Report: Dell Demps stating regret over hiring Alvin Gentry

Pelicans general manager Dell Demps wasn’t always on the same page with Monty Williams.

A coach later, and Demps reportedly has the same problem.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Dell Demps hired Alvin Gentry as his coach. And sources tell me that he spent way too much of this year second-guessing his own hire as a head coach – often in very public ways within earshot of players, staff and even opponents.

If Demps is that down on Gentry, how can they develop a productive relationship? The question is probably irrelevant.

Demps has been on the hot seat, and it seems likely Gentry was his last hire. It’s increasingly difficult to see the Pelicans – who were trying to win now, but are 26-45 – keeping Demps.

Injuries have derailed New Orleans’ season, but they’re not the only problem. The offensive-minded Gentry has struggled to fix the Pelicans’ biggest issues, which were on the defensive end. And with Demps supplying too slow and plodding of a roster to suit Gentry, the coach’s offense hasn’t taken off, either.

There’s plenty of blame to spread around, and it seems Demps is happy to direct a share at Gentry.

That’s both their problems now.

If Demps were on his last legs as general manager, undermining the coach won’t help. And if Demps goes, his replacement will likely want his own coach, and that might not be Gentry.

It sounds as if Demps is begging for ownership to execute a reset he knows is coming anyway.
