Cardinals fear Kyle McClellan’s elbow injury may be serious

Kyle McClellan left last night’s game with elbow soreness and admitted afterward that he’s been pitching with pain for several weeks now.

McClellan, who underwent Tommy John surgery as a minor leaguer in 2006, told Rick Eymer of MLB.com: “The pain is somewhat similar to when I did it in the minors, but that was on one violent pitch. I’m hoping this isn’t like that.”

Eymer reports that McClellan will be examined by team doctors in St. Louis. He’s allowed 11 runs in 19 innings this season, but threw 142 innings with a 4.19 ERA last year while splitting time between the bullpen and rotation to help fill in when Adam Wainwright underwent Tommy John surgery of his own.
