It wasn’t too long ago that the Royals were running away with the best record in the American League. However, the surging Blue Jays are threatening to crash the party.
Making his second start back from a torn ACL, Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a 6-1 win over the Red Sox last night. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Originally thought to be lost for the season, he could be a huge weapon in the postseason.
Meanwhile, the Royals lost 5-4 to the Tigers in 12 innings after an implosion from struggling closer Greg Holland. After the Royals took the lead in the top of the 12th, Holland allowed a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Collins bring in the tying run before Dixon Machado hit a walk-off single. He’s becoming a big problem for the Royals.
The Blue Jays -- who are a season-high 4 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East -- are now 85-62 on the year. They are just one game behind the Royals (86-61) for the best record in the American League.
