He’ll miss much of 2006, too. Campillo has had discomfort in his elbow for much of the season, but he said he thought he was 100 percent prior to Tuesday’s setback.

Campillo is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.

Campillo underwent Tommy John surgery in August, so there was no reason to keep him on the 40-man roster. He’ll probably resume pitching in the minors around midseason.

Campillo shouldn’t be in line behind both Ryan Franklin and Aaron Sele for the fifth spot in Seattle’s rotation. Middle relief might be the best place for him.

Campillo was only making his second appearance, so it’s probably too early for judgments. Still, we’d be surprised if he breaks camp with the Mariners. He’s not going to win a rotation spot, and there isn’t likely to be room for him in the pen.

Campillo, who was signed out of the Mexican League last month, was sent down despite allowing one run in five innings tonight in a win over the Angels. He’ll probably get a look as a middle reliever at some point.

Campillo must have had a clause in his minor league contract requiring that he be added to the 40-man roster as soon as a spot could be freed up. The 26-year-old right-hander is competing for a spot in Seattle’s rotation.

Joel Pineiro will replace him on the roster and start Tuesday. Campillo pitched a scoreless inning in his lone appearance while on Seattle’s roster.
