The NBA likes to open the season with some of the best matchups possible for obvious reasons, and we have our first rumblings of what we might be treated to as a start to the 2014-15 season.

LeBron James being involved shouldn’t come as any surprise, but if the rumored matchup being penciled in ends up becoming finalized, it would mean a slight change in the way things have been done in the recent past.

From Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe:

Rumor has it that the NBA’s season-opening game on TNT will be San Antonio at Cleveland, the first home game for LeBron James in his return to Cleveland and the first game for the defending NBA champion Spurs. The NBA schedule is expected to be released next month.

LeBron opening the season at home with the Cavaliers would be an emotionally-charged way to tip things off, but it’s not exactly protocol for how the league has treated its defending champions.

In each of the last two years, the Miami Heat opened the season at home, where they received their championship rings and raised a banner to the rafters. It wouldn’t seem fair to the Spurs not to get the same treatment, although it’s certainly possible things could change before the final version of the schedule is officially released.
