As of last update, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said Kevin Garnett hadn’t told him whether or not he’s retiring.
All evidence indicates Garnett will return – except one biggie. Garnett hasn’t yet publicly stated his intention.
Maybe the Nets privately know Garnett’s plan. But if not, they must ready contingencies, and this move fits the mold:

Jordan is big and has some impressive athletic traits, but that alone isn’t enough to play at an NBA level.
The 7-foot, 250-pound center was drafted in the second round of the 2010 draft out of Tulsa. He played 21 games for the 2011-12 Knicks, spending the rest of his pro career in the D-League and overseas.
The Nets already have 15 players, including Jorge Gutierrez (whose unguaranteed salary becomes $25,000 guaranteed before training camp begins) and Cory Jefferson (whose salary is $75,000 guaranteed). There’s a chance Jordan could overtake either for a roster spot, but that’s unlikely.
If Garnett returns, Jordan probably gets cut before the regular season begins. But if Garnett bucks convention and retires, Jordan could be in line for a roster spot.
