No. 2 overall pick Kris Bryant and the Cubs have agreed to a deal ahead of Friday’s deadline for draft picks to sign.
And despite all the headlines about Bryant holding out for more money than the Cubs were comfortable paying Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that the San Diego third baseman will get a bonus worth $6,708,400. In other words he signed for the exact slot recommended bonus amount for the No. 2 pick, which is slightly more than the below-slot $6.35 million bonus Mark Appel got from the Astros at No. 1.
As an experienced college hitter who hit more homers than most NCAA teams this season Bryant should move pretty quickly through the Cubs’ farm system, perhaps even putting himself in position for a call-up at some point next season if things go well.
