Lowther

Lowther made just one relief appearance last year for the Orioles before being removed from Baltimore’s 40-man roster, and hasn’t pitched this season due to a left shoulder injury. The 27-year-old lefty would be an organizational depth addition somewhere else.

Lowther was designated for assignment by the O’s last week and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 26-year-old southpaw has surrendered 29 runs -- 27 earned -- in 35 career major league innings.

Lowther allowed six runs over 5 1/3 innings in his only appearance with Baltimore this year. The southpaw was also struggling in Norfolk with a 10.03 ERA over 10 appearances with the Triple-A club. He’ll be organizational depth no matter what happens next.

Lowther threw 100 pitches as the bulk reliever for the O’s on Tuesday night against the Mariners, so he wasn’t going to be available for a little while. Denyi Reyes is filling the roster vacancy on Wednesday.

Bryan Baker served as the opener and coughed up three runs in 1 1/3 innings. He then turned things over to Lowther, who wound up throwing 100 pitches in relief. Lowther, of course, is used to starting, though he hadn’t even reached 90 pitches yet in the minors this year. He’s probably headed back to Triple-A Norfolk.

Lowther will provide the Orioles with some much-needed long relief depth for Tuesday’s bullpen game against the Mariners. The 26-year-old southpaw has yet to make an appearance this season for the Orioles after making 10 appearances (six starts) last year.

The Orioles have 39 players left in camp this spring. Lowther made 10 appearances (six starts) last year at the major-league level. The 25-year-old southpaw will head to the minors as organizational pitching depth.

Lowther walked four and struck out just one. He definitely needed a better showing that this to help his chances of securing a rotation spot, but he should make the Orioles anyway and he’ll get to continue to audition for the duration of the month of April.

Lowther did his part tonight, but the Orioles couldn’t muster any offense in a 6-0 loss. Lowther finishes the year 1-3 with a 6.67 ERA in six starts and four relief appearances. He’ll have to battle for a rotation spot next spring.

Lowther authored the strongest start of his rookie campaign, generating 14 swinging strikes and finishing with a solid 32 percent CSW (called strikes plus whiffs). He scattered three hits and only issued a pair of walks. The 25-year-old lefty owns a disastrous 7.66 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 26/13 K/BB ratio across 24 2/3 innings (nine appearances, five starts) this season. He’s not a recommended fantasy option on Wednesday night against the Red Sox in his final outing of the season.
