NFL Week 17 Preview: Texans vs. Chargers
The Texans are winners of seven straight, as they head on the road to take on the Chargers in a contest that oozes playoff implications. Chris Simms likes L.A. to win a close won while Mike Florio has the exact opposite.

The Chargers have lost yet another offensive lineman.

Left tackle Jamaree Salyer exited Sunday’s game on the Chargers’ fifth play from scrimmage. He went to the training room and is questionable to return with a hamstring injury.

Salyer was injured on Omarion Hampton’s 2-yard run with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter.

Austin Deculus replaced Salyer at left tackle.

The Chargers have played most of the season with starting tackles Joe Alt, who had a season-ending high-ankle sprain in Week 4, and Rashawn Slater, who tore the patellar tendon in his left knee in training camp.

The Chargers took their first lead on Ladd McConkey’s 25-yard touchdown reception from Justin Herbert with 9:45 remaining in the second quarter. The Chargers lead 14-10.

Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston grew up 135 miles from AT&T Stadium in Temple, Texas. He played his college football down I-30 in Fort Worth at TCU.

He already has had a happy homecoming, scoring a touchdown on the Chargers’ first drive.

Johnston made a spectacular one-handed catch despite being closely guarded by Cowboys rookie cornerback Shavon Revel. His 23-yard touchdown was his eighth score of the season and allowed the Chargers tie the Cowboys 7-7 with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter.

The Chargers went 65 yards in six plays, with Justin Herbert going 4-for-4 for 62 yards and the touchdown.

The Cowboys struck first on Ryan Flournoy’s 5-yard touchdown catch.

The Cowboys have nothing to play for today, but that apparently isn’t going to keep them from playing hard and competing.

Dallas has taken an early 7-0 lead on the Chargers.

The Cowboys took the opening kickoff and marched 79 yards in 10 plays. Ryan Flournoy, who is having a breakout season, caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescott with only 4:40 gone in the game.

Prescott went 6-of-7 for 69 yards on the drive, including a fourth-down pass to George Pickens. He saw man coverage on Pickens and hit him for a 28-yard gain to the Los Angeles 11 on fourth-and-2.

Center Cooper Beebe was poked in the eye on the fourth down play but appears ready to return on the next series.

The Bills will try to wrap up a playoff berth without the help of wide receiver Keon Coleman on Sunday.

Coleman is inactive for Buffalo’s game in Cleveland. Coleman was not on the injury report at all this week, but will miss his third game of the season. Coleman was scratched for disciplinary reasons earlier this year, but Cameron Wolfe of NFL Media reports Sunday’s deactivation is solely a coach’s decision. Coleman was a 2024 second-round pick and he has 36 catches for 355 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Mecole Hardman, who was activated from injured reserve this week, is active.

The Bills need a win and a loss by either the Texans or Colts in order to book a playoff berth. A win will also help their chances of ending the season as the AFC East champs for the sixth straight season.

Chargers safety Tony Jefferson, who caught the game winning interception in Week 14 against the Eagles, has caught a pair of fines for infractions from Week 15 in Kansas City.

The league has penalized Jefferson $7,111 for the hit on a defenseless receiver that prompted his ejection from the game. He was fined another $7,111 for a double-barreled holiday greeting to the folks at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jefferson later apologized for the middle fingers, but not for the hit.

“I was caught up in the moment,” Jefferson said. “I’m classier than that.”

Jefferson and the Chargers return to action on Sunday, against the Cowboys in Dallas. Owner Jerry Jones has proven he’s not classier than that.

Oh wait, his Week 5 middle finger was accidental.

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs will return to the field on Sunday against the Chargers.

Diggs, who has been on injured reserve since Week Seven, has been activated.

It’s still not clear exactly what has been going on with Diggs, who was on injured reserve with a knee injury but then was also dealing with a concussion from what was called an “incident at home.” But he’s now ready to play.

Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland, however, will not play again this season. He’s going on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (concussion) appears on track to return for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

He had full participation in Friday’s practice after limited work on Thursday but still must gain clearance from an independent neurologist.

Thus, the Cowboys list Williams as questionable.

Cornerback Trevon Diggs (knee) also is questionable after another limited practice. The Cowboys have to decide whether to activate Diggs from injured reserve before his 21-day window runs out Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.

“Mr. Diggs is having a very good week,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said Friday, via Tommy Yarrish of the team website. “We’ll see how he does today, but I’ll say this: When you look at Trevon this week, what I’ve loved the most about him is he’s having fun playing football. He’s smiling, running around, but to his credit, he’s having a really good week. So we’ll see how today goes.”

Cornerback DaRon Bland (foot) will land on season-ending injured reserve this week, opening a roster spot.

Left tackle Tyler Guyton (ankle) will miss another game this week as the Cowboys have ruled him out.

Cornerback Josh Butler (knee), cornerback Caelen Carson (shoulder/hamstring), fullback Hunter Luepke (concussion), running back Phil Mafah (shoulder) and defensive end Payton Turner (ribs) are questionable.

Butler, Turner and Mafah, like Diggs, are in their 21-day-return-to-practice windows.

The Chargers handed in their final injury report for Week 16 on Friday afternoon.

It shows that wide receiver Quentin Johnston has been listed as questionable after a week of limited practice sessions. Johnston is trying to return after missing last Sunday’s win over the Chiefs with a groin injury.

Edge rusher Bud Dupree (back) is also listed as questionable. Dupree did not practice on Thursday, but was a limited participant on Friday.

Wide receiver Derius Davis (ankle) and safety RJ Mickens (shoulder) have been ruled out. Defensive back Elijah Molden (hamstring), right tackle Trey Pipkins (ankle), and defensive lineman Teair Tart (shin) are all listed as questionable.

Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams returned to a limited practice on Thursday.

Williams left Sunday’s loss to the Vikings with a concussion, playing 31 of 54 snaps. He missed Wednesday’s practice but is moving in the right direction toward playing in Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

Fullback Hunter Luepke (concussion) also returned to limited work.

The Cowboys added safety Alijah Clark (personal) to the report as a non-participant.

Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (illness) missed practice for a second consecutive day.

Cornerback DaRon Bland (foot) and left tackle Tyler Guyton (ankle) also sat out the on-field work again.

Cornerback Trevon Diggs (knee) remained a limited participant as he approaches the end of his 21-day practice window.

Cornerback Josh Butler (knee), cornerback Caelen Carson (shoulder/hamstring), running back Phil Mafah (shoulder), cornerback Shavon Revel (knee), defensive end Payton Turner (ribs), running back Javonte Williams (neck) and safety Donovan Wilson (knee/hip) also were limited.

Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams left Sunday’s loss to the Vikings with a concussion. He played 31 of 54 snaps before his head injury.

He missed Wednesday’s practice as he remains in concussion protocol.

Cornerback DaRon Bland (foot), left tackle Tyler Guyton (ankle) and fullback Tyler Luepke (concussion) also sat out the on-field work.
