Vasquez

Vasquez hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2009 season, when he posted a rough 5.84 ERA in 44 2/3 innings with the Pirates. The righty turns 31 next June.

Vasquez was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday at Toledo, with no reason given. He struggled in his big league debut against Minnesota earlier this season, but has turned in back-to-back strong outings at Triple-A.

A reliever will be sent down to make room for him. Vasquez will likely return to Triple-A prior to Wednesday’s game.

Vasquez will start tonight against the White Sox and then return to Triple-A.

Vasquez did a nice job in his spot start Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two runs in five-plus innings. Unfortunately, the bullpen cost him his first major league victory.

Vasquez, not Chad Durbin, will get the start in place of Jair Jurrjens against the A’s on Friday. It’s possible he’ll remain in the rotation after that, though it’s not a given at all. AL-only leaguers should keep an eye on him.

If Rogers is unable to pitch, manager Jim Leyland indicated that Virgil Vasquez could start Wednesday instead. Vasquez is 0-1 with a 9.26 ERA in three spot starts. “It’s improved to the point that I think I can go out there and compete. I’m happy with that,” Rogers said.

Vasquez didn’t make much of a case for staying in the rotation in place of Andrew Miller. He could head to the bullpen if Kenny Rogers returns as hoped next week.

Vasquez, Friday’s starter, was 5-2 with a 4.18 ERA and a 53/10 K/BB ratio in 14 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this year. He doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table fantasy-wise and we’d probably avoid him, even in NL-only leagues.

Charlie Morton, who was scheduled to pitch Friday, will now start Sunday in Ian Snell’s vacated spot, according to the report. Vasquez is 5-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 14 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this year.
