.
Teske had a successful end to the 2003 season, finishing seventh on the ADT Official Money list with $924,667. This season, the Australian has made the cut in all 10 tournaments entered, with her best finish coming at the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez, where she tied for seventh, but has yet to challenge for a tournament title.
In order to hoist the ninth tournament trophy of her career, Teske will again face Ochoa and a very strong field at the Wegmans Rochester LPGA Presented by Lincoln Mercury. With one victory already this season at the Franklin American Mortgage Championship benefiting Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Ochoa is hoping to find her second win here. Other 2004 champions who will be playing this week include Se Ri Pak, Grace Park, Jennifer Rosales, Sherri Steinhauer and Karen Stupples. Annika Sorenstam will be going for her fifth victory this season as well.
Past Wegmans Rochester LPGA winners Laura Davies (2001), Tammie Green (1993), Meg Mallon (2000), Dottie Pepper (1996) and Deb Richard (1987) are in the field. Two-time winner Rosie Jones (1991, 1998) will also be on hand.
Shi Hyun Ahn is looking to extend her lead in the competition for the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year honors. Aree Song will not be competing in this week’s tournament, giving Ahn a chance to pull even farther ahead. She currently holds a 62-point lead over Song.
Amateurs Liz Janangelo and Paula Creamer received sponsor’s exemptions and will be among the young stars at this week’s tournament. Janangelo and Creamer were a part of the victorious 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team, and Creamer finished tied for second, just a stroke behind Cristie Kerr at last week’s ShopRite LPGA Classic.
