UPDATE: The move is now official. The Dodgers have activated right-hander Carlos Frias from the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding roster move.
8:43 p.m. ET: Mat Latos was already bumped to the Dodgers’ bullpen earlier this month and now Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports hears that he has been designated for assignment.
Latos was acquired from the Marlins in a three-team deal before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The 27-year-old tossed six innings of one-run ball in his first start with the Dodgers on August 2, but he failed to complete five innings in any of his next four starts. He was moved to the bullpen from there and has made just one appearance since September 3. Latos ended up posting a 6.66 ERA and 18/6 K/BB ratio over 24 1/3 innings during his brief time with the club.
The Dodgers won’t need a fifth starter during the postseason, so they apparently decided to turn the page and open up a spot on the 40-man roster. Latos is due to become a free agent this offseason.
