The Arena Football League decided earlier this year not to play games in 2009. Within the next couple of weeks, the 22-year-old indoor football league might decide to scrap 2010, too. According to John Lombardo of SportsBusiness Journal, AFL owners will meet this week in Chicago to discuss a restructuring plan. Previously, the owners set a March 1 deadline for devising a plan that would permit the league to return to action after a one-year hiatus. Among other things, the league needs a new labor deal with its union. The AFL could return in 2010 with fewer than the current slate of 16 teams. Several AFL franchises are owned in whole or in part by owners of NFL teams, including Jerry Jones of the Cowboys, Pat Bowlen of the Broncos, and Arthur Blank of the Falcons.
