Van Exel

Van Exel is making his return to Atlanta, where he served as a player development instructor from 2010-12. The former NBA point guard spent his last two seasons with the Mavericks staff, serving as a scout.

His status is unknown for tonight’s game against Milwaukee.

Van Exel was excused from practice Monday and today, and coach Maurice Cheeks said he was unsure when Van Exel would rejoin the team. If Van Exel does not play, Cheeks said he will start Derek Anderson. If you can, remove Van Exel from your lineup.

Van Exel said that he will fly to Dallas to meet with Mavericks team physicians on Monday to get a second opinion on the knee. Van Exel’s own estimate if he has surgery is that he would miss 3-4 weeks.

Van Exel was hurt during practice on Monday. Speedy Claxton will start in his place tonight.

''I’ve had this surgery before,’' said Van Exel. ''I know what to expect. Once I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go.’' If he can play Wednesday, it will be just 16 days after arthroscopic surgery.
