Blue Jays sign No. 17 pick D.J. Davis for $1.75 million

mlb draft

Toronto has signed its first-round pick, high school center fielder D.J. Davis, for a $1.75 million bonus that’s $250,000 below the recommend value for the 17th overall pick.

Baseball America‘s pre-draft scouting report suggested that Davis could be the fastest player in professional baseball once he signed, although for now at least Reds prospect Billy Hamilton and his 160-steal pace hold that title pretty securely.

Davis ranked as the 20th-best player in the draft class according to Baseball America, but ESPN.com rated him 66th while questioning whether he’ll hit enough to be a star rather than merely a speedster with great range defensively.
