Royals signed INF Erich Weiss to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Omaha.
Weiss is 27 years old and has yet to appear in a major league game. He holds a career .273/.349/.387 batting line in nearly 2,500 plate appearances in the majors.

Pirates 2B prospect Erich Weiss produced seven RBI Sunday in a win for Double-A Altoona.
That’s one off the club record. He went 3-for-4 while finishing a single shy of the cycle. Weiss has been good but not spectacular this year, contributing a .279 average with six homers and 59 RBI in 113 games. The 24-year-old ranks third in the Eastern League with nine triples. This is his first full season at Double-A after splitting his 2015 campaign between Altoona and High-A Bradenton.

Erich Weiss went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI against the Yankees on Monday.
Weiss, a 2013 11th-round pick who went unselected in the Rule 5 draft last December, hit .276/.352/.408 for Double-A Altoona last year. The bat might be there to make him a utilityman in the majors, but he’d have to prove he can play shortstop and he hasn’t had any chance to do that thus far.
