Update: Mazara homered to center field in his third at-bat. Have yourself a day, kid.

Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo landed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday due to a strained right calf. That opened the door for prospect Nomar Mazara. The Rangers called him up from Triple-A Round Rock and put him in Sunday’s starting lineup against the Angels.

Facing Angels starter Jered Weaver in the first inning with one out, Mazara hooked an outside off-speed pitch into right-center for a single. Mazara would single again in the third inning. Not a bad way to begin a big league career.

Mazara, 20, was rated the Rangers’ third-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Last year, between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock, Mazara hit a composite .296/.366/.443 with 14 home runs, 69 RBI, and 68 runs scored in 558 plate appearances.
