Not a bad gamble. Wing, a 2001 second-round pick, missed the entire season with a shoulder injury, but he never did need surgery. If he shows up next year at 100 percent, he should still be viewed as a potential third or fourth starter.

Wing, reclaimed on waivers from the Rangers in June, went 0-4 with a 8.69 ERA in limited time at Winston-Salem this season. Shoulder troubles have turned him into a longshot.

Nearly nine months after being claimed by Texas, Wing, who missed all of 2004 with shoulder trouble, is returning to his original organization. The 23-year-old southpaw was 2-5 with a 6.93 ERA, 57 H and 33/36 K/BB in 50 2/3 IP for Single-A Bakersfield, but he still may have some potential.

Wing was viewed as a potential middle-of-the-rotation starter before missing 2004 due to shoulder surgery. He struggled to return in 2005 and 2006, seeing only limited action each year, but he’s come back strong this season, amassing a 1.59 ERA and a 31/10 K/BB ratio in 34 innings for Birmingham. The 25-year-old left-hander might be a candidate to see time in the White Sox bullpen later this season.

Wing walked four in his third start since returning from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss 2004. He could be moved up to Double-A soon.

Wing was once a very good starting pitching prospect in the White Sox system before having shoulder problems. He reemerged as an effective reliever with Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate last season, amassing a 2.33 ERA in 54 innings, but the A’s never did give him a shot.
