49ers spending big cash on Santa Clara stadium plan

The vote for the a possible 49ers stadium in Santa Clara is only two weeks away, and the team is showing how important it is with their spending.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the 49ers will fork over $3-4 million on a political campaign to get the votes they need.

Team spokeswoman Lisa Lang says the spending, “underscores how committed the Niners are to making this work.”

The team is sparing no expense for expertise. Their political team, which includes five full staff members, is led by famous Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who ran John McCain’s 2008 presidential bid and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2006 gubernatorial bid. (The 49ers hope they get better results than McCain.)

The opponents to the 49ers measure can’t come close to matching that sort of firepower. So if the 49ers can’t get the plan approved, it will mean Santa Clara really doesn’t want to help pay for their stadium.
