Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports that the Blue Jays have claimed right-handed pitcher Matt West off waivers from the Rangers. The Jays designated Cory Burns to make room on the 40-man roster for West.

West, 26, made his major league debut and had a cup of coffee with the Rangers in July last season, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three in four innings. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2012. Taken in the second round of the 2007 draft by the Rangers, West was brought up as a third baseman but became a full-time pitcher in 2011.

Burns, 27, has been with a handful of teams already in his young career. He was drafted in the eighth round of the 2009 draft by the Indians, was traded to the Padres in December 2011, then traded to the Rangers in November 2012. In June last season, the Rays selected him off waivers from the Rangers, and the Blue Jays selected him off waivers from the Rays in September.
