The Englishman was becalmed for eight holes of his first round, writing down par on each of those openers, but when he finally added a circle around a number he couldn’t stop. He repeated the mark on the tenth, 11th and 12th, then also brandished one at the 17th, but not before he double circled the 16th for an eagle-3. He’s not had the best of summers, managing just the two top tens, but both of them hinted that he might do well this week. The first was in the British Masters at Hillside, the second the Irish Open at Lahinch – both, of course, links tracks. He heads to the Old Course for round two, two swings back of first round leader Justin Walters.
