It was a surprise to see Early, who had thrown five scoreless innings, brought out for the sixth at 88 pitches in 2 -0 game, but the Red Sox felt short-handed in the pen after Saturday’s extra-inning game. Early gave up a single to Matt McLain and then struck out Elly De La Cruz before being lifted. Greg Weissert came in and walked Sal Stewart and then gave up three-run homer to Eugenio Suárez, denying Early a chance at a win. Early ended up allowing five hits, walking two and striking out six. He’s not a bad option in mixed leagues with a home start against the Padres coming up next.

After hitting a game-tying homer in the ninth inning of Boston’s eventual loss Saturday, Abreu again did everything he could to aid the Red Sox offense today. Alas, his homer accounted for the team’s only scores. He might have plated more runs in the eighth if Jarren Duran hadn’t gotten picked off first with one out. Willson Contreras went on to reach and Abreu singled to the gap afterwards, but Caleb Durbin struck out to end the threat.

Gray would have had an easier time in a two-run first if he hadn’t dropped the ball while trying to make a tag at home plate on a soft comebacker. Better yet, he could have just thrown to the catcher in the first place. But that run was still earned, because dropping a ball while trying to tag someone isn’t an error. The unearned run came in the second after a Trevor Story error. Gray’s velocity was good today, but he was a little wilder than usual and the 35-pitch first ruled out any chance of him going deep into the game. He’ll take on the Padres next.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #11
Mayer came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of runs scored during Thursday’s season-opening win over Cincinnati. The 23-year-old top prospect sat in favor of veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa to open the contest, which might be a regular occurrence against left-handed starters this season. He’s talented enough to make an impact in deeper mixed leagues as a middle and corner infield option.
  • BOS 2nd Baseman #2
Rodgers returns to Boston on a new minor league pact after undergoing right shoulder surgery earlier this month. The 29-year-old infielder will spend at least a couple months rehabbing before he’s ready to return to game action. The odds of him contributing for the Red Sox later this season are extremely low.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #35
Crochet got into trouble in a still scoreless game in the sixth, when Matt McLain walked and Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart both singled with one out, but he rebounded to fan both Eugenio Suárez and Spencer Steer to end his afternoon. Dating back to last September, Crochet has won five straight starts, pitching scoreless ball in three of those. He’ll face the Astros next.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #44
Chapman averaged 96.9 mph with his six fastballs. That’s down 1.5 mph from last year, but it’s back up about 0.5 mph from where he was in his seven outings this spring. His 368th save moves him past Jeff Reardon and into a tie with Jonathan Papelbon for 11th place on the all-time list. He’s nine away from tying Joe Nathan and jumping into the top 10.
  • BOS Right Fielder #19
To no one’s surprise, Anthony was one of the big ABS winners to start the year. He turned a strikeout into a walk with two outs in the top of the ninth, opening the door for the Red Sox to increase their lead from one run to three. Before that, he had the two hardest-hit balls of the game with his 112- and 110-mph singles. The latter nearly took Sal Stewart’s arm off at first base.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #11
Mayer sat in favor of Isiah Kiner-Falefa against lefty Andrew Abbott, but he made a big impact with his pinch-hit double in the seventh. He then came around to score the first run of the game on a Ceddanne Rafaela single. He went on to single and score in the ninth to give the Red Sox some cushion. The Red Sox aren’t due to face another lefty for at least a week, so Mayer should be in the lineup for the next several games in a row.

With Rob Refsnyder no longer on the team, the Red Sox don’t have a clear platoon partner for Abreu. Isiah Kiner-Falefa may make some starts in the outfield against lefties, but he’s playing second base today with Marcelo Mayer sitting. This is great news for Abreu’s fantasy value, and he could be in for a real breakout season. The rest of the Red Sox’s Opening Day lineup is: Roman Anthony LF, Trevor Story SS, Jarren Duran DH, Willson Contreras 1B, Caleb Durbin 3B, Wilyer Abreu RF, Isiah Kiner-Falefa 2B, Carlos Narvaez C, and Ceddanne Rafaela CF.
