Carroll

Carroll, 29, spent 2021 in the Orioles and Marlins organizations -- the latter after he was released by Baltimore in August. He’s appeared in 18 MLB games with unsightly ERA of 13.74 over 19 innings. He provides depth in the minors for San Francisco in 2022.

Carroll struggled with a 5.57 ERA and 23/11 K/BB ratio over 21 relief innings this season in Triple-A. The 28-year-old came over from the Yankees in the Zach Britton trade in 2018, but he put up a brutal 13.74 ERA over 18 relief appearances in the majors between 2018 and 2020. And now Baltimore is ready to move forward.

The move clears him from the 40-man roster, but he’ll remain with the Orioles at their alternate site. Carroll has allowed 12 runs in two innings during his time in the majors this season.

This move opens a 30-man roster spot for John Means, who is making his regular season debut on Thursday night against the Yankees. Carroll had allowed six earned runs while recording only one out.

Carroll was optioned out of Orioles camp in mid-March despite posting pretty good numbers in the Grapefruit League. If he can get back to full health, he should be up in Baltimore not long after. The 26-year-old reliever was acquired from the Yankees last July as part of the Zack Britton trade.

Carroll has posted a 2.57 ERA and 9/1 K/BB ratio over seven innings this spring, but that wasn’t enough to land him an Opening Day bullpen spot. He’ll get a shot before long.

Recently acquired from the Yankees in the Zach Britton deal, Carroll has posted a 2.47 ERA and 57/18 K/BB ratio over 43 2/3 innings in Triple-A this season. The Orioles just traded Brad Brach to the Braves, so Carroll will take his spot in the bullpen and projects as a possible late-inning arm for the club.

Carroll was acquired from the Yankees last week as part of the Zach Britton trade. He should prove to be a good long-term asset for the Orioles’ bullpen and could even see some save chances down the stretch this year.

Carroll posted a 7.00 ERA over his first nine relief appearances at the big league level. He’ll be back when rosters expand.
